Well the answer's pretty obvious here, although I really didn't think the night levels were as terrible as some seem to say.GabuEx
I agree. Perhaps it's because I long so much for decent 3D platformers that I actually didn't mind the werehog levels so much (finally got the game for Christmas). I think if Banjo: Nuts and Bolts had been an actual platforming game instead of a driving game, I might have not been so forgiving of the werehog stages.

Well I think that is one of the problems: from what I've seen, people seem to kind of have a narrow view of what Sonic "should be". Me, I personally just take games for what they are and the enjoyment you can derive from them.
I can certainly see why someone would be dreadfully repulsed by the werehog stages if they went into Sonic Unleashed going, "Okay now here's SONIC and he GOES FAST so this game is all about GOING FAST right?"
Sonic Team has proven on multiple occasions that they fail to execute the fun factor on any gameplay element in Sonic except going fast.
YMMVÂ

You know, your timing on everything is awfully convenient, considering I JUST rewrote my Sonic Spinball review for the Genesis (see other topic) and I JUST wrote one of my rants on the issue of people claiming Sonic should be just about speed.Me, I personally just take games for what they are and the enjoyment you can derive from them.

That's EXACTLY what I do.
Man, I've been trying to put that thought into words for months now.
You see my best friend plays my sonic unleashed game and he saids "the werehog is awsome. The gameplay cool. Sonic levels suck. Yeah" I need your help with your choicegamemanyeahThats a big-fat joke:roll:

*Faints*i love the day time levelmarioboy333
I will say if Unleashed got one thing right is that the daytime levels are some of the best 3D Sonic levels in recent memory. They are how Sonic should play in 3D. The controls are tight. When I nudge the left analog stick slightly Sonic moves slightly to the left instead of careening off the side. Also Sega finally lashed that epileptic camera down (though I hated not being able to move it around in the werehog stages).
Everytime I started to tire of the werehog, I'd just go back and play the day stages again, trying to find the hidden extras.

The one thing I didn't like was the whole B + direction thing for quickly zipping to the side. I found that part kinda flaky; sometimes it seemed not to work at all when I wanted it to.

gamecube controller ftw!Â
Indeed.
It's the only way to play a Sonic game.
However, SatBK plans to utilize motion controls, so we'll see how that works out.
What I didn't like was the daytime levels lasted 4 minutes and there was only one proper daytime level to the werehogs 3 levels which last about 8 minutes each. I also was annoyed you could not just run straight to the end.
Maybe if it was the opposite way round I might have liked the game a bit more because Sonic games to me are all about playing as Sonic not a werehog or anybody else.
You know what's funny?
Twilight Princess.
It utilized a new gameplay style, yet I never hear any complaints about how, "Oh, it's a bad game because Link is a wolf and that's just filler crap. We want to play as Link, not this joe schmoe."
But what happens when Sonic turns into a wolf?
I don't know, maybe the ratio wasn't so terribly off, but I hardly ever hear about the ratio; just the Werehog itself.

I can't imagine why a Gamecube controller would make a difference, as the B + direction controls made no use of motion controls whatsoever. If there is a difference, that's just sad. :P
The biggest mistake Sega had was having waaaay too many werehog levels. At the least it should've been 50/50.
Now compared to other filler in past games, at least I was playing as Sonic and as Gabby pointed out, smashing through hordes of baddies can be barrels of fun. God of War proved that. Particularly fun to stun one, pick him up and whip him around like a ragdoll. Also the platforming was decent and at least it was linear and I wasn't hunting around for 3 Emerald pieces (see Knuckles in SA1 and 2). As I said before, if there were more decent games on the market that did 3D platforming like that, I wouldn't have been so forgiving of the werehog. Blame my forgiveness of the werehog on my disappointment in Banjo's newest game that took everything I loved about the first two and pissed in my face.
Exactly. I actually liked the werehog levels at first, but when there started to be 4 stages in a row and they ended up veering more toward platforming, I was annoyed. Had there been more day stages and less night, and had those later night levels gear more toward combat, the game would have been excellent. IMO, Sonic Unleashed shows potential, but doesn't completely fulfill it. Those day stages showed no one gives a crap about score in a speed oriented stage. And in a combat oriented, it's about smashing through. I feel sorry SU didn't fully deliver, but I think we can agree it Sonic's bet 3D game since 2003.The biggest mistake Sega had was having waaaay too many werehog levels. Oddly enough, one of my favorite parts of Sonic Unleashed was actually the mini-puzzles in the Gaia Gates where you opened the door after getting enough Sun Medals and Moon Medals. I thought they should have made the rest of the gameplay like that. :P

Â
I totally skipped past all that.Â
I'll tell you what I do like: Mirror's Edge.
1. The point of the game is to run fast while platforming in first person
2. Gun play is downplayed because it slows you down. You can skip it.
3. Time trials and speed runs with online leaderboards and downloadable ghost data
Mirror's Edge satisfies my need for fast, competitive platforming in ways Sonic can't even touch right now.
sorry, a bit OT.Â
I've also heard people saying that the Sonic day stages are too easy and I don't know where that's coming from as I died plenty of times in stages as early as Chu-Nan and then you have Eggmanland which is nothing but death traps. Then again you're not playing Sonic unless there's high speed death traps. That goes back to the old games.kbaily
I don't think I ever died once in the day stages except for Eggmanland. The other stages really just felt more like time trials than actual stages; I'd have had to try to fail them in order to die. And the times I did die were just totally cheap shots, in my opinion. On the old Genesis games I could actually see what was coming far enough in advance that I could conceivably react to them as opposed to just having to go through the stage repeatedly, slowly memorizing all the dumb ways you can die.

I haven't really done those parts either. Maybe I should.
