I think most of us have encountered the imfamous barrel in the Carinval Zone in Sonic 3, has anyone ever made past that puzzle, I have just though it took me like 20 minutes to figure out how to get past it, what about you guys, have you gotten through it?

Yes I did when I was 12(I'm 20 now). It didn't take me that long to figure out. When I landed on it and the little gate behind me closed, I figured you either had to go up or down. When jumping as high as I could and landing on it alone didn't work, I jumped again but this time when the barrell went down I held the down arrow and vice versa.

Ah, good times good times. Let's see, I started playing Sonic 3 when I was 5. I figured it out about 3 years ago. I'm 16 now... that's what, 8 years for me to figure it out? lol.

Here's how it came about. I was playing S3&K on my PC, but only as Knuckles since I could never beat that $%^&*( spinning drum. I finally decided I'd try once more. Well, after dying 3 times after wasting 30 minutes (10 per life) I got frustrated and slammed my fist on the arrow keys in frustration, and lo and behold Sonic moved up! I did it again, and he moved down! I then tried up, down, up, down, and OMG WOW IT WORKZ!

I can't believe it was that easy...

I remember haing the same conversation at some other Sonic board too. What was funny is the fact that I didn't have any problem with that barrel at all, but had problem with a cannon in an earlier part in that stage. I couldn't get it to fire in the right angle.

I rented that game when I was a wee little 'un, and my sister and I played it literally all day for about three days (we were sick, and renting a video game was a "aw, you're sick" treat). We got up to that point and could not figure it out. We spent hours making Sonic bounce up as high as he could, only to hit the ceiling without finding and exit. Years later when I actually bought the game, I got through it only by saving a water shield until I got to the cylinder and holding the turbo button on my controller to make Sonic bounce the cylinder down. I finally had a brainstorm sometime later and decided to actually try controlling the cylinder with the d-pad. It wouldn't have been so hard if Sega had actually given us a clue!

I never had any problem with the barrel. I got the game on Mega Collection 3 years ago (give or take a couple of months) and I tried jumping up and down and it did it a fair bit, but it still wouldn't go high enough. So I pressed up and down and it worked straight away. I knew you could only go up and down, and since jumping didn't work, what better buttons to press than UP or DOWN! XD. But I guess most people don't think like that whilst trying to get through a level full of hazards and a time limit.

I probably would have gotten stuck on it if I'd have been able to get hold of the elusive Sonic 3 on MegaDrive. I could never find that game. yet there were tons of Sonic 1's, 2's and SnK's everywhere!

And lol, there's always people who will try and turn jokes into actual facts, like Chinese whispers. Soon there'll be a thread stating that someone heard MJ made the barrels, and they'll liken CarnivalNight Zone to Neverland too XD, so jokes like that should really be avoided :P

It's a simple joke, nothing much is made of it. If you don't like it, then don't comment on it. :)

I hope it won't appear in 3D Sonic games, because there are no "look up" or "duck" buttons.

There's a difference between gimmick and... well, to properly describe it I'd have to use explatives that violate the GameSpot terms of service. However, one of the explatives does involve the word two before the word "GameSpot."

I got lucky the first time I got passed it, cause the game glitched. I fell through the barrel as I was moving down after a jump. The second time I tried to beat Sonic 3 was when I got stuck on that part.

Tails would consistently glitch and fall through, but Sonic would always remain stuck on that barrel, forever DOOMED!

The soundtrack of Sonic 3 does bear resemblance to Michael Jackson's songs though.

I saw a video of it on YouTube.

I think they said Icecap and "Smooth Criminal" had a noticable resemblance. Or something like that. I could be wrong.
Lemme see if I can find it... Aha!

I've seen that before. However, as a 100% certified bando, I am severaly annoyed at their wrongness:

G minor is NOT the relative minor to Eb Major. G minor is the relative minor scale to Bb Major. The relative minor of Eb Major is C minor. Also the progression from C to G is a very common progression. C to G is a fifth, and most progressions occur in either fifths or fourths.

Bando rant over.

So if I were to say, oh, that B# is the same as C and E# is the game as F but F# is not the same as G, you'd believe that?

You don't really need any speed. Just keep going up and down while on that barrel. When it hits almost maximum distance from original position, Sonic/Tails/Knuckles becomes a blue/yellow/red pancake as soon as it hits the ceiling.

That's weird, I've tried to do that, but I guess I didn't do it well enough to make pancakes of them. :P

Ok, correction. You CAN'T make pancakes out of them in that particular barrel. You'll need to try other barrels for that. The BOD (Barrel Of Doom) just doesn't have that high apex (in other words the ceiling is too high). I tried recording a video but since I can't make them pancakes... -=Edit=- Anyone who wants to give it a try, I have a save state here. You'll need to have Gens, and the ROM of Sonic 3 And Knuckles (not Sonic 3). Load the state and voila!
