Like most All-Star games in most sports, it is a popularity contest, not who is really the best. The big names always go to these events, even if sometimes they are having a subpar season.

Even indepedent of the fact that he isn't what he used to be and there would be better choices for starters based on skill, how is this jerk so popular?

Well simply because this "jerk" as you call him is one of the best player of the past 15 years if not the whole NBA history : One MVP, four scoring titles, 28 ppg (3rd all-time), 6 apg, 2.3 spg over his career, and he plays injured a lot of times. It's hard to argue against his popularity over the last decade or so, even with a supbar season.

This

I'm a big Pistons fan and was suprised when I heard this.

In fact I don't even think he's the best guard on the Pistons.

The voting is not set up for the 5 individual postions , they just say pick the 2 best guards , 2 best forwards , and best center. That's one of the reasons why the West's lineup has a gigantic lineup.

Well real point guards like Andre Miller dont get enough recognition imo.

This isnt an all time honor tho, there are better Guards this year, who are also better team players, and more likeable people. I dont argue with his history of skill, but as this thread suggests, there were better choices this year imo

The Starters are a popularity contest. I think Iverson is the only one who doesnt deserve to start.

I just hope Granger, Joe Johnson and Shaq make the all star game (ive also been voting Harris in).

Yeah, its just like how Favre made the Pro Bowl. There's usually a few of those every year. I'm surprised he's starting though, that's pretty big.

A.I. acts all Gangsta, shows up late for practice, parks in Handi-cap spots and doesn't play any defense.

Apparently that's all it takes to be an All Star in the NBA.

I'm a HUGE Iverson fan. I'm the kinda fan who place Iverson top 5 all-time. That's how much I love and respect him. But I totally agree with you on that point : "there were better choices this year imo" because guards like Granger, Nelson and Harris are having a superb season, moreso than AI.

I find the crying hilarious. How long is it going to take people to figure out that no All-Star game showcases the best of the best for that given season? Most people love AI and they want to see him play. It also doesn't mean that all the people who voted him in are uneducated and don't know a thing about basketball. Sure, other players have had better seasons but who cares? It is meaningless in the end, anyways. I'd vote for Iverson just to piss everyone else off.

I think only some of the players should be fan selected. The rest should actually be the best at the time. That way players who have earned the spot don't get passed up.

Danny Granger has to be p*ssed. He really would have deserved a spot.

Allen Iverson getting a spot is not okay, but the runner-up (3rd guard) would have been Vince Carter. That would have been a major travesty. He isn't even the best guard on his own team! Sometimes two wrongs make a right.

No, the starting 5 are fan selected, and then the coaches pick the reserves.

I'm more shocked he's on the Pistons then anything else. I'm so used to him in Denver or Phillie.

he's still popular because when it's all said and done, he's still one of the best to ever play the game. By no means does he deserve to be an all-star this year, let alone start but c'mon people, no need to turn this into an iverson hate thread. He's a hall-of-famer and THE best pound for pound offensive player in history. And stop blowing the whole practice thing out of proportion and calling him out as a jerk, he's matured and has been a class act for a while now

Who is more likeable than AI? he is one great human being, Im just wondering how did fans vote for him if his performance has gone downhill since he left the sixers.

Its not meaningless. Whenever a veteran player looks back at his carreer his all star appearances are always mentioned and noted. And its one of the major factors leading to a hall of fame induction.

Yes I know that. But you said "only some of the players should be fan selected" which is what happens, the "some" being starters. "the best at the time" are selected by coaches. Unless you meant something else...
