Brett Favre to Cover Madden NFL 09

While speculation might suggest Eli Manning or Adrian Peterson, EA has gone with longtime Packers star Brett Favre. The announcement is expected tonight on Letterman.

GameDaily BIZ has discovered that Electronic Arts is preparing to announce recently retired Green Bay Packers quarterback and three-time AP MVP Brett Favre as the cover athlete for the upcoming Madden NFL 09, which is slated to hit store shelves on August 12.

According to the Facebook site for Madden NFL 09, the cover athlete is expected to be announced on April 25. Moreover, a quick check of the CBS schedule for Late Show with David Letterman shows that Favre is going to appear as one of Dave's guests tonight (April 24). For the past few years, EA has used late-night shows to announce the Madden cover. Last year Jimmy Kimmel's show was used to announce Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young for Madden 08.

Choosing a retired player to cover the game is certainly an interesting choice, but this year's Madden represents the 20th anniversary of the popular football franchise, so perhaps EA wanted to do something unique. And Favre is unquestionably one of the best to ever play the game, leading the Packers to two Super Bowls, in addition to compiling records for most career NFL touchdown passes, most career NFL passing yards, most career pass completions, and most career victories as a starting quarterback, so it's hard to argue with EA's choice.

At least Favre can't be affected by the dreaded Madden cover curse, unless of course his retirement package suddenly falls apart...

Lame. I don't want to see that old fart on the madden cover lol. Should always be a young star. This is a lame attempt to sell more games by making peopel think it willbe a collectors item someday.

lame Ea... just lame.

I would love to see what the curse does to Tom brady, but I wouldnt want a choker on the madden cover. I would really like an updated sig though. Bit off topic though....oh well.

How does a 3 time superbowl winner become a choker after losing 1 of 4 SuperBowls? Did he throw 4 ints? Did he crumble when the game was on the line? Sorry but last time I checked Brady led the Pats to a TD with a few minutes left. The defense choked. Okay so the Pats destroy the Steelers on a yearly basis, let it go man.

I hate the Pats as much as the next guy but to call Brady a choker is just stupid.

So will Madden's mancrush on Favre finally result in Favre receiving an in-game overall rating of 101? (I haven't played Madden in a while. Players are still rated on a scale of 1-100, right?)

QFT. Losing 1 of the 4 superbowls you have lead your team to makes you a choker? Please, Tom Brady is the most clutch QB in the game right now. Stop with the jealous hate, its getting old.

lol so driving down scoring to take the lead in the 4th but having your defence give up the lead with a little time left is choking?

winning 3 of 4 superbowls you have been in is choking?

Well if having my teams qb win 3 of every 4 superbowls he is in makes hima choker.. id gladly take him. Considering how the majority of qbs in this league never see a superbowl.

Eli Manning would have been my choice. I'm sure people could argue stats but the dude won one of the most exciting Super Bowls in recent memory with one of the most memorable passes. Put him on the cover.

Although you have a good argument I would say lets wait till next season and see how he does. I have liked eli for along time, i was a fan of his before he won the superbowl unlike the majority of people out there who just bashed him and wanted him cut.

Yes but when it is released he will not be the QB of the Packers. So whats the point? You can't play as him. Unless they have some gay retired players team..

I think it's great as Favre is my all time favorite athlete, and a retired player on the cover is (oh my god! not in Madden) innovation, probably the biggest on they'll have in the next ten years or so. Sad but true. No need to get up in arms here Favre is one of Madden's alltime favorite players.

Maybe they'll have the 96 Packers as a retro team, it would almost make me buy the game.

That was twelve years ago and unlike other players with substance abuse problems Favre was enough of a man to come out in the open and receive treatment.

Exactly!

I don't know what's the big deal with people mentioning that the player in this year's cover is white. Does that really matter? It didn't matter who was on the cover. Whether it was Favre, Eli, Taylor, Seau, or Polamalu, I could care less. Although I think having Favre on the cover is a good choice, I want to know what EA is going to do in the game to bring back football, what used to be in Madden games.

Favre on the cover is a joke. I'm tired of hearing about Brett Favre, he's not the best player to play the game. He's not even the best QB to play the game. Should have been a current player.

He has had the supporting cast around him his hole carear along with a line to block for him. All i know is that it is alsome the favre is on the cover. Good job maden people

You know nothing about football if you think Brady had talent around him his whole career. Tom Brady had GARBAGE receivers back in 2002 and 2004. They were an underdog team that was full of decent but not amazing players. This O line he has now really wasnt around back then either it developed over the years.

PS: Favre isnt a top 5 QB. Check his stats, he has always been an interception machine.

Heres some who are above Favre

Montana

Elway

Unitis

Marino

Bradshaw

Brady

Manning

That list isn't in order its just a quick list of people who are better then favre. The only reason some peole think he is so good is because of his long career. But if you look his stats are horrible. he threw way to many Ints.

[QUOTE="Master_Jdog"]Is this the first white guy to cover madden?
lets see- 2008 Vince Young, black
2007- Shaun Alexander, black
2006- Donovan Mcnabb, black
2005- Ray Lewis, Black
2004- Micheal Vick, Black
2003, Marshal faulk, black
2002- Daunte Culpper, black
2001- Eddie George black
2000- Dorsey Leavens, black
1999- Garrison Hearst, black
yup only white guy ever to appear on the cover of madden.
mrgab

Surprised Peyton Manning was never on the cover.

Well Peyton was endorsing NFL Fever game's for a couple of years, I guess that's the reason.
