I'd have to go with Jason Witten. He is always reliable and is built like a truck. WHenever I see him play he always seems to do pretty well.

I am going to be a homer and say Vernon Davis. The man has crazy skills and athletic ability. Right up there with him would be Gates and Witten though.

Jason Witten. I think Antonio Gates is more of a dynamic receiving option, but Witten is the complete package at TE. Fantastic blocker, and a great receiver too.

Dallas Clark - even without Peyton, he is a pretty amazing player.

Gates is the only correct answer. He can play 10 games, and still end up with more yards and TDs then any other tightend in the NFL.

The talented TE's put up huge numbers and scare the other teams D. They aren't in there to BLOCK. Plus... every offensive position is called on to block in one way or another. The good TE's in the league are the one's that scare the S' out of the other team with their offensive skills. A.Gates... J.Witten... D.Clarke.. V.Davis... J.Finley... these TE's can all dominate a game, get open down field and in some cases take it the distance. Blocking Shmocking.

The great ones do both. A bad run blocking TE is worthless, I don't care how many passes he catches. Thats why I give Jason Witten the nod over gates.

Precisely. They both are about equals as receivers, with maybe a slight nod towards Gates. But Witten is a superior blocker, no question. Thus, Witten>Gates.

Not. Even. Close. Gates, quite possibly, is the greatest receiving TE in NFL history. Written is maybe equal to Dallas Clark.

Just compare the numbers. The only advantage that Gates has is in TDs. Yards and receptions, Witten leads. Plus, Witten hasn't missed a start since 2006. Gates has recently become an injury concern. Also, Gates has a ways to go yet to become the greatest receiving TE ever. John Mackey, Kellen Winslow, Mike Ditka, Tony Gonzalez. Ways to go.

I'd take Vernon Davis over anyone.

Fred Davis is also climbing up ranks. If he improves his blocking game is is almost top 5....soon

Well they aren't put out there to catch the ball all the time. There's a combination of both blocking and receiving. That's why they play the position because they have a big body to block but also are athletic enough to go out and catch passes.

Since 2004, only Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, retired wide receiver Randy Moss, and current free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens have caught more touchdowns than Gates. He has DOUBLE the amount of TDs in his career. Let me repeat that, he has twice as many. Playing 10 games last year, Gates had 10 TDs and nearly 900 yards. Witten, playing 16 games, less TDs (9) and only 100 more yards. Since Gates rookie year, he has never had a season with fewer then 8 TDs, Witten has ONLY had one where he has had more then 8 .

If you were looking for career wise, chute Witten in 127 games, has 7077 yards (11.6 average), 623 receptions, and 36 TDs... Gates in 123 games, has 6886 yards (13.3 average), 519 receptions and 72 TDs....

Oh cool, thanks. So yeah, congrats to Witten for have 100 more catches for less yards. I would like to add, that I respect the hell out of Jason Witten. I can only hope he gets injured, because otherwise he destroys the Eagle's linebackers.

Because the only aspect of being a TE is their receiving ability. Gates is god awful at blocking, sad really considering how big he is.

Is he ever really asked to block? I almost never see him in the block with the offensive linemen. They usually spread him out more like a Wideout, and he creates more mismatches then any other tightend.

I've seen him attempt to block and its pretty awful. He's the best receiving TE for sure, Witten is a real TE though. Actually makes an impact in the running game unlike Gates.

as a receiver, its close between gates and davis. all-around(which is more valuable imo), i'm going with heath miller. or at least the most underrated.

Jeremy Shockey was awesome. But the best TE is obviously Antonio Gates, he makes up for his crappy blocking ability with his dynamic play-making ability.
