I'd have to go with Jason Witten. He is always reliable and is built like a truck. WHenever I see him play he always seems to do pretty well.

I am going to be a homer and say Vernon Davis. The man has crazy skills and athletic ability. Right up there with him would be Gates and Witten though.
Jason Witten. I think Antonio Gates is more of a dynamic receiving option, but Witten is the complete package at TE. Fantastic blocker, and a great receiver too.
Gates is the only correct answer. He can play 10 games, and still end up with more yards and TDs then any other tightend in the NFL. No_Hablo_InglesBut there is way more to being a TE than catching passes.
But there is way more to being a TE than catching passes. The talented TE's put up huge numbers and scare the other teams D. They aren't in there to BLOCK. Plus... every offensive position is called on to block in one way or another. The good TE's in the league are the one's that scare the S' out of the other team with their offensive skills. A.Gates... J.Witten... D.Clarke.. V.Davis... J.Finley... these TE's can all dominate a game, get open down field and in some cases take it the distance. Blocking Shmocking.[QUOTE="No_Hablo_Ingles"]Gates is the only correct answer. He can play 10 games, and still end up with more yards and TDs then any other tightend in the NFL. monkeytoes61

They both are about equals as receivers, with maybe a slight nod towards Gates. But Witten is a superior blocker, no question. Thus, Witten>Gates.i5750at4Ghz
They both are about equals as receivers, with maybe a slight nod towards Gates. monkeytoes61Not. Even. Close. Gates, quite possibly, is the greatest receiving TE in NFL history. Written is maybe equal to Dallas Clark.

Gates, quite possibly, is the greatest receiving TE in NFL history. Written is maybe equal to Dallas Clark. Just compare the numbers. The only advantage that Gates has is in TDs. Yards and receptions, Witten leads. Plus, Witten hasn't missed a start since 2006. Gates has recently become an injury concern. Also, Gates has a ways to go yet to become the greatest receiving TE ever. John Mackey, Kellen Winslow, Mike Ditka, Tony Gonzalez. Ways to go.

Yeah if this dude had a QB he would be the best TE in the NFL.I'd take Vernon Davis over anyone.
Fred Davis is also climbing up ranks. If he improves his blocking game is is almost top 5....soon

Are you avoiding catches and yards on purpose?ChuteboxNot at all, I typed the other post with my phone, using my Dsi to get stats and to get on Wikipedia.
I'd take Witten over anyone anyday for my team. Complete package. Glad he is most likely going to retire a Cowboy!
Gates is the only correct answer. He can play 10 games, and still end up with more yards and TDs then any other tightend in the NFL. No_Hablo_InglesBecause the only aspect of being a TE is their receiving ability. Gates is god awful at blocking, sad really considering how big he is.

I almost never see him in the block with the offensive linemen. They usually spread him out more like a Wideout, and he creates more mismatches then any other tightend.

I've seen him attempt to block and its pretty awful. He's the best receiving TE for sure, Witten is a real TE though. Actually makes an impact in the running game unlike Gates.
as a receiver, its close between gates and davis. all-around(which is more valuable imo), i'm going with heath miller. or at least the most underrated.
