Yep, in one single quarter, which is 12 minutes. That's about 3 points per minute.

A 33 points quarter for a team is good. He scored them all by himself.

Quite impressive.

You know what would be amazing? If he played defense. Or the other team for that matter.

Not many great players play defense, especially if they always have to carry the team. This is kind of a known fact in the NBA. Why would someone waste energy playing defense when they have to save their energy for offense?

Anyway, Melo was always talented. Sadly, Iverson held him back (I am an Iverson fan but I finally came to the realization he does more harm than good, just look at the Pistons now) and most people seem to forget that before Melo slapped that dude from the Knicks a few years ago and got suspended, he led the league in scoring and had his Nuggets sitting in first place.

Back in the day all great players played defense. Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen are known as two of the greatest players of all-time, and they were both annual staples of the all-defensive team. Kobe Bryant is a great defensive player as well.

Impressive, but I still think of him as a pansy after that sucker punch thing from a few years ago. Does anyone know the most points Kobe scored in one quarter during his 81 pt game?

1st quarter: 14 pts

2nd quarter: 12 pts

3rd quarter: 27 pts

4th quarter: 28 pts

Melo's 33 in one quarter is an NBA all-time record (actually tied with George Gervin who also scored 33 points in the 2nd quarter in 1970-something).

Here is a
video of all of Melo's 33 points (missing two free throws, tho):

Jordan won MVP honors in 87/88, along with the scoring title and defensive player of the year...

That's why I always consider Jordan the best. He was the best and dominated offensively and defensively. MVP, scoring title, AND Defensive player of the year in one year is amazing. Has anyone else ever done that before? Probably not, right? He also got the All-Star MVP in 88' and won the dunk contest.

EDIT:

Never mind, Olajuwon did it too.

Yeah, I know it was a record since I had sports center on all night while I was studying. :P

I just wanted to know how lose Kobe was to it. Thanks though.

Easy there folks. 33 points in a quarter is an incredible accomplishment, no matter how you slice it. Melo has some shortcomings in other areas and those have been well documented and can be mentioned at other times, but for the purposes of this thread true basketball fans should just tip their hats and acknowledge a spectacular performance.

No offense, but I'm glad that Michael Jordan didn't have your attitude towards sports. Defense is probably the most important part of a game; it wins championships. Except for the Celtics.

The '08 Celtics? They had one of the best if not the best defense in the league. But I get your point on defense, I completely agree.
