I hate when New York gets left out of this debate.
New York has teams with great history and fans.
The Rangers are one of the oldest Hockey teams in the NHL (and the NHL is getting popular again to the person who said its not a major sport) and some of the greatest players of all time, like Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Eddie Giacomin, Jaromir Jagr and Phil Esposito wore Rangers blue shirts at some point in their career.
The Knicks are one of the greatest franchises of all time, which makes their horrible slide the last few years so tragic. This is a legendary Franchise that used to go toe to toe with the great Lakers teams, as well as the Bulls who were lead by the likes of Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippin. James Dolan has run this team into the Ground.
The New York Yankees - nuff said
The New York Giants - One of the oldest teams in the NFL and won numerous NFL Championship, and 3 Super Bowl Championships. Even played in whats considered "The Greatest Game Ever Played" versus the Baltimore Colts.
The New York Mets - well.....New York like the Mets. But still, the 1986 Mets are one of the greatest Baseball stories ever told.
The New York Jets - Biggest Upset in NFL History vs. a Colts team lead by the great Johnny Unitas.
The New York Islanders - One of the greatest Hockey dynastys of all time. You can make the argument against them though, because even when they win no one goes to their games.
Aside from the Islanders, all these teams are VERY popular in New York, whether they're doing awful or winning championships. The most loyal sports fans I know, I are Mets fans. They haven't won anything in over 20 years, but every year, they're still saying "you gotta believe." Or Jets fans, who haven't won a Super Bowl in so long, and had to endure a 1 and 15 season, but were still dedicated to that team.
St. Johns used to be a WILDLY popular College Basketball team. But have suffered at the hands of a college that doesn't want to pour money into their basketball program to make it what it was. And people have really gotten behind Rutgers. And I still know plenty of people that root for the Hofstra Pride. Plus Hofstra has produced some great talent, like Marques Colston.
Sure they aren't the Michigan Wolverines, the Spartans or the Boston College Eagles, but that doesn't mean that New York isn't a great sports town.
Anyways, out of the two, I'm gonna have to say Boston. Detroit is awesome too, but Boston
