CUTLER speaking about meeting with his new Head Coach: "I went in there with every intention of solving the issue, being a Bronco, moving forward as a Bronco," Cutler said. "We weren't in there but about 20 minutes, [McDaniels] did most of the talking and as far as I'm concerned, he made it clear he wants his own guy. He admitted he wanted Matt Cassel because he said he has raised him up from the ground as a quarterback. He said he wasn't sorry about it. He made it clear that he could still entertain trading me because, as he put it, he'll do whatever he feels is in the best interest of the organization.

"At the end of the meeting, he wasn't like, 'Jay, I want you as our quarterback, you're our guy.' It felt like the opposite. He basically said that I needed to tell him if we can't work this out, to let him know," Cutler added. "I thought he was antagonizing me and that was disappointing because I was ready to move on, committed as a Bronco. Really, I figured we'd hash things out, shake hands, laugh a little and move forward. What happened [Saturday] was the last thing I expected. If I didn't think it could be fixed, I never would have come back to Denver. It was painfully obvious to me and Bus [Cook, his agent] it's not something they want to fix."

Something doesn't seem quite right here. Is McDaniels some sort of powermongering ego-maniac? Does he have a secret plan?

Or is he just plain stupid?

Cutler is a young, talented QB with TONS of upside.

Am I missing something here?

I dont think so, i kinda feel like Cutlet is being a baby. As an athelete you need to accept that you may be treated as a commodity. McDaniels felt that acquiring Cassel would be better for the team, perhaps only because of his experience coaching him, but thats really a moot point. McDaniels didnt apologize for pursuing a player that he thought would help the team. Its part of the game, it happens at all position to all players. Cutler may be great and have a lot of potential, but he felt slighted that anyone would ever dream of replacing him and is acting like a child imo.

I don't think Cutler is handling it well either, BUT, I don't blame him for being angry. Aside from trying to trade him (if your gonna try and trade your Franchise Quarterback, you better seal the deal), the biggest problem is that McDaniels lied constantly about this.

Honestly that quote makes Cutler sound like a bit of a baby. Did he want the coach to lie to him? That apparently is the lesson that the coach should have taken away from it.

duxup

But the coach DID lie.

He said right after Cassel went to the Chiefs that Cutler was not being considered as part of a trade.

Now, he tells Cutler to his face that he WAS being considered and that he DID want Cassel to be his QB.

I know Cutler has a little bit of "diva" in him... but sheesh - McDaniels is acting like Cutler should just bend over and accept whatever comes up.

EXACTLY! Think about it, would you be comfortable playing for a coach who has done nothing but lie since being hired?

So he should have kept lying? You'd think if Cutler was being honest about walking into that room prepared to be a Bronco he would have appreciated the honestly. No instead he just went on whining.

McDaniels is at fault completely. He lied, plain and simple. I don't blame Cutler for wanting out. Why would you want to play for someone who you feel isn't to be trusted?

if the Broncos don't want him, I'm sure he can come to the Jets. The Broncos can have Kellen Clemens if they want :P

If Cutler was a professional it doesn't matter what his coach says. He has a job to do, and do the job the best he can. And if he put up numbers they way he can then most likely the coach would say "Cutler's our guy."

In simple words, "Put up or shutup."

BTW, I'm a Jets fan and would love to have him here! :D

Cutler by no means handled this situation proffesionally but the fact is that Josh McDaniels did start this mess... and Cutler did act like a baby. Maybe this is the "McDaniels" toughness test, or maybe he just really doesn't think Jay is the guy in Denver. We will find out next season.

Eh, this situation is making Cutler look like a drama queen. I realize he may feel a bit betrayed, but by complaining so much he may tear the team apart. Of course, we don;t know for sure what really happened behind closed doors so its tough to say for sure though.

Honestly I feel both are at fault and that culter is getting blamed far too much. McDaniels should share some blame. first of all he decides that the 2nd ranked offense in the league last year needs a new qb......lets be honest Cutler > Cassells. Cassells is still unproven one good season with NEW ENGLAND(caps on purpose) does not mean you will be good, remember he had wes welker and randy moss. nevertheless what he did was excellent for his first year, still cutler has proven himself IMO over the past few years.

People are right sports is a business and Cutler should not complain so much, but still it sounds like hes made an effort to be cooperative, but McDaniels seems to be solely interested in Cassells. again this is stupid, denver needs to fix their defense, not offense. I know McDaniels didn't start the whole trade idea, but honestly he should have been smart enough to realize its over and accept having cutler. Telling a pro bowl quaterback that he is dispencible is stupid. Again the idea oftelling cutler he could be gone at anytime shows that McDaniels is really not that smart when it comes to team chemistry.

Anyways for anyone who cares NFL.com just annouced Cutler has skipped the team meetings and requested a trade.....i really hope the BUCS can get him.....but bitter old mcDaniels will probably try to put him in Detriot to "stick it to him". I know i was baised to mcDaniels, but I still feel its a 50/50 for blame and honestly its sad......both are acting like children, but McDaniels is the coach and should act more mature and he definitely is not.

I think some things were said or misunderstood to start this off, but right now I think Cutler is overreacting a little too much.

Although I would love to see Cutler traded---makes for great NFL news, I don't think he will be traded. Something will be worked out and you'll hear both coach and QB say they're both professionals and make nice. :) I don't think the owners want to see a bad, rebuilding season, esp. with their defense stinking it up so much, andIFCutler is gone. If he is, expect a really really bad season Denver fans.

The Vikes should make a run for Cutler----they can pick up a wide receiver in the draft, or free agency and they'll be set on offense and defense. :)

Well, McDaniels is gonna wind up competing for a #1 overall pick next season if they move Cutler...

Then McDaniels really WILL get to hand-pick his next QB.

Perhaps this is his plan all along...

My question is: why does it seem like no one has made a blipping serious offer for Cutler yet? What are they waiting for? And invitation? This is an "offer they can't refuse" type of situation.

Im pretty sure the Jets, Lions, Bucs, and a few other teams are talking about it. Trading for a franchise quarterback is serious business. If the quarterback contradicts the style of the head coach's offense, then he may not be the one they want no matter how good he is. Like someone mentioned in this thread, its all about chemistry...

I don't doubt many are trying but considering what happened the last time news got out I'm sure everyone involved wants to keep it quiet for now.

This time he asked to be traded, so the only bad that will come out of this is possibly Jay Cutler having a lowered morale, and no doubt that the Broncos 2009 season is going down the drain.

Perhaps we need to be IN Denver to understand what Jay Cutler is really like?

Outside of Denver, we rely on national news outlets for Cutler news. Most of that news is highlights of Cutler's big plays and generally positive QB skills/potential.

It's very similar to Donovan McNabb in Philly. Outside of Philly, every sees McNabb as a class-A QB who's just a play or two away from a Superbowl Ring. Nationally, he's highly rated and respected.

BUT THEN YOU GO INTO THE CITY ITSELF... and read the local newspapers and listen to the local radio stations and you are introduced to the whiny, crybaby, choke-artist, disappointing, self-serving player who doesn't take responsibility. A player who blames others for losses or who thinks he's not being appreciated or paid well or who puts his foot in his mouth or who thinks he's not surrounded by talent to put them over the top.

I don't live in Denver, so maybe I'm being blinded by the National Media coverage or general hype. But it does remind me of what McNabb deals with in Philly.

Until they win a Championship, they are considered expendable sports-media fluff.

Cutler doesn't get nearly as much criticism as McNabb does. This whole scenario damaged his reputation, and he isn't as popular as he used to be... but he is not hated nearly as much as Donovan is in Philly.

I live in Denver and Im a huge Broncos fan so Ive obviously been keeping up on the whole situation... It all starts when Mike Shanahan was fired. Many fans and players were shocked by this and even though he recieved plenty of criticism from the hometown fans, he was still believed to be the best Coach for the Broncos. Jay Cutler didnt like it when Shanahan was fired, as he thought we were headed in the right direction and he thought the staff would start to really focus on the defense. Cutler was then told by Pat Bowlen(the owner) that they would retain pretty much the whole offensive staff. Then McDaniels came in and fired several offensive coaches, including Cutlers mentor and Qbs Coach, Jeremy Bates, so Cutler already had a sour taste in his mouth at this point. McDaniels then went on several interviews saying that he couldnt wait to work with Cutler, and that hes excited to work with him and hes the QB of the Denver Broncos. Well, a couple weeks later, he tried to trade Cutler. I mean, how would you feel about that, seriously? Imagine working at a company for 20 years, then one day youre told that youre being fired in favor for a 16 year old pimple faced kid. You wouldnt like it too much. In my opinion Cutler IS NOT being a baby. This whole thing was brought on by McDaniels. He lied to Cutler and tried to trade him for a 1 hit wonder. Trust me, if that had happened when free agency began, people in Denver wouldve showed up at McDaniels house with torches and pitchforks. This 32 year old rookie head coach came into the Broncos organization and has nearly destroyed the season, I would be mad if I was Cutler.

Ok, here is my take on things. First off, Cutler is not being a baby. Yes, we all understand that the NFL is first and foremost a business, but in any business there is a certain level of RESPECT. If McDaniels was considering trading him, he should have made contact with Bus Cook or Cutler to have a meeting to let them know of the forthcoming plans. Now before anyone says anything, NO, I am not expecting them to let every single player know if there are getting traded, but your FRANCHISE QB, the young QB with dozens more years left in him, needs to know these types of things. Cutler has not been the problem with the Broncos inability to make past the regular season. that falls solely on the defense. IF McDaniels wanted to trade some ppl he should have targeted the defense. Now im a Patriots fan and Cassell had a great year, but thats it, one great year. he wsa also in one of the best systems in the league. WHy would you want to trade for him over Cutler? Yes its a coach's right to do what he sees fit but GOSH, use your brain. Belichick has taught you better than that. Now Bowlen did tell Cutler the offensive staff will remain intact and what happens, all fired. Thats the first lie. McDaniels tells him they werent considering a trade, second lie. Now its all about, "He's our QB." Give me a break. YOu have not respect this man enough to call him your qb. As far as Cutler being a baby, has anyone noticed that he is being INTERVIEWED about this whole thing. Its called the media. If you get interviewed you are going to answer the questions right. McDaniels and Bowlen have handled this horribly and I hope Cutler makes his way to another them that will show him the respect every player deserves. Oh, and i live in TN but i am not a Titans fan, but the Titans need to get rid of Vince Young and Lyndale White and get Cutler. Cutler should have been here in the first place.

Shouldn't the coach feel like a commodity also? He should work with what he has and that's a great QB who is still learning. Sounds like a lazy a-ss coach to me.

My broncos wont make it with a TO attitude at the headcoach spot.
