What do you guys think is the greatest upset in history? I would go with the "Miracle on Ice" where the Americans beat the Russians 4-3 in the 1980s Olympics.

Maybe as a Patriots fan the choice is obvious but the 2007 Super Bowl to me was by far the biggest upset of all my lifetime (18 years).
Edit: Rephrased my gramatically wrong statement. Thank Wally lol.
I think the Miracle on Ice was just a really exciting game / upset, not the greatest upset in history IMO. There has to be more history for me to judge the greatness of the upset IMO. Olympic games are so much like one off events folks can pad the level of the upset without much solid history.
Appalachian State vs Michigan was a darned surprising upset. Buster Douglass pulled one off too.
Greece beating Portugal in the Euro Cup 2004 finals.
World Cup 1950 Finals Uruguay beating Brazil in Brazil.
Super Bowl III Jets beating Colts.
Super Bowl XXXVI Patriots beating the Rams.
Super Bowl XLII Giants beating the Patriots.
The Redskins Replacement Team beating the Cowboys in 1987 at Texas Stadium.

Russia was the best hockey team in the world at the time, and a group of Amateurs beat them. Definitely U.S. Hockey Team. I don't believe any PRO sports game can be considered an upset. If you are a paid professional you are an elite athlete at your given sport. So games like the Rams losing to the Pats in the SB is an upset RELEVANT to pro sports, but not the grand scheme of things. I mean the rams were 14 point favorites in that game, to put that into perspective, the Ravens were 13.5 point favorites over the Browns last week. If clv would have won would it be an upset? Sure, to an extent. But they are both pro teams playing on a level playing field, one team was just better.
But when you look at the Olympic hockey team, you have a bunch of college kids who had NEVER played at a professional level against the BEST hockey team in the world. That SAME russian team had beat the NHL all star team the previous year. And keep in mind, Russian players didn't play in the NHL during those days due to the Cold War, so don't think "well if they weren't in the NHL how good could they be"?
I mean there are always debates on here like "could USC or Florida beat the Lions"? or something like that. Well that's the best of the best amateurs vs the worst of the worst pros. Just imagine the best of the best amateurs vs the best of the best pros. That's like UNC beating the Lakers or USC beating the Patriots. That's what that Hockey game was
*Looks at sig* Yeah, I agree. When in a game you complete more passes to the opposite team, it is a huge upset to play in the Super Bowl.Probably when the Bears somehow got to the Superbowl with Rex Grossman in 2006.

Seriously man, your sig is what made me think of that. Good thing they got rid of him.

I wonder if folks would be so quick to just claim that if the US lost...I think the Miracle on Ice was just a really exciting game / upset, not the greatest upset in history IMO. Stop insulting Rex, that game was only because he was distracted by the New Year's Eve party:(
Its gotta be Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson, that was the end of an era and pretty much the end of boxing.
A personal favorite of mine is when the Pistons upset the Lakers in 2004 4-1. The whole series Kobe was saying they were just feeling them out...that was an end to an era also.
1913 U.S. Open. Francis Ouimet, a 20 year old amateur, defeats Harry Vardon and Ted Ray (who between the the two of them had 9 Major Championships) in an 18 hole playoff.
The Giants ruining the Patriots' perfect season.Kenbo325Not even the biggest upset in Super Bowl history, let alone sports history.
