since the NFL is trying very hard to expand the audience of the great sport, they make sure several season games are being played in Europe each season (now that they got rid of NFL Europe, which would never give them the proper entertainment of the NFL), i was wondering how any Europeans feel about it and if they like it?

i think they're really missing out if they haven't given it a chance yet. from the looks of that Giants game last year it seemed like a lot of you guys really enjoy it! i think its awesome, my wish is that one day football is included in the Olympics because football athletes are among the best in the world and deserve a chance to win gold medals like everyone else. its not uncommon in the NFL for guys running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds and squating 600 pounds. thats world class

I'm a Euro living in NA and i have to admit i despised the NFL and the sport. I saw it live once and actually enjoyed it. I can't stand watching it on the TV because the camera is too close. I don't care what facial expession the quarterback has when i can't see who he's trying to throw too.

I´m from Spain and I love the NFL, but here in Spain and in Europe the NFL is not a very popular sport. Soccer is the only option and the second ones are basketball, tennis and Formula 1.

It´s unlikely that people here will open their minds to this sport, they´re soccer-absorbed

I LOL'ed like crazy when I saw that because I played that part in the musical back in high school!

I feel so embarrased now that I think about it. I was either desperate for attention or deluded in thinking I can act. :P

Well...actually, there was a pretty cute girl in the lead, but that's besides the point!

Over hyped, overly long and just not entertaining.

The NFL will never be truly embraced by Europe because you persist in calling it football when the ball is only in contact with a foot for seconds in the over all game time.

NFL in the Olympics! That is the funniest thing ive heard all year. American football will never be in the Olympics because everything is in imperial measurements.

You know I have same complaint about every american sport. Why is the camera zoomed in so much? It is so hard to understand what is going on. Like I understand the game but I would like to see how the plays form and why it was so successful or poorly executed. This is why I watch South American and European sports. I watched my first Hockey game live this past year and I found more respect for the game when I could see the whole ICE, but when I tried to watch it on tv I was turned off because so much beauty of the game is cut out.

I believe also the game is too complicating as there are way too many rules and plus they have rugby.

I'm a European living in Canada, and I can't say I'm a huge fan of the sport. Maybe with the Bills moving to Toronto I'll finally get proper coverage of a team. With a team I can finally cheer for it should be a lot more fun to watch. All but one of my European friends (living here or in Europe) actually enjoy this sport. It's really not popular at all. Most of the people who attend the European games are Americans living in Europe, or just people who want to witness something new and "American".

Yes it is a regular season home game, just like the one between the Dolphins and Giants last year, tickets sold out very quickly. It's a Saints home game, yet again they lose another one.

Well its the best reason ive got!

I'm sure its exclusion has something to do with the lack of global participation of American Football and im sure i read somewhere that team events were being scaled back.

simple, we have three sports in the UK and there just isnt room for a fourth.

we had a surge of basketball recently in the Uk but it never truly took off but it can do in countries like spain, france and germany because they substitute rugby/cricket (french do play rugby though)

its not so much a case of the typical "its not football its rugby with pads" its a case of it just cannot be marketed very well.

besides, how many americans can say that cricket or rugby is doing well in the US? would you rather watch those than baseball or american football?

I dont believe it will ever become truly popular over here in the UK due to the fact that football (soccer to you guys) is basicaly a religion here, alot of people here are just plain ignorant towards the game because they think it doesnt make you hard to wear pads etc its a shame because i think its just plain awesome, such a complete game taticaly physicaly and as someone said the athletes are very very talented. unlike the premiership its so balanced thanks mainly to the draft and the fact that any team can pick up a player for the right amount of money in free agency so any non brit fans i urge you to at least give it a try (if you can stay up till like 4 in the morning to finish watching a game) got my tickets for saints-chargers game cost me several hundred quid for 4 tickets can't wait

There are clearly fans as even sending a craptastic game to London as they did earlier this year sold quickly.

Of course it is an oddly complex game with all sorts of funny rules for various positions. I can see why it hasn't spread much.

But the Cowboys aren't supposed to play the Saints this year. It's NFC east vs NFC West. And the only NFC South Team the Cowboys play is the Bucs.

They are not fanatics about it that is for sure. I don't think that NFL Football can be or should be compared to European soccer. NFL Football will never gain the sort of traction in europe like Soccer will in America. If you really want to know why baseball or nfl football isn't that popular in Europe watch three matches of Rugby and Cricket. Those games are similar to NFL Football and Baseball but at a much higher tempo and with no commercial interuptions. NFL fans should take heart that they are among the most well paid athletes in the world ahead of soccer players in europe, rugby, and cricket. Yet, the sport that they play is largely regional. Well when half the game is filled with commercials for the biggest and the newest suv, beer, and etc it is easy to understand why. If you want the europeans to enjoys NFL football turn them into consumer whores like Americans. Hell I still bitterly remember world cup 98 and ESPN cropping live matches to get commercials. I felt a tremendous shame and utter disgust at that moment. and it is at that moment that it became crystal clear as to why these sports aren't particularly popular on either continent.

No, NFL football isn't called football because it has a foot long ball. That isjust asinine. It is called football because in the 19th century it was one of many sports bearing the name football. Rugby was called football once and NFL Football is a derivative of Rugby.

There is a league in Canada with just as much tradition as the NFL. Football is the number two sport in Canada. The evolution of the two games have be quiet different but is still football.

American and Canadan Football were both played with round balls that you kicked and ran with with. They started to run the ball more and kick less . As it was kicked less the ball became less round. The throw gaming like it is today has only be around for about thirty years and throwing was hardly used into the 70's.

The baseball uses feet and it is in the Olympics, so your French-based Imperial Unit must not mean that much.

One thing that should noted is that CFL is much more of a physical game. We the lack of a TE, 12 players a side, no fair catch, no halo rule, and the extra 10 yards on the field you have to very tough to play in the CFL in is not like the Arena League.

i don't get why people are complaining about commercials they usually don't show more than 2 minutes of it unless it's at the end of a quarter and they only show commercials when:

After a PAT has been kicked

End of a Quarter or half

Timeout's but they don't do commercials in the 4th Quarter unless it's a blowout

and usually if a commercial is playing they interrupt the commercial to show the game if it starts again and most of the time, like i said, it only 2 minutes of commercials

I tried getting into it just to give it an honest chance, but to be honest I just can't watch a whole game of it. It's just too 'American'. It's very hard to explain, but the way in which it is presented just makes me feel uncomfortable in a way. Apart from that, the game just isn't interesting enough to me, even though I do like to play NFL video games from time to time.

American Football will never be big in Europe, I'm positive on that. Of course there will be attempts to market this sport in Europe (there have been plenty), but it just doesn't fit within the European sports tradition. This is exactly why Beckham won't change the fact that football (or soccer if you will) will never be big in the US.

I don't have a general explanation for this, but from what I've seen sports, or at least football in Europe are more part of social life, whereas in America it's mostly marketed as a form of entertainment. Also, it's a habit in the NFL of teams to occasionally switch towns if they can get a better stadium elsewhere, which is why supporter loyalty is connected to a geographical location rather than a particular club in America. Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but this is what I've been told by several Americans I know. The point is that it'll just be extremely hard to create a supporting tradition in Europe that equals the one of association football.

I'm an American and I like soccer more than football. It amazes me how much the professional soccer players run in a game. :|

I'll have to see one of these "European soccer" games sometimes, because USA soccer is quite boring.

I'm sure that Europeans don't think much of American football at all. Too bad, but its more of an American tradition.

NFL just seems to me like a more boring version of rubgy, and I just couldn't see it ever being popular in Europe given how huge football is.

IDK i've seen rugby and i thought it was boring :?

I tried getting into it just to give it an honest chance, but to be honest I just can't watch a whole game of it. It's just too 'American'. It's very hard to explain, but the way in which it is presented just makes me feel uncomfortable in a way. Apart from that, the game just isn't interesting enough to me, even though I do like to play NFL video games from time to time.

I'm a European, and I can more or less tell you that the NFL doesn't even show up on the radar in Europe. Its basically just flat out soccer. I dont mind the NFL, but lets just say that the Europeans find gridiron as boring as Americans find soccer boring. Nothing more, nothing less. Not a major surprise either, just how it is.
