Here's the story:http://nfl-facts-and-rumors.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/26898362

The 49ers are having a press conference today where they will officially make the announcement that he has agreed to a 5 year deal.

Kinda expected it, but I was still a little surprised by the desicion.

I still liked Singletary...

Damn, I was really hoping Josh McDaniels would get the job so he could trade Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis to the Cowboys for a 5th and a 6th.

I loved him when he was a coach and I think things just didn't swing his way

I love Jim too and I think he'll do well there

No one is going to turn down 40+ million (25 without any incentives)

I haven't felt this happy about a 49ers' hire, maybe ever; This move is just so traditional niner like in every way. Harbaugh is an O guy, he's developed QB's, he's turned around two programs, he uses a pro ****system, and he's a disciple of Bill Walsh. I can't wait for him to kick Carroll's ass again. 8) :D

Good move by the Niners, he should do well. They looked really impressive in their wins, but some of their losses were just horrible. As much as I like Mike Singletary, I just never really thought he did that well as an NFL coach. I was surprised at what he did last season and I thought he'd carry over well int this season, but I think most of the Niners' problems this season were his. Also, there's one more Chicago connection in NFL coaching trees.

this is great news for 49ers fans. He's not going to do that much better then Singletary though, you can have the best coach in the world but it's not going to change how awful their QB's are

i dont see the 49ers going anywhere no time soon...a coach change wont change anything only if they pick up a decent qb.

For you and everyone else ragging on Alex Smith, look at his numbers since coming back from injury: 61.7 completion percentage, 5 touchdowns, 1 interception, 8.15 yards per compeltion average, 204 yards per game. Those aren't Pro Bowl numbers by any stretch, but he can't be asked to do much more than he did in those four games. He did his job, the rest of the team weren't really doing their jobs in those two losses. It should also be pointed out that one of those games, the one with his worst completion percentage, was a 38-something whomping of a division rival in which he passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns. If a quarterback falls into their lap they should take him, but they're not hurting at the position. Hell, even Troy Smith came in and won some games for them. I think the biggest problem this past season has been the coaching staff, and Jim Harbaugh should have no problem winning with Alex Smith.

I would like him to succeed, but him succeeding would mean the Seahawks needing a winning record to win the division. So, I hope the 49ers are terrible again.

Oh, and he just said that he would be running a West Coast offense, in the birthplace of that system. That is wrong.

I don't understand why a lot of people act like getting a good coach is going to totally turn around a team. If the team isn't good enough, it doesn't matter who is coaching them. I think the 49ers have potential to be good, but Harbaugh can only do so much like every other coach. Who knows, he might have a good run with them, he might not.

I'm really happy for him! He's a great coach, a great guy, etc. I really wanted him to come to Michigan, but I figured that it wouldn't happen, although it would have been a total dream. He'll do great at San Fran. Easy conference, Frank Gore, Willis, and a good spot to maybe draft Mallett or Locker.

Hahaha! He totally would have done that too! I'm very happy with our selection for coach now! I can't wait to see how he gets this team going since it seems they needed an offensive mind more than anything. I am a big Singletary fan, but he just didn't know how to manage the offense or the team. I hope he does well elsewhere, but I think we got a great coach for our team.

1st off the NFC West will still be the worst team in the division. 8-8 or 9-7 could win it next year.

Secondly they really are a good qb away from being a legitimate playoff team. Alex Smith anhd Troy Smith might bew the worst 1-2 QB tandem in the league.

I would consider the playoffs a success for us, considering our misfortunes lately, and outside of maybe St.Louis (worst receiving core in the league)

I dont see anyone else in the division posing a threat.

I just wonder how much control he'll have? The Yorks are meddling owners and I'm not sold on that GM.

Those numbers aren't in the best context. Most of those stats were from the Seattle game. Smith's decision making is piss poor, his accuracy is wildly inconsistent, and he appears unable to keep track of down and distance. Pocket presence? No jokes please. Smith would be a fine backup QB, but as a starter, forget it. I can't put much stock into a QB who shines brightest when there's nothing to lose.

I don't know how you can knock his decision making when his average was above 60 percent and he threw one interception in four games. It's not all just from one game, either, as the majority of yards came in the game against Arizona, which was also the only game out of the four game stretch where his completion percentage was below sixty. I'll agree that he needs to be able to put up those kinds of numbers on a consistent basis, but the fact that he did so down the stretch shows that he has the talent to be able to do so. Once you see that a quarterback can play at a certain level on a consistent basis, like he did down the stretch, it's only a matter of getting him in the right mindset to replicate that success throughout the course of a season.

With expectations so high, I hate to think that he will only disappoint, but that is what I am leaning towards as the most likely outcome here. The 49ers need a QB before they can hope to compete for anything more than just the division crown of an incredibly weak division.

Wouldn't it be fitting instead of wrong? The revival of a once proud franchise is due to the return of the grand offensive scheme that was made famous there? I'm missing the wrong : P

I'm sorry but 2 or 3 games does not make up for his constant inability to be anything more than garbage. He's been giving plenty of chances, with plenty of different coaches, with plenty of different offensive styIes, and he's hardly lacking in support to at the least not be productive in the NFC west. It's time the 49ers take a hint. Alex Smith isn't the answer, and they clearly should consider moving on.
