8 years, 184 million, and no trade clause
Personally I think he's a fool that will retire with zero championships but that's just me
What's your take?

[QUOTE="blackngold29"]Is Minnesota still a small market team?Master_LiveNo, that's a fallacy. While thay're definitely not a small market team by any means they haven't been committed to success by any means. They have a great lineup now with Mauer and Morneau on top of the new found bat of Cuddyer but my god do they need starters. Baker and Slowey at the top of the rotation won't get it done in the AL.

I agree. I mean, I'm happy for the fans and it's cool to see a guy staying somewhere for a long time, but it sucks that he has an uphill battle for winning a championship staying in Minn.
Course he will, if the new commissioner puts in a salary cap. X360PS3AMD05When did this happen? New commish? It's not up to the commish anyway. Teams like the Yanks and the Sawks will never go for it. So if Minnesota is no longer "small market" we can stop pretending that teams like the Pirates have any chance.
He could retire with zero championships, but he'll be $184 million dollars richer. :| You ever wondered what it would be like to have $184 million dollars?Personally I think he's a fool that will retire with zero championships but that's just me

But it does say that it is time for the RedSox to lock up Victor Martinez.
I'm a little surprised Mauer didn't give the Twins more of a home team discount. I was expecting $18-20M per year, not 23. While $23M is still cheaper than what he would've landed on the open market, it can't be THAT much cheaper.

Messiahbolical-
Yes but he left 45-65 million dollars on the table to retire with zero championships
Usually a player will pick one, either play for the money or play for the championships
Mauer chose neither one
Yes, 185 isn't anything to sneeze at but it's also not that great compared to the offers he was going to get in the offseason PLUS having a chance to win and cement himself as an all time great

You don't know that.Oh easy.
The going rate for the best (fielding) FA last season was 180 million in a bad economy.
So Mauer who has numbers that rival Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio only gets 5 more before he enters his prime?
225 would have been the minimum he got in the offseason. He's literally someone you can build your entire team around and then if need be you can move him from catcher to another position because he's still so dangerous with the bat.
As for winning a championship? Ehh, look at the moves the Twins have made over the years and you really have to have the "half full" way of thinking to think they'll be one of the teams in the World Series in the next decade.

Numbers that rival Ted Williams, are you crazy? Ted Williams had an OPS of over 1.1 in his career while Mauer has a OPS below .900. Williams was a MUCH better hitter than Mauer is. This isn't that great of a deal for the Twins in a baseball sense but it certainly will please the fans. I probably wouldn't have given Mauer more than $21 million per season. And Jayson, I am curious to who you think would have given Mauer $28 million per season.[QUOTE="Jaysonguy"][QUOTE="Master_Live"] You don't know that.

And Jayson, I am curious to who you think would have given Mauer $28 million per season.Williams was a better hitter in relation to the league at the time, but pitching has come a long way since he played. Let me see if I can find the adjusted stats for all of those old players...
Ok, when the statistics are adjusted to put everybody in the same context, Ted Williams career OPS is 1.116, and Mauer's is .935, for a difference of only .181. For comparison, Joe Dimaggio's adjusted OPS is .954. So Mauer is at least in the ballpark with these guys. Considering how young Mauer is, the Twins got a bargain, provided his production stays the same.
Good signing and most likely going to help the Twins solidify their line-up for the long-run. With Target Field (new Twins park) being designed to be a hitter's park that Twins' line-up will do damage and their pitching has always been solid. It doesn't guarantee Mauer a ring, but then even the Red Sox and yankees huge payroll doesn't guarantee they win rings either. It just makes it easier for them to try and win one.
idk anyone else think Mauer might be a bit overvalued? Obviously a 365 average is sick, but last year was the first year he hit over 20 homers. If he keeps that up, then hes for sure in the top 3 players playing today, but idk I feel like an 8 year deal is a bit of risk...especiallyif he has to move to 1st with his power numbers settling back to earth

He would be worth this much even if he wasn't a 20+ home run guy, which he will continue to be. His RBI's have increased the past 3 seasons. The OBP is incredible. If he continues to hit for power, the Twins have a bargain. The only risky part of the deal is the length.

I actually think his power numbers would go up if he moves to first permanently. His legs would be fresher throughout the season which means better balance on his swing.
[QUOTE="Master_Live"]Just about offense, look at Piaza's numbers and tell me Mauer is better. TaCoDuDe
Mauer is significantly better defensively. You could even call Piazza a defensive liability. Mauer is a world class defensive catcher, in addition to his offensive skills.
Exactly, Joe Mauer is as close to a 5-tool catcher as we'll get.
Just about offense, look at Piaza's numbers and tell me Mauer is better. Master_LivePiaza was on the juice, Mauer is as a pure of a hitter as it gets
Everyone else was too, didn't make them as good as Piazza. X360PS3AMD05Mauer stats are pure, clean, and 100% steriod free.
I can say the same for Piazza, you can't prove either way, Mauer may very well be on HGH but i can't prove it either.X360PS3AMD05Touche'

Unfortunatly that is the stigma that all players will have to face which is unfair if they are actually clean
