The main reason why some players never reach their true potential in the NBA is attitude, in my opinion.
There are other reasons (Injuries, sickness, bad teams, bad coach/GM, bad situation, etc.)
A good example for bad attitude is Vince Carter. One of the most talented players in the past 15 years, but never could get over the hill. It's infuriating because he had and still has TONS of talent. You could make a point for Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury and such.
As for Injuries, there's the most obvious pick ever : Grant Hill (that would have been Walton, but I'm keeping this thread for today's NBA). There's also the likes of Greg Oden.
I'm missing on a lot of players (Damon Stoudamire, Chris Webber, Tracy McGrady, etc.).
But one player who I keep thinking of is Amar'e Stoudemire. I watch him play sometimes and wonder "Why the hell isn't he averaging 30 and 15 every night?" He has incredible athleticism, he's very quick for a 6'11" guy (he can blow by ANY center in the league, with ease), a very decent jumper up to 18', gets to the line easily, dunks on every single human being in the NBA, HE FREAKING PLAYS WITH STEVE NASH, who enhances his teammates stats by at least 50% etc. It just seems like he doesn't give a crap half the time. And he can't be bothered playing defense. That is frustrating, because you can see how talented he is, and then, he doesn't perform consistently like he should...
Who is yours?
EDIT : Yeah Beasley is incredibly frustrating. He just doesn't seem to care most games.
JR Smith is somewhat of a mystery, he's the most insconsistent player I've ever seen. Seriously, I've seen him hit four, five if not six 3s in a row, steal a couple of passes, dunk over people, score 35 in 28 minutes. Then another game he doesn't even score. That's gotta be a record. If there ever was a way to calculate inconsistency, he'd win hands down.
