Kobe now 5th
Congrats.

I hope people do not use points alone to set his place in history ...just like the NFL, it is much easier to score versus previous eras (hand checking, hard fouls, 3 point line, etc). Not saying he is not a great player...just saying pts should only be a part of the equation and should be adjusted for inflation/deflationrawsavon
Agreed, but I think it's fairly safe to say that even knowing what we know about scoring in today's NBA, Kobe still classifies as one of the best players of all-time. While it's too easy to try to make comparisons and the like in this post-Jordan era, there are very few players that have displayed the winning intangibles that Kobe Bryant possesses. Heck, just look at what he's accomplishing this year, despite a torn ligament in his shooting wrist and his seemingly "advancing" age. I simply can't think of many professional athletes that's as dedicated to his/her craft as this guy, period.
There are a lot of things you can 'pretty-up' these days, but I think we can all be fair in saying that Kobe has entered a pretty elite class of players. Reaching 5th all-time in scoring doesn't really tell us anymore about the guy than what we already knew all of these years, to be honest. :P
In any case, congrats to the Black Mamba!
Yes. Kobe is great. Best of this era (last 5-10 years). I just think people are very quick to jump on the 'now'. I also think people put too much emphasis on pts (Malone is not as good as his point totals show for exmaple)rawsavon
Once again, I agree with what you're saying. Sports fans, just like most parts of society (gaming included) are oftentimes victims of the moment at hand. Still, given Kobe's entire resume, not to mention the fact that his first 2-3 years in the league weren't exactly show-stopping, I think Kobe deserves props for this. There was one point where it seemed like everyone was touted as "the next Jordan," and while I won't say anyone has become that, Kobe has clearly stood out from a lot of his peers. And with two titles without Shaq now under his belt, that argument can't even be thrown at the guy anymore, either.
As far as the Mailman is concerned, I wouldn't go as far to say that he wasn't as good as his points suggest, but that's just my brief take on it at the moment.

Uh no, Duncan is the best player in the Kobe era.

care to back that one up with some sort of statistical evidence (longevity, pts, championships, great players played with, etc) ...this coming from someone that greatly dislikes LA and Kobe and roots for all TX teams[QUOTE="rawsavon"]Yes. Nop, that would be Shaq.Shaq doesn't hold a candle, unless you're talking about the one player who least lived up to his potential. Dude left AT LEAST 3 more rings on the board by being lazy and out of shape and injured.-Halftime-But that ain't the question.

He failed to live up to potential that he obviously had. He left rings on the board. That's a red flag IMO. Him being in shape a couple of those years might have made a big difference.

I'm a known and professed "Shaq Hater" so take this with that in mind, but I too take points away from Shaq due to his lack of work ethic, laziness, clowning, ...etc. I think he didn't live up to his full potential either, and he could have had he wanted it more.
Also his competition at center, especially during those 3 rings, was pretty poor. Yeah he put up monster numbers but Rik Smits was probaly his best competion at center during the Laker finals, which aint saying much. 3 finals MVP's Shaq ? I probably could have gotten one of those myself ! Maybe that's unfair because ultimately you play whoever is in front of you, but to me Shaq isn't as good as he thinks he is. Did I mention I don't like Shaq?!

shaqs toe ended his career ..it first happened right before the 2003 season..
its not his fault... him being lazy was just him trying to be badass when in reality he knew his career was in deep trouble.

I like Shaq, I appreciate everything he did for the Lakers, it's just I think he had a lot more potential then he ever showed, just by being not willing to put in the work. As a Laker fan, I love him for the 3 titles, but I have resentment towards him cus I think he left a few on the table here in LA because of his conditioning. Please Log In to post.
