After one year of rebuilding the final part will be taken care of in the offseason.

Patriots Free Agents

Kevin Faulk 33
Ben Watson 28
Logan Mankins 27
Steve Neal 32
Jarvis Green 30
Vince Wilfork 27
Derrick Burgess 31
Pierre Woods 27
Gary Guyton 23
Leigh Bodden 27
Ray Ventrone 26
Steve Gotskowski 25

The key guys to keep are Faulk, Watson, Mankins, Neal, and Wilfork

The guys at the right prices are Woods and Bodden, everyone else is up for grabs including the kicker (though after the playoff performance I don't think he'll be asking for top dollar)

Here's the draft picks for 2010

1 first rounder
3 second rounders
1 fourth rounder
1 sixth rounder
2 seventh rounders

They also have 2 first round picks for the 2011 draft that they can use for deals

Overall I don't think anyone should thinking that the Pats are going to drop out of the top teams in the league

You want them to keep a 33-year-old backup runningback?

Yes, few others are as clutch as he is

I think only Troy Brown was more clutch as a Patriot and that's debatable

Keeping Faulk gives you someone who can return punts, rush, and catch balls out of the backfield

If he was an every day/every play guy then no, he'd be a poor choice but in that offense he plays a very vital role and is someone you can trust. Maybe in time someone comes in and replaces him but in the last 4 years he's missed 3 games, rushed for over 5 yards a carry and caught 195 passes out of the backfield.

I can agree with you on him being an all time patriot and most likely seeing his jersey in the Patriot hall of fame one day, but this year he was no where near the impact player he has been in the past. In the beginning of the year he was doing his thing, but as the year went on he was almost non exsistent.

It looks like the Patriots wont be the Patriots next season, maybe the Jets will take over the AFC East.

My "top teams in the league" list mostly just are the four teams who make their conference champ games. So by my estimation the pats are just a good team now. Having said that NFL off season predictions / planning... even teams with the best track records eventually have those "hey they picked up some great guys" and then stink.

keep in mind they probably wont have wes welker till very late into NEXT season

i dont expect adalius thomas to stay, which is going to be another hole to fill.

they have a lot of work to this this off season. they have to address that pass rush, and linebacker core (tully banta cain was their best linebacker :|)

and even the offense. they need a better running back whos going to be dependable/reliable, the ONE season maroney stays healthy, he finds a way to fumble the ball in key situations. There going to need another receiver because i dont see moss having much of an impact anymore, hes a threat yes, but you never know when hes going to play.

thats not even looking at the free agents

as for the draft....a lot of people like to point out how smart they are and how they always find ways to get a bunch of picks in the late round, but in reality they really haven't drafted a player that actually stayed on the team and made an impact, outside of a selective few. the pats make the draft so miserable to watch

*sigh*

and thats just the players!

even the coaching staff had its issues, the play calling this years was mind boggling

the pats are either too young in key spots or too old...its terrible

Actually it's exactly the opposite for Faulk

He's coming off a year where he has the highest 1st down conversion percentage in his career and in Welker's absence in the playoff game pulled in 6 receptions and had the most number of carries in 6 years.

Add in that for the season he averaged 24 yards a return on kickoffs and over 8 yards per pass reception it's clear he's an important part

Also you need to go back 5 years for the last time he fumbled rushing the ball

Tully (one of the best names in the NFL) was their best LB because Mayo's surgery takes a year to come back, he'll have that extra gear by the time training camp starts

All 4 backs not named Faulk are up in 2011 so I expect someone to be drafted

The pass rush is tricky, I don't know where they go for that, probably FA

I see Moss playing well in his contract year next season and Edleman is no Welker but he's a good player. They need to grab one of the FA WR's in the offseason because Sam Aiken starting was a joke, he's a special teamer and that's where his skills end.

I think the rookies played well this season for the most part, there were a lot of players put in unfamiliar roles and they did well enough to get into the playoffs. I trust this year's crop also because Edleman was a projected slot WR by them last season, they can find guys that will add to their team.

I'm not that worried at all, most of the pieces are still there

Ummm, how were they overrated?

They're in the middle of rebuilding and no one has said anything about them all season long without mentioning all the players that they lost in the last year

Also "so called" by that you mean dynasty right? Because that's what they had, there's nothing "so called" about it

Though I will agree with your last two statements, I believe they were overrated this year, because people still touted them as a good team, when in reality they really weren't a good team at all. Everyone thought when the Saints beat them that this was some kind of grand achievement, when really once again the Pats weren't a good team. They were inconsistent, they never won against a quality team, they could never win on the road, their offense was pathetic in the2nd half of games, their D though, gotta give them credit for what they were able to do with the young talent, were inconsistent, and their Owas terrible in the redzone. Also their running game was banged up and also sucked in the redzone. Yet throughout the year there were still prominent analysts believing this team was a top contender. When in my mind they weren't even a playoff team.
