I have been severly disappointed by this gen's football...I use to love the competition from EA and 2k back in the PS2 era. Since then EA hasn't delivered the brand of football I use to enjoy and all of it's holes and exploits where shown when online competition became relevant. I stuck with All Pro Football 2k8 since 2007 and appreciated their approach to football. It was almost as if you were a gm/coach getting talent and crafting a system offensively and defensively. The gameplay was smoother and gave me the chess match approach real student of the games feel. Madden was good this gen but it's built for the casual fan who doesn't know too much about football, there's too many exploits someone could abuse and not enough checks and balances in the gm to make it sim IMO. However with the PS4 I have a slim glimmer of hope that there can be NFL games that are good and companies willing to take a chance on crafting a different football experience as All Pro did for me.

Before the rise of this Gen we had games like NFL Fever, 2k, Madden and others. Gms this Gen like All Pro and backbreaker did little to entice except for having excellent gameplay and animations. I feel like football gaming is on a crossroads...does a football game really need the NFL banner if it's well done and plays well and allows customization options (Stadiums, Logos, Uniforms, Playbooks, Play Structures, etc)? I'm just curious if this can happen next gen, I know there is a slim chance of such things happening given production cost and targeting market & marks but a man can dream.

does a football game really need the NFL bannerEncognito_Mr_BC
This generation (and the end of last gen) proved that the answer to this is 100% yes. Developers tried all sorts of approaches - Blitz the League had a really gritty feel, All-Pro had legends, Backbreaker had "realistic" physics and extensive customization. None of them sold well enough to be long-running series or even close to a Madden competitor. People just won't buy NFL games in today's world without the NFL license.

I feel like if a game that doesn't carry the NFL banner and it's football needs to lower it target mark. A lot of people on madden know who Tom Brady is but can't tell you the fundamental purpose of a cover 2 and cover 4 zone. I feel that's the problem with games in general rather than making a good quota to hit they compare to the other companies budget and success.

Cheesy animations totally kill the games for me.  They need to fix the animations and the jerky motions.

I agree animation for football this gen was not as good as one could hope for. Madden seem to move too cartoony for my taste to take the game serious, All-Pro was fluid but the animations were canned and can get old (although I love how 2k mastered the animations of route running) and backbreaker was damn good but there was no substance. I'm hoping to the heavens we can get somewhat realistic animations with good physics that isn't over done (Madden 13).

My biggest complaints: suction cup tackles/blocks and horrid blocking AI. I'm tired of my RB not being able to hit the hole with any authority because the MLB teleports across to make the tackle, when in real life the RB would have blown past him. And it's impossible to run tosses/power/counters in Maddem because the pulling lineman almost never blocks the correct man.

Fix the physics engine. Backbreaker's engine was too powerful, running anywhere inside the tackles resulted in your RB tripping on the OL's feet or hitting one of their backs and falling flat on his ass. Madden's new physics engine is just way too wacky, really needs some refining.

I also want an Arena Football/Canadian football game. The AFL game on the Xbox is one of my favorites.

And who would buy that? Unless you are talking like an arcade xbox live agme.

Would be cool if Madden bought the license for CFL, and make it to where you can play with those teams. I remember they used to have that with the Europe teams in the old Maddens.

Nobody would buy it. I wasn't saying it was realistic, just something I would love.

Thanks. It's was a damn shame that the Kingdome astroturf ruined his knee in year two. He was never the same player, who knows what he could have done in the NFL.

Yeah... The PS2 games were definitely better than the PS3 games, though I still play Madden 12. I liked the first career mode the best since you had an apartment and emails. They should bring that back. They should also bring back team helmets in pro bowl. How they had it on PS2 but couldn't manage to put them on a more powerful system like PS3 is beyond me.

PS4 will be day 1 if Madden 14 is superb. Or NBA 2K14

PS4 comes out after Madden 14, so I doubt it will be on PS4. Not sure about NBA 2k14, however...

Usually the first sports games on next-gen consoles aren't that good. I remember the first Madden for 360 being terrible even by Madden standards because it was so barebones.

Madden 2001 for PS2 came out after the PS1/N64 version. The 360 launched with a Madden.

Meh... Anyway, hopefully it'll be better than 13. Madden 13 is the reason Madden is no longer a day 1 buy for me. :(

I mean at the end of the day what are you really expecting to get out of sports games? I mean honestly how much far can they really go in making it a simulation. Its football. They can change the views possibly? Upgrade the graphics, but I mean at the end of the day what do people expect? What they should do is bring back Mutant League sports, those were the best.

For Madden, they really need to improve the AI for both players and opposing playcalling. It's a joke that an opposing team will call run plays when they're losing by 14 points in the fourth quarter, or routinely sell out on a blitz when I have 5 wide and it's clearly a pass that I can check-down on. The new physics engine in '13 is great, by far the best improvement to the game they've made in a while, but more has to be done to make the flow of the game itself more realistic.

Only as an XBLA/PSN game. I don't want a full $60 Mutant League Football game that uses the same engine Madden uses.

Really, if Madden cleared up the year one quirkiness of the Infinity engine, and improved AI run/pass blocking, I would be content.

Anyway, since it hasn't been brought up, this year's Madden will be called Madden NFL 25 since it's the 25th anniversary. There could be a legend on the cover this year. Not sure if I want it, however, since last year's was disappointing.

lol they are going to curse the legends too huh? I agree with smooth gameplay and improved DL and OLine play. I wish there were some reward and timing with the running gm. It feels like vision isn't even a factor in Madden, just how good are you with the sticks when you run the ball. I think 2k was best at this aspect of football

Stop generalizing. Madden 13 was disappointing for you. To everyone else, it's the biggest step Madden has taken in the right direction in years.

I wouldn't hate it so much if certain features weren't taken out. It was as bad as the first Smackdown! game was on PS2.

Yeah, but I felt a lot was missing. Like in Madden NFL 13. However, THQ at least had an excuse (new system). EA Sports didn't have one.
