Bounty program

Penalty could be worst than Spygate.

Why do teams try stuff like Spygate or Bountygate? Maybe this could have worked 30 years ago. But in this day and age, it is nearly impossible to get away with anything.

For those that don't remember the Spygate penalty:

  • Bill Belichick fined $500,000 (largest ever for a coach)
  • Patriots fined $250,000
  • Patriots lost their 1st round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Jonathan Vilma put up 10,000 dollars for the player who knocks Favre out of the NFC Championship game. This is going to get really ugly, really quickly.

Exactly. This is the last type of scandal you want on your hands with Goodell as commish to, as player safety is perhaps is biggest hallmark.

You're kidding yourself if you think the Packers haven't targeted a team's best player with the intent to hurt him.

Are they being accused of having such bounties? Nope. Until they're accused of paying bounties for hurting players, it's just football. Hard hits happen all the time.

I understand that this is football, but it's more than a little dirtbagish to reward players for sending someone to the cart.

Other teams have now been accused of have such bounties. Dungy said today that the Titans had one on Peyton, and 4 former Redskins said they had such a thing when Williams was their DC. Whether the NFL investigates that though, who knows. So I don't think the Saints are the dirtiest. But this is awful. Dungy: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/02/dungy-titans-had-a-bounty-on-peyton-manning/ Redskins: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/washington-redskins-offered-bounties-for-big-hits-under-former-assistant-coach-gregg-williams/2012/03/02/gIQAH0RlnR_story.html This thing seems to follow Williams around. It will be...idk, interesting(?) to see what happens with him back with Fisher in STL.

The players were being incentivised (is that a word?) to do what they should already be doing. Laying out hard hits. The Saints are going to be the example, but every team does this. Don't be delusional now. Which one your teams was it that got destroyed by the Saints this season? Lmao.

Ok so the Redskins and MAYBE the Titans.

And every team did the same things as the Pats did with Spygate according to many Pats fan, and even if that is true, which it obviously isn't, does not mean the actions are defendable.

With today's "Keep the offense safe *** the defense" deal this will be worse than Spygate even though it shouldn't be.

You're right. It's worse. And the Saints will be punished worse according to what I hear. How is putting a camera in an illegal place comparable to raising money so players could be rewarded for taking other players out of game? I like a hard hitting football. but it can be hard hitting without bounties. Just like Spygate, this has no place in the league.

I think people claiming the well the Titans had this" the Redskins had this, a few players on this team have said this, are missing the most important part of this story. That a defensive coordinator was directly involved in this situation and that the head coach and GM turned a blind eye. Until it comes out that, that had been the case in other organizations this is far worse.

Yeah this is bad man. It's not the show Spartacus trying to kill people... it's just Football!!! There were guys putting up 10 grand to anyone who could injure a certain player. That's not what sports are about. It's shocking these guys wouldn't have more respect for another guys livelihood. And trust me... we don't want to watch the NFL with half the leagues QB's out for the year. We got a sampling of it this year and it was pretty ugly. Colts, Bears, Texans etc...

It also made me start to think back to games where guys got layed out who weren't even involved in the play really. The perfect situation for this 'Bounty' type BS is after an Interception.... where I can remember games where Eli Manning got blind sided and drilled and was nowhere near the player with the ball.... or seeing WR's and RB's getting nailed 20 yards away from the play when they didn't see it coming. They really need to look into a new rule where after an INT the QB is not 'Fair Game' if he's not near the ball carrier. It's like open season to really injure a skill player during this kind of play and they need to tweak that rule somehow.

I have a feeling there will be some heavy penalties levied here with draft picks being lost to send a clear message to teams that the NFL will not stand for these type things. Losing draft picks will be sure to get teams attention on this 'Bounty' matter and force them to make sure there's no nonsense like this going on with their team.

This is the kind of play the NFL needs to tweak the rules for after an INT. You can't allow the Defense to just tee off on QB's.

What's funny about the Ponder one with Lions coach Jim Schwartz crying.... is if the fragile Stafford ever got hit (and probably hurt) he'd go ape S' over it.

Also I think giving your players incentive to try and put an opposing player out is just as "heinous" (as you say it) if not worse.

I think Saints are going to have 3 times the harsher penalties that Patriots were given for Spygate. Yes it's a physical sport but they are trying to intentionality injure people possibly even ending their careers. Worst part about is that their coach knew about it and did nothing.

Like Brett Favre said when asked about this, "it's football."

But of course with our PoS Commish they'll be fined hardcore.

If a professional player needs a bounty to motivate them to make a hit, maybe they shouldn't be a professional player after all? All these programs do is incentivise cheap shots.

That's just a bit of a slippery slope though, isn't it? There are plenty of "clean" plays (the aforementioned shots at QBs after INTs, borderline late hits, "accidental" contact) that are more than capable of seriously injuring a player.

And if it really was just for clean hits, isn't that what they're getting paid for in the first place?

It sure is. Even professionals who are already rich can use more incentives as it turns out. I know that is stupid, but not a big deal to me.

The only issue here is the idea that the players got paid extra for it. The system should not be in place. It just looks bad.

But this type of mentality is not new, nor only a thing that only Greg Williams led defenses practice. No way. Rivalry games always give you the idea that someone is specifically being targeted. And defenses take any chance they can to lay out the QB. The only arguable point here is that sure the Saints took some major cheap shots on Favre in that 09 championship game.
