I presonally dont enjoy hockey much, but i love seeing BBall. It has to do with scoring. Hockey has 10 goals MAX usually a game and thata very high scoring game. I like seeing my team score, and in basketball you see them score many many times a gameJust_Osmo
then why do you like football??? the ball only gets into the endzone maybe 5-7 times a game, and maybe 2 or 3 field goals too (im nottrying to start a war im just making a point. I love football probably just as much as you do)
but on topic here, this NHL playoffs has been SPECTACULAR. 20 times better than last year. And whoever didnt watch the Stars vs Sharks game last night missed out. Teriffic game!
Specifically, "In the NHL, teams get one timeout. Period. In the NBA, there are 21 timeouts in the final two minutes of every close game." cell_dweller
I do love playoff Hockey but that's not a great argument right there. Teams have line shifts *constantly* in hockey, sometimes multiple times in under a minute, and that usually means dumping the puck and slowing the game down or an intentional icing to stop the clock. And there are not 21 time outs in the final two minutes of a close basketball game, there's fouls committed to try and give the losing team the max number of possessions to come back at the expense of free throws for the opponent.

Uh, teams cant intentionally ice the puck for line changes. When icing occurs, you can not change players. And dumping does occur, but it doesnt even compare to basketball in which you need to stop the clock to change. And the fact that there are so many fouls and stoppages in the final 2 minutes is exactly what turns so many fans off. While I like basketball more, I think hockey can be both more exciting and boring at the same time. You can watch an entire game w/o your team scoring a single goal, but it is more exciting b/c even if the other team is dominating, you can still sneak in a goal and it's a whole new ballgame.
How bout them Stars!
NHL Playoffs are much more exciting than the NBA-The_Chris-
I second that. I used to love playing Basketball and still do in some way but I'm absolutely not interested in the NBA. On the other hand watching hockey is exciting from the beginning until the end so you kinda know my opinion about both sports' playoff seasons.
I generally prefer Canadian sports (for the most popular ones) but even thought Basketball is Canadian and same for Hockey, there's nothing compared to the FIFA world cup :D.

Football is like a game of chess. I like watching how each team lines up and watching what happens each time. Hockey and Soccer are constantly moving around and it is hard to tell if they are even running plays. Plus in football you have hard hits every play, sure hockey has checks but they arent as impresive as a truly hard football hit.
[QUOTE="rudy23451"]NHL is by far better than the NBA. Even though my beloved Devils were knocked out, I still watch the playoffs for hockey. I am yet to watch a full quarter of an NBA playoff gamekozzy1234

I like watching football too, but the hits are often as vicious in hockey as they are in football. Watch a hockey hits compilation on youtube people get absolutely run over.

I Agree, but in Hockey real good hits arent as common. Plus its just 1 guy hitting 1 guy. In football you watch everyone line up and on the snap everyone hits each other, and then the tackle hits can be epic. Compare any compilation of epic hockey hits to epic football hits and its obvious which sport has the best contact.

Basketball is CRAZY popular in Europe now. Why do you think all the white NBA players have such heavy accents?

Yes but hockey has been popular in Europe for much longer. While the NBA is getting an influx of players from Europe over the past ten years, the NHL has been importing Europeans for about twice that amount of time.

True, but the Countries that Hockey is popular in mainly is the few cold countries (IE: Russia, Finland, Norway) Basketball is more widespread through all of europe. IMO. I dont know much about what im talking about so correct me if im wrong. But thats what I thoguthwas true.
Plus Hockey has lost its popularity over the years and basketball has only gained it.

Not quite, hockey has leagues is almost every large European country. Sure Russia, Finland and the Czech Republic are the big ones, but there are teams in the UK, there is a German and an Italian league... heck there are even leagues in Japan.
Basketball is played everywhere (it's one of those games where a ball and any type of makeshift hoop will do) but really outside of the Spanish and Italian leagues, there really isn't a place for players to go. When the lockout happened in the NHL many players went to Europe to play, heck Jaromir Jagr is supposedly in talks for a long term deal to leave the US and play in Russia.
Hockey has only lost popluarity in the US. It is still a major player in Europe and Canada. And Basketball doesn't have the major following that hockey does in the smaller countires in Europe. I mean Khazakstan was in the olympics for hockey... think about that when you look at the teams in the summer olympic basketball games.
NBA Playoffs >>>>>> NHL PLayoffs
Going a whole game with no goals sucks.
Been to jsut as many hockey games live as i have NBA games and the NBA ones are way more exciting.
kozzy1234
that happened ONCE...this entire playoffs so far. Only ONE game was 1-0

I'm not the guy to argue your points. I know diddly squat about hockey. So i'll just agree :-)

i highly doubt that hockey is more popular than basketball internationally. They have Euroleague basketball, which is huge - pretty much europe's equivalent of the NBA, players get paid a lot of money there too and a bunch of NBA players elect to play there as opposed to playing limited minutes in the NBA. And also keep in mind that basketball is now pretty big in asia, mostly china. Canada's all for hockey but that's a very small population, and i guess some parts of europe but basketball has america, europe and asia now

Alright, here. :)
http://www.eurohockey.net/
That follows all of the european leagues and includes most of the major tournaments. I'm not saying that basketball isn't popular, but Euroleague is tiny compared to European Hockey. Almost every country in Europe has a team... and some of the Asian countries have teams in the European Hockey league. There are 24 teams in Euroleague basketball, average of 12 - 14 players on a team. There are 46 countries in European Hockey, with 26 - 30 players on a team.
There are Senior leagues, Under 20, Under 18 and womens leagues of hockey. There are more womens teams in international hockey than there are teams in Euroleague Basketball.
Hockey has been around, and dominant, in Europe for years. That's why the Miracle on Ice was so big, beating a European team was unheard of back in the days of the Russian Red Army.
Again, I'm not saying basketball isn't big, I'm saying that in Europe, hockey is bigger. And again, we're talking internationally, not locally. As much as it pains me to admit it, basketball is bigger in the US right now.
i highly doubt that hockey is more popular than basketball internationally. silky_smooth8I'll let the nationality's of the leaders in the playoff's this year speak for themselves: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Stanley_Cup_Playoffs#Statistical_leaders

What does that have to do with how popular a sport is internationally?
Plus I only count 4 countries there. I'm sure if you look at the NBA there are more countries with great players playing then 4....

I'm not sure if it's true, but Islanders Owner, Charles Wang, says that there's 77k+ ice hockey players over in China. That's still probably less in comparison to basketball players in China, but that's a helluva lot more hockey players than I ever would have imagined. The sport is expanding over there too. China just hosted the Woman's IIHF Championships, and the San Jose Sharks sent over some minor league players and coaches to the China Sharks team earlier this season.
