On PTI today, Tony Kornheiser mentioned how a well known and respected sports writer said that Kobe is playing like Jordan when he was with the Wizards. Barkley was on as well, and he said that Kobe is getting old, isn't as explosive, and is pump faking too much like an aging NBA player.

Now, Kobe is only 31, but is he really playing like a 40 year old NBA star? I mean, Jordan was still schooling everybody, young and old until he was 36! And once he came to the Wizards was when his skills were stagnating and playing like an old man.

I know Kobe is banged up and since he came straight out of high school, he has the legs of a 36 year old even though he's 31, which is what everyone says. But is it really fair? Kobe has two jacked up fingers, a bad ankle, and other injuries which could be the reason why he's slumping a bit.

But is the sports writer kind of right? Is Kobe playing like an old man, like how Jordan played when he was with the Wizards?

How many years do you think Kobe has left?

He's been playing for a long time. Age isn't as big a factor as years in the league is. You could also contribute his injuries to his age. Of course the writer is somewhat right. Kobe is older; he can't get past Durant at will. He's shooting more jumpers. It's obvious. There's still something left, but he isn't what he used to be. How many years? Tough to say. He has more heart than ability at this point. He's definitely going to play past his years. Kinda like Jerry Rice bouncing around the NFL. Not that he'll play for other teams, but he's gonna go longer than he should.

It's a poor comparision imo. Kobe still has waaaaay more lift in his legs nowthan Jordan did with the Wiz. While injuries are there and slowing him downalong with age , he can still make athletic plays pretty consistently.

You hit it right on target. People are making too big a deal over it. Of course players will struggle when they have some injuries especially with their shooting hand.

Michael Jordan pump-faked and took more jumpshots on the Wizards because he was old? Thats ridiculous. By the time he was with the Wizards he had prefected his game to the point where he didnt need to always attack the rim. Why do you think he's considered the best ever?

Don't know what is hard to understand? Kobe is in a decline. He is old and it shows. Am I saying he can't get 40 tonight? No. The fact is that he isn't the best anymore.

Please, you think that if Wiz Jordan could drive AND make jumpshots he wouldn't do it? The fact is that by the time with the Wizards Jordan had perfected his OLD man game. He didn't "always attack the rim" because he "didn't need" it, but because he couldn't do it.

yeah I noticed it in last years playoffs even though Kobe performed well you could just tell he doesn't have the hop in his step like he used to. I was also reading an article where it said Kobe at age 31 has played more games then MJ did when he retired. Even with all this said Kobe is still a top 3 player in the league. I expect him to silence the critics in tonights game

Word. There's no doubt that Kobe has tired legs, long career, always playing deep in the postseason, stuff like that. But I do believe the injuries are playing a big part. His shot hasn't been rights since the broken finger, and the knee is slowing down his explosiveness. Kobe still has a lot of elitel basketball left in him. I'm more worried about that godamn balky knee and that finger than age for Kobe. If Kobe takes time off this summer after the playoffs to fix the finger, skip the Olympic qualifier and just rest his body, I think he could have an MVP type season next year. All the basketball over the last 3 years, with the finals trips and the olympics is taking a toll on him physically.

You know I don't understand why people keep doing this. Jordan is Jordan, end of story. Kobe is not Jordan, Lebron is not Jordan, enough is enough. Kobe is Kobe, HOF no doubt. Lebron remains to be unseen as he is still young and at the beginning of his career. Both players will never be Jordan because Jordan was a fasinating player because of what he accomplished, end of story. Kobe is a fasinating player as well, but he is Kobe. It just gets to a point where comparing these guys just gets old. Kobe is going to age differently then Jordan as will Lebron. I don't know people continue to put Jordan in the same sentence as Kobe, or Lebron.

Nope.

Lebron, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo are all better right now.

It's just the injuries. Jordan was 34 y/o back in 97' and he was still clowning a lot of big defenders. Guys that say kobe is old is just dumb. The dude is 31. That's Jordan's age when he was playing baseball back in 94. He just change his style of play because they have Gasol and Bynum, Odom, Artest. So playing like he was #8 back in the days is non-sense. He have teammates now, and he's out there not to win the MVP but to get the ring. If you can't get that then you might be new to basketball

Bingo...For the idiots who think otherwise, BEFORE the injuries, THIS season he was the leading scorer in the league and playing just fine...That was this season..

He breaks his finger on his shootin hand and gets some ankle and knee injuries now people are saying he's on a decline? Old? MJ on the Wizards?

He averaged 27-5-5 through all those injuries...You guys serious? He had 6 game winners this season....

He just averaged 30 a game in the finals and playoffs just last year...

What are some of you guys smoking? He's played the MOST basketball out of ANY NBA player in the last 3 years.

Fiba championship games, 08 olympics, and2 straight trip to the finals which means playing till JUNE, he just needs a rest and surgery on his finger and he will be fine.

Funny all those injuries and dude still averages almost 30 a game, not to mention he shut down Westbrook today whose about 12 years younger than him.

No need for insults. He is either peaking, in his prime(Which means THIS version of Kobe is the BEST HE EVER WAS) or he is in a decline. I say his best days are behind him.

I agree and why are people so hung up on whether Jordan broke down earlier then Kobe. Who cares?

OOhhhhh, you evoked the great #45! Nice one. Nah he's not old yet but he's getting there. Keep in mind that Kobe's game is more skill based than athletic based so even if he loses a step he will still be good.

Wait what? maybe i'll give you Lebron (maybe) and Dwayne, but Carmelo and Durant? really? Durant while great he still lacks in experience, and Carmelo, well, unlike Kobe he has to learn to control his fouls, he is getting in a lot of problems for that, IMO there is still no better closer than Kobe, if i have to choose a guy to make the last shot on a game, no doubt i will give the ball to Kobe.

I say give Kobe a break, and next season he will be an even better player.

I recall the injury from around the same time as Pau acqusition a game against the nets, when they still had Kidd. He got clipped on the finger thus the injury, if anything prior to that than I dont know, please inform me if any of you know otherwise before that. Ahh, he should had done the surgery right after the olympics, the team was good enough to hold their own, until he came back, but that was just me and now we see him regress from that little issue.

No just no. I dont think its because of his age but because of his injury. Despite his age, he still manages to kick arse.

Kobe needs to shut down and rest his body for the ENTIRE off-season, that way he can let his sore knee and fractured finger heal properly.

Hes not playing 100%, thats why he looks like hes playing/looking much older than he is.

However, I'm not going to deny the fact that he definitely is slowing down a bit.

Gosh he is injury prone. How can he possible play with HIS FRIGGIN HURT FINGER. Are you serious man. His finger makes his injury prone. Bold statement. The sportswriter who made those comments should be fired. What an idiotic comment. Kobe has made 6 GAME WINNERS this year. He isn't declining, he's maturing. He's realized stats don't mean anything, he wants that title. Jordan was a shell of his former self with the Wizard, these past 2 years have been the best of Kobe IMO. And no im not a Laker homer, im a Mavericks fan but I realize how good Kobe is, and anyone that thinks differently doesnt know a thing about basketball.

just look @ Grant Hill (for the young dudes who don't know him, he was the back in the day next Michael Jordan). dude is 37 y/o playing like he is on his 20's. And then youre gonna say kobe is gettin old? He is 31. Dummies!

I'll say this for the umpteenth time. It has NOTHING to do with actual age, it has to do with years in the league and more importantly total games played. Grant Hill came into the league at 22, kobe was 18. Grant Hill has played 868 games in his career, Kobe has played 1021 games in his career and that's NOT COUNTING PLAYOFFS, and we all know Kobe lives in the playoffs, Grant Hill's teams aren't ever there and if they are they aren't there long. And one final point about Hill is that he had a 3 year period where he played 47 games TOTAL due to injury to his ankle. As bad as the injury to his ankle was, it provided rest to the rest of his body which is why he is still playing at a high level now. If you look just at age, and don't factor in anything else i said and think Kobe will still be an elite player at 37 YOU ALL ARE NUTS. Hell he'll be retired by 37 in my opinion

If he was healthy he wouldn't have any problems doing what he wants on the offensive end. But the injuries are slowing him down which is to be expected. That and its the end of the year/season so your already going to be tired anyways.

No way to reason with them sixringz1, now their arguing that today Grant Hill is playing like in his youth. Patience is a virtue with this guys.

Maybe Kobe should take some time off like Jordan did. Think about how much he's played in the past couple of years. Made it to the finals in 08, played in the Olympics after that, Finals 09 and now playoffs 2010. That's a lot of ball. Jordan, Finals in 91, 92, Olympics 92, Finals 93. Then he took that time off to play Baseball. Came back and won 3 more titles. I'm just sayin', if we're comparing the two...

Seeing Grant Hill play makes me glad and sad at the same time. Glad, because he's still playing great and it's good to see him still a starter and successful at his age. Sad because if it wasn't for his injuries, who knows how his career would've ended up like, definitely a hall of fame player with HoF numbers. GH will always be a HoF'er in my eyes. Still one of me favorite players. The blocks he made yesterday against the Blazers were amazing!

I don't think he needs to take a full year off like Michael but after the playoffs this season he definitely needs to just chill out this summer, fix the finger, and rest his body. I think that would make a world of difference. His field goal percentage has steadily declined since the finger injury. It's a shame.
