With the career he had I thought it was deserving of his own thread. I know some people might not like Ray Lewis the person, or how sometimes ESPN really d1ck rode him. But dude was an amazing linebacker even till the very end as far as I'm concerned. I'd personally argue he's been one of the best leaders in the NFL, even over the likes of Manning and Brady.

Dude is, was, and will forever be a legend. Hopefully he doesn't Brett Favre us.

Good LB who got way too much credit for everything because of his persona. But still a good LB.

Well it had to come to an end sometimes, but I loved watching him play and the inspiration he gave to his team. Easily one of my favorite players in the league.

Where do you put Ray Lewis as far as all time defensive great. I say he's top five easily.

Probably wouldn't crack my top five. I wouldn't put him above Deacon Jones, Night Train Lane, Chuck Bednarik, LT or Deion Sanders.

Idk.. Not gonna pretend I was old enough to watch guys like Deacon Jones, Night Train Lane, Chuck Bednarik and LT and know more about them then the regurgitated praises they continuously get. He's one of the best that I've personally got to watch play, or at least he was for a long time until the past 3 or so seasons.

Can't comment on players I didn't see play. of the players I saw play from the 90s forward(I was born 88, so lets just ignore the 80s for me, and count 90s to present football). hmmm

1: Reggie White
2: Primetime
3: Ray Lewis
4: Rod Woodson
5: Lawrence Taylor or Ed Reed

All time though is tough as hell for him to crack top 5 I think. You got Ronnie Lott, you got Deacon Jones, Butkis, Singletary, Night Train Lane, Jack Lambert who I like simply because his name is so badass. I think Ray is top 10, and if I had to argue linebacker position: Lawrence Taylor is the only linebacker who's body of work I hold above what Ray Lewis did.

He's simply amazing. I think you have to rank him amongst the greatest of players of the 2000s. Like at least top 5 of that decade.

He's one of the best that I've personally got to watch play, or at least he was for a long time until the past 3 or so seasons.

Even in the past 3 or so seasons he still made some amazing plays. He wasn't nearly the same player that wowed us all those years ago, but his productivity was still there largely due to the fact that he used his experience to his advantage.

I mean he could still read plays with the best of them. He had just lost a lot of that speed that made him such a sideline to sideline beast. I mean top 5 LBs might have been tough, but I'd say he was still pretty much a top 10 inside linebacker if only for how much he could still impact the game. Even if it had become less Ray's defense, and more Haloti Ngata, and last year T-sizzle.

I think Ed Reed is the same in a lot of ways. He's starting to lose a step, but he's always where he needs to be. His football IQ is covering up a lot of his diminishing abilities.

I'm only 25 so I can only look at it through that prism as I never got to see guys like LT play in their primes. That being said the Baltimore Ravens have made it their identity to be a hardcore defensive unit and Ray Lewis was a major reason they are seen in that light. So He's top fve for me because I on;y have a narrow view of the NFL (last 25 years). Older people will always see their era as the best, so I try to not fight that fight.

Easily one of the best defensive players I've ever seen play. I'd put him in the top 10 defensive players of all time.

Too bad he never won another SB in his prime but it aint his fault.

Ray Lewis is 1 of 2 players to ever win Super Bowl MVP and Defensive Player of the Year Awards (Harvey Martin 1977)

Here's something to bolster the credentials a little bit.

One of the main reasons Ray is retiring is to spend time with his kids, he said. I don't really buy that he is a bad father or anything.

Now I know conversational skills are not your forte, so I'll try to phrase it in terms that even you can understand (a daunting task, indeed).

  • You griped about ESPN's ranking of him.
  • Someone quoted you, pointing out it's just ESPN being ESPN, all the while sticking to the topic of Ray Lewis' ranking.
  • You quoted said person, implying continuation of the aforementioned subject matter.

So yeah, you did.

Unless of course, you're one of those sorts who enjoys sustaining quote strings by randomly changing subjects... but such moronic behavior is characteristic of an addlebrained wanker. I would never suggest such a description could apply to you. No, I hold you in too high of regard to ever attempt anything so petty.

Ray Lewis was one of the first NFL defensive players I came to recognize with great skill when I first began watching football. Always has been a childhood idol, but was an absolute warrior on the field with great skill, especially his endurance.

Ray is easily top 5. If he played in the 70's and 80's he would have been even more dominate. With the constant rules changes to make the game more offensive firindly, along with a massive increase in the skillset of the offensive skill player alot of these great 70's defensive players wouldn't be nearly as effective.

They would spend there entire careers paying fines. Not only was ray domiante, he was dominate within the BS rules the NFL has in place right now.

I can only imagine how dominate an unshackled Ray would have been.

I can somewhat respect that comment because with any High profile celebrity....there either gonna be loved or hated. The point I was trying to make "Genius" was that since "NOBODY" on this forum actually had a personal conversation with the guy who can really say what type of person he is or why anyone with a "LIFE" should care.

My admiration is from what the guy does on the Football field and that is what we do know....love him or hate him!!!:) @JML897

You are absolutely correct...but that's what's wrong with the internet and media in general, we have an abundance of "SO-CALLED" educated people spoon feeding us information!! As I said before I don't give a darn about Ray or "ANY" celebrities person life(isn't it hard enough taking care of your own)...I only care about what they do concerning their craft.:)

I think the concept of murder is going way too far over your heads.

I'm sure Ray who discovered he got a get out of jail free card in real life totally understands how lucky and got and made sure he was a better person for it. Not gonna knock the concept that maybe the Ray now is not the Ray who killed someone. But acting like people aren't allowed to be disgusted a little bit by a guy who basically got away with murder is ridiculous. It's f*cking murder. The whole "well he's a celeb"...that is so not even worthy of a justification. Most celebs do what? Drugs, bad sex videos, and dumb basic sh1t? This got away with murder(allegedly for all you politically correct people). That's a night and day difference.

Fantastic player, but put some actual thought into a counter argument. Unless you're trolling. In which case at least be entertaining about it.

Yep, some people just wish that the "murder thing" was just swept under the rug. But to their chagrin people like us are there to remind them of an inconvenient truth.

Hopefully Ray Ray gets one more Super Bowl appearance. I don't know the details about the murder case, but until someone was actually found guilty i'd like to think they were innocent................................except for OJ  Wouldn't surprise me though if he was another person with a troubled past that clings to religion.
