Huh? Since when does a team not play another team from the other conference? Sure they may not play every team from the other conference, but most sports do that? Heck, baseball only started to do that eleven years ago. Until then no team from the AL played a team from the NL until the World Series.
Name one team from the west that isn't playing any team from the east this year or vice versa. Let me just save you some time, you won't find one.
Plus, isn't the point of the regular season to determine who the best team in the conference is?
The NHL is a terribly run organization, which we can thank Bettman for.
The NHL being on Versus is bad. The NHL putting franchises in odd places and expanding is bad. And this whole "lets put the entire sport on Sidney Crosby's back" is just irritating.

I agree. Trying to expand NHL in Arizona and Florida was a terrible idea. And there's indeed more talented player than just Crosby in the league.
We can thank him for running the NHL straight into the ground. I'm surprised he's lasted this long. The NHL is a terribly run organization, which we can thank Bettman for.

OT Playoff hockey is the most exciting stuff to watch in any sport ever. Period.cell_dweller
agreed! i love any ot hockey! even if its not my team, its still exciting!
Canucks vs Maple leafs, Canucks vs Montreal, Canucks vs Ottawa?? I dont see them playing this season....Huh? Since when does a team not play another team from the other conference? ONE team. You said western teams sometimes don't play an eastern team for years. I think he's saying all West teams play at least one East team this year.
In hockey you can start fighting with someone and the referees will monitor the fighting and the game instantly, literally turns into a boxing match. I just don't understand that. It's the most pathetic gimmick I've ever heard of in sports.manningbowl135
Its seems absurd, but its just part of the sport.

Bingo, you are nitpicking. You said east doesn't play west, that's untrue. And most sports don't play every team in the league. In baseball you play a team once every three years. So if you are a Pirates fan (me) and you are waiting for the Yankees I'm waiting another two years before that will happen again. In football it is once every four years, the Steelers played the NFC West last year, if I want to see Steelers vs Cardinals, Seahawks, 49ers, or Rams... I'm waiting another three years.Like manningbowl and I said, you said east doesn't play west, period. I'm saying they do, just because they aren't playing the teams you want them to play is tough. Where's Mick Jager when I need him...

Actually the fights aren't pointless.

You don't understand the game, then. Fighting is generally about standing up for your teammates or getting your team going. Letting the players police themselves keeps cheap shots low because each player knows they will be held accountable for their actions. You just don't see that in other sports.
As for the Bettman issue: BLAME THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Bettman is an idiot, yes, but he's also mostly just a figurehead.

If punching the other guy in the face is the only way you know to stand up for your teammates, then you're a very intectually limited person.

So you think there's no headhunting in football? Basketball? Hell... soccer? There is a clean way to take care of business and a dirty way. While there are cheap shots in hockey (even more since the lockout, wherein they tightened up the game and restrict more), I'd rather see a player stand toe-to-toe with another than eye gouge in a pile or throw an elbow coming down from a jump shot.

Is it any different than a pitcher hitting a player with a ball in retaliation? Or maybe a hard foul in the NBA? Or what about maybe hittting alittle harder or going helmet to helmet in football?
Maybe your just limited in your knowledge and understanding of the game.

I know... The NHL has Ovechkin, Malkin, Kopitar, Kane, Toews, and so many others that will become phenoms (Well, you could already say the Ovie is one, and Malkin has rised fast.)

Hard foul already exists too in hockey(Bertuzzi anyone?) so no point to add fights over that, the NBA, the NFL and MLB suspends players who fights, why not the NHL? But anyway, everything that is penalized is not supposed to be part of the game right?

Fighting isn't apart of their game though. No matter what though, every sport has retaliation. For hockey its fighting, which also serves to spark a team and light their fire.
And for Bertuzzi, he nearly killed Steve Moore, and had a huge suspension and fine.

Hard foul!?!? Are you kidding me?!?! That was one of the dirtiest and cheapest shots in history of sports. The guy should be in frickin jail. I will never understand why they reinstated him...

Why was the NHL expanding to Arizona and Florida a bad idea? Im a Panthers fan from Miami and i love hockey just like any diehard fan. Just because its not popular over here doesnt mean people dont like it. I wish that one day the whole world will be able to enjoy hockey.

If its not popular thats the point we're making. If your not selling out your arena, why put a team there?
Minnesota made a TON of sense. Putting teams in the Midwest and North makes a lot of sense where Hockey is popular, not in places like Florida, Southern California and Arizona.
The smart thing to do is focus on helping building fan bases for the teams you have, THEN go and expand, but ONLY if the sport is doing well, which it isn't and is suffering.
And on another note. Anyone see what Chris Pronger did? I hate The Ducks and how the Bettman and Campbell treat certain players.
Chris Simon did the same thing and DESERVEDLY got a 30 game suspension. Yet Chris Pronger got off because "he lost his balance." Makes me sick. I hate the Ducks and their dirty play.
All im saying is that enough ppl like it over here to fill up our arena and watch on T.V, its just not as popular as in say, Canada. That doesnt mean a lot of people won't go crazy if we win the Stanley Cup. ppl up north just underrate the fan following hockey has in Florida AND ArizonaThe-Great-One99
Florida has tons of transplants from the North. You ever look at Grampa Bay's attendance? I wouldn't say that the state needs two NHL franchises, but it definitely is not a bad idea to have a team down there. Just because we get to enjoy a 70 degree January doesn't mean we aren't hockey fans.
I really don't understand why hockey "purists" oppose the growth of our sport. It baffles me that they want to keep it to those "deserving" of it. I live in Atlanta and know that if there were accessable rinks to the east, west and south of the city, there would be a much larger interest in hockey. Most people down here have no idea that there are actually rinks around here (a few north of Atl). Admittedly, the team needs to become better (and needs a MUCH better television contract), but marketing to youth is what will rebuild the league. Gaining fans is a long, slow process.

Its not even where it expanded.
It just expanded too fast.
When the sport is doing poorly, WHY would you expand to places like Nashville?
I don't oppose to teams being in Florida and Arizona and Atlanta. I DO have a problem putting teams there when the sport isn't doing well.
