IMO, there's no reason for em.

BCS Championship Games aren't played on paper, Conference Championship Games aren't played on paper, and to think of it, no games are played on paper. So, why even have preseason rankings? Because, preseason rankings are created from paper (hype)stats, and you can't get a feel for a team until you see them play.

But, the real question is...........

In what week should the firstnational rankings come out?

College ball is the only sport I know to institute actual rankings based on what the teams might do. Bass-ackwards yet pre-season rankings are fine by me. Those rankings are a projection...as they are at every other moment in the season. They represent how good the team might be based on past performance. Or so I would assume. Keep in mind these aren't BCS standings..which are a whole other convoluted argument.

BCS is all about paper, but in the NFL they should go away and other sports.

whether or not someone likes the BCS Standings, at least they go off of results rather than off of 'hunches' and 'gut instincts' like the preseason rankings; it has always bothered me that opinions of reporters and coaches determine who starts off number one, lol

BCS Champions are pretty much paper champions, so to me it doesn't matter.

I do not mind preseason ranks, I always like to watch and see how they will live up to them.

If that were true, Utah would've been playing in the championship game last year.

I don't mind the preseason rankings, although I think it would be great to see rankings become available after the first four games.

I agree with this. Until they have a playoff system, college football is just a bunch of really exciting exhibition games.

any sort of rankings are just fun to follow....but they cant take into account the fact that sometimes even the best team has an off day. That's why the games are played and so there should be some kind of playoff system.

Well they certainly help justify teams getting paid to play at certain locations. And they give everyone on the internet something to argue about every year. But yeah I am not really a big fan of them. I just want to see the best 8-12 teams get into a playoff every year and prove once and for all who is the real deal. The only year that i felt okay with two teams getting a shot was Texas vs USC where Vince Young won it for the long horns. I felt like the two best teams were playing, but that still doesn't help that there were other teams that earned a right to at least get a shot at it.

dude, I'm not backing the BCS; i'm simply saying that it goes off of more results than preseason rankings do

Utah got dooped, but being undefeated doesn't impress everyone, lol; i think Utah deserved a shot, but I don't pick the schedules

I don't agree with BCS but I appreciate what it tries to do

but back to the original point, Utah is a perfect example that the preseason rankings are crap; for example, who expected Utah to remain undeafeted throughout the year? definately, not the press or coaches doing the picking
