So football (NFL) isn't football anymore, what is it then?

Ray Lewis was right, Quarterbacks are still men playing the game aren't they? What we got a flash of last week with the Ravens vs. Patriots is becoming a plague on the NFL. Ravens vs. Bengals and Titans vs. Colts and probably other games I've missed.

I realise that the Colts would still have won the game tonight but that 'roughing the passer' call where the Titan defender got pushed into Manning is just more nonsense.

I guess they should just tie ribbons onto QBs where you have to pull it off to stop them and declare it a severe penalty just for touching them even by accident. All the greats that use to play the game must be laughing at the NFL these days...

I'm all for breast cancer awareness but all this pink really symbolizes something else about the state of affairs in the league.

The Ravens game today was legit.

The only play in the Colts game I disagree with was the below the knee call. It's just a stupid rule.

Ray Lewis also doesn't have to stand back and let dudes run at him full steam and hit him while he tries to pass the ball... Also if you hit a dude, even by accident, you still hit them. I don't get that argument at all. Would we then get explanations from the refs "He didn't really mean to do that so it wasn't pass interference even if he tackled the WR in the open field preventing him from catching he ball, 4th down."

nfl has gotten soft in not only protecting the QBs more but in other ways too. they also blow plays dead before a guy is even down by contact, when an opportunity for a strip is still there.

Yes it's much too soft these days. QBs get paid the BIG bucks to play fooball, a mans game. Now ANY remote brush of a players facemask is an automatic 15 yard penalty, even if it's just a light stroke of the hand or fingers.

I hate how they have changed the facemask penalty to an automatic 15 yards. It should be up for interpretation. An accidental finger caught in the facemask shouldn't be the same as someone grabbing a handful and turning a guy's head around.

They actually don't have to throw the flag if the hand grasps the mask now.

The NFL is going soft... they say it's for player safety, but thats bull. The more restictions that the rules put on defenders, the more points offenses score. More points, bigger ratings. They are trying to make games more like college games, but doing it in an artifical way. In college, games are so high scoring because of huge talent differences. The talent is even in the pros, so you have to tip the balance with rule changes.

You got that right. They want to appeal to new viewers more than die-hard fans that understand that defense is a huge part of the game. Guess they should re-name it the National Flash Leage.

But with the recent Tebow injury, do you think they'd seriously consider going the same route as the NFL to protect their marquis players as well?

If the quarterback is hit after releasing the ball, there should be a penalty. It's really that simple. You guys will be complaining about these calls until someone is put in a wheelchair for life, or worse.

I'm all for making the game safer. After all, the number of ex-nfl players who suffer from dementia and/or chronic pain is staggering. However, all of the rule changes favor the offenses. There needs to be some balance.

If you sign an NFL contract, then that is a possibility. They are not gladiators: no one if forcing them to play football. Football is a contact sport, and it is dangerous. If they don't want to play football, then they could play in another sport. Half of them played college basketball/baseball or wrestled or did something and were dominate at that as well. This is professional football, and part of the deal is you might get **** up for the rest of your life. That doesn't mean I don't feel bad for them, or that I want to see something like that happen. it is a terrible tragedy and I would never wish it on anyone. But when things go over board all in the name of "protection"(how can an open hand barely hitting a quarterbacks helemt be dangerous?) then it is going too far.

correction all the greatsare jealous they never received this protection, so they go on rants about how easy players have it today. The rules are important and protection is needed. sports illustrated made a good article on QB protection and one good point was the difference in size and speed.

Non of the old greats had a 6 ' 7 370 pound mario willaims running full speed at them. QBs need protection. The sports being getting dangerous because the caliber of atheletes (speed size and strength) is unparalleled today. Sorry to older people who watched football in the past, but its true.

Obviously the league protects QBs because they bring in sales no one can deny that.

I believe this happened during the Giants, Raiders game during the 1stQ. The ball came out, the play wasnt blown dead, as soon as a Giant defender pick up the ball to run, the play was blown dead. The Giant defender didnt hear it blown dead, neither did the ref waiting by the endzone to greet the defender for a TD. It was later overturned because apparently his knee was down. During the replay, the ball came out before his knee was down, as soon as the Giants defender picked it up, it was blown dead.

 Shannon Sharpe said on NFL Today on CBS that "Every single play he (Tom Brady) drops back to pass, he has five offensive lineman, sometimes a back or sometimes even a tight end, and he has the best blocking line period. That is the National Football League that is protecting him."

When you're as big as those defensive players are, you can't exactly stop on a dime in mid air or even on the ground. That force just can't be stopped instantly.

Deacon Jones says Hi

he was faster than Mario Williams, stronger and would have been the NFL sacks leader if the league recorded sacks at the time he first started playing. The guy was ahead of his time and had the athletic ability of most Defensive Ends today

This was talked about during 60minutes after the game. By the sound of the study and football players who have played for years, i'd say about 70% of players might suffer from this after they retire. Its scary, really. They are currently working on a newer helmet which absorbs the shock more.

No, all the greats are not jealous, they genuinely don't like the rule changes. Especially since they were 'great' without the protection that they garnered. Injuries are part of the game. And while, yes, protecting your QBs are important since they are considered your cash cows, it shouldn't detract from quality of play which, at current, it is.

This exactly. Very rarely do players nail a guy hard more than two or three seconds after the ball is out of his had. It's all a judgement call and the refs' judgement has become overprotective.

Mario Willaims is 370 pounds vs jones who is listed at 272though the video said 260....yea that sure makes deacon stronger. 6"5 272lbs vs 6"7 370 pounds who would you pick as stronger? As for whos faster well I never found Jone's 40 yard time, so if you say hes faster I'd like some proof.

This is one player you mentioned to argue past football players are as good as modern day ones. The fact is the modern day 2000 era nfl players are more likely to hurt quaterbacks simply because thy are, bigger, strongerand more dangerous athletes than the guys of the 70's. I know it angers vets and older football fans to say that, but its true.

Just so you know being bigger in size doesn't make you stronger. In one season Deacon Jones had 26 sacks, lol Mario Williams would never get close to that ;)

As for whos faster well I never found Jone's 40 yard time, so if you say hes faster I'd like some proof

They don't have his 40 time listed but getting to the QB as shown in the video he was just as fast as Mario Williams

again no it's not true at all. DE's and defensive players in the past were far more dirtier and the league didn't protect it's QB's like they do today

It's football for some QB's just not for others. The roughing the passer penalty is going to be geared more towards the league's poster boys, the Mannings, Brady, etc. Newer and less accomplished QB's won't get the same calls.

Also, on a nother note, the Pass Interference calling is starting to get a little insane... Idk where the refs saw any PI on Edwards in the Miami/NY game

the nfl only made that rule because of tom brady if it wasnt him they wouldnt made the rule at all..but i do think the league is becoming soft
