"BOSTON -- When the Red Sox spend the 2012 season commemorating the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, there's a chance there will be a centerpiece event that would have emotions stirring throughout the game.

Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino confirmed on Thursday that the club has already requested to Major League Baseball that Boston have an upcoming All-Star Game at Fenway, preferably in 2012.

"We have made a request to have another All-Star Game at Fenway Park in light of the upcoming 100th anniversary and the changes that have taken place," Lucchino said Thursday during part of a media availability in which the club was announcing Year VIII improvements of Fenway.

MLB has already announced that the 2009 All-Star Game will be in St. Louis and the 2010 Midsummer Classic will be at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

There has yet to be any decision on 2011-2013.

If Lucchino and the Red Sox have their druthers, Fenway will be in the mix.

"That issue is resolved by the Commissioner's Office, above my pay grade," quipped Lucchino.

But unlike the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, this would not be a sendoff for ancient Fenway.

Lucchino feels that the Red Sox will maintain residence at Fenway for years to come.

"I think it's the little engine that could, and it has proven to be that in the last several years in particular," Lucchino said. "We think it can continue to be as long as it is full of passionate Red Sox fans."

Under previous ownership, the Red Sox had planned to build a new Fenway Park. But once the new group led by John W. Henry, Tom Werner and Lucchino took over in February 2002, the priority shifted to renovating the ballpark and making it more modern each year, something the club has been successful in doing.

The All-Star Game was last held at Fenway Park in 1999. "

No way. There are 30 teams. 13 years is too short of a time period for a team to host again.

Selfish? What? It's selfish to think other teams deserve a turn? Kansas City hasn't hosted since 1973, despite having what is universally regarded as one of the most beautiful parks in baseball. Why can't it be their turn to host?

I say that's perfect for it to host at Fenway. As a Sox fan, I'd like to see that.

Yeah and they're even sprucing up KC's park I hear, that's ignoring the new parks.

I think it's selfish for the Red Sox to think they deserve one every 13 years when there are 30 teams in the league.

what so wrong with fenway hosting on its 100th birthday? they did it for tigers. again there only 8 teams that have never hosted it. woo and they still have plenty of time left to do so.

While I believe that their intentions are good, the 100th birthday and all, it shouldn't happen as it's ignoring the rest of the league and their chances to host the All-Star game, which should travel through each park before returning to yours, only to be fair.

Other leauges will get its chance there nothing wrong with saying this i like your diffrent thoughts on this. than all-star game would of never happen in yankee stadium from the start.

if detorit tigers can get all-star game for the 250th birthday i dont see mlb saying no. thats not how it works though

You're missing the major difference between those cities and Boston. The Yankees hadn't hosted since 1977. The Tigers hadn't hosted since 1971. They were already due for a turn, regardless of special occasions. The same can't be said about Boston.

Give them the All Star game.

Go for it, i'd rather have it in one of the classic ballparks than some modern red brick and green steel wannabe Ebbets field travesty. Kudos to renovating instead of destroying it like the Yankees.

KC's ballpark was very nice, but it was over 100 degrees first pitch when I saw them in July last year, that made it a little less pleasant. And I agree, the Red Sox had one 13 years ago.

I think you are missing the point. Despite ESPN's greatest efforts, baseball is supposed to treat each team equally. That means one team doesn't hold a all-star games in close succession when there are other teams that haven't had one for an extended period of time.

I think it's a great idea. Pittsburgh got it in 1994 and 2006, so the gap is not too soon. The NHL gave it to Montreal for their 100th season, the MLB would be wise to do the same for the Sox.

Look guys, it isn't fair, but i think it's ok to make an exception in this one case. How many parks out there can say they made it to 50 let alone 100 YEARS!?!? :? Hell can you imagine a place like the "trop" getting it, oh dear, it was sad to see the WS in that park, hell there are minor league parks that look tidier, classier, real baseball parks.

I say that it is to soon. 100 years is a feat, but come on let us be fair to the other teams. The Twins have not had a All-Star game since 1985 and we are moving into a new park in 2010.

I am happy to say that I have been to Kauffman Stadium. It's awesome and the way the stadium lies so it doesn't really feel elevated is nice. In fact, Kansas City as a whole is pretty great.

The Cubs should get it in 2014 cause they have waited long enough. Boston should have passed on 1999 if they wanted the All-Star game for their 100 year.

I know what you mean but the Red Sox were under different ownership back then. They were pulling for a new park in South Boston and weren't planning on restoring Fenway. So it's not like they had a choice to pass the '99 allstar game for 2012.

They should play in the new parks while they're shiny and new.  Fenway will always be old and just get older.  It can wait.

You had me so angry with this post that i blew up and got moderated with it. This post makes no sense and you shouldnt be alowed to post here anymore. Fenway is one of americas most beloved ballparks and you call it a dump???? that is such a nonsense comment that i dont even know the right words to say,.

Ros has a good point. The Sox couldnt pass up the AS game in 99 because they were thinking of moving.

Fenway Park is a big gimmick. Not only does it have a high wall that makes no sense in baseball, it has an extremely low wall that makes no sense as well. The distance to right field is a joke. Baseball fields should have one wall of equal height all around, like most fields in the MLB.

I agree that Fenway is a dump. So what if it is beloved? The dimensions are just gimmicky and dumb. I hate the Yankees but Yankee Stadium is a nice stadium. Fenway is not.

Yeah, the cookie-cutter fields from the 70s is a trend we're trying to move away from, not towards.

That is what each ball park unique. Just becuas ur bluejays can seldom hit over the monster doesnt mean you have o bash our ballpark. Fenway is one of the most beloved ballparks and it does matter. The monster is a challenge but can be done with some actaul effort.

lol @ your blue jays comment when the jays tend to play just fine against the red sox.

it has nothing to do with the red sox, i just think the ballpark is a gimmick, i can't take it seriously

I'm admittadley biased here, but I think it would be awesome for the Sox to host in 2012. I know a lot of teams haven't hosted one in a while, but how often is it that a park turns 100 years old? I could imagine the MLB strongly considering the request too, because the ratings for the All-Star game would be higher if the game was played at Fenway than in, say, Kansas City. And like a few guys said above, it would also be awesome for Wrigley to host in its 100th.

And in regards to Fenway being called a dump- You guys are just jealous of the park, and you know it. ;)

Fenway is not.

you call the distance of right field a joke in fenway, yet you say Yankee stadium is nice where the purposely brought in left and right field so they could bomb it out of the park mroe easily. You my friend are way to naive. Also don't be upset because you have one of the dullest parks in MLB up there in Toronto. So don't hat on Fenway and its unique design that was made back in 1912, it gives the game of baseball a different dimension when you play there.

I don't understand why you guys are so unreasonable to give one of the most historic parks in history the AS game for its 100th anniversary. The cubs i am sure will get it for their 100th anniversary.

Oh to the guy who called Fenway a dump, you my friend are extremely worng the last thing Fenway is, is a dump!

I've seen videos from inside Wrigley and Fenway and i would say they are dumps, not as bad as Shea though  So it is going to come down to huge renovations or building a new ballpark :? It's up to the fans to decide which i guess..........well not really i think in Detroit a lot of people complained but they still built Comerica and destroyed Tiger Stadium. Not that the park isn't charming, i'd love to have my Dodgers play in a World Series there :) Just saying, you can tell these parks won't cut it for another 25 years so something has to give.

Define dump?????? How the heck is fenway a dump? Back up your stupid comments about the park... seriously this is so disgusting. Fenway is not a dump because i actually know what it looks like from the inside without a freaking video....... I HAVE BEEN TO AN ACTAUAL GAME. I dont watch videos and base my so called "dump" decision on a freaking video! WOW!

There's nothing unreasonable about suggesting the game be divvied out in a fair manner.
