Considering one of the top nominees last year was Barbaro(for getting hurt, I guess?), I don't know why I care about this as much as I do...but this is stupid.

I think Federer was snubbed...again. Also, you can make the case for like 5 QBs who have deserve it more than Favre.

Here's who I would've picked:

1.Roger Federer (He's really freaking dominant, as long as he's not against Nadal on clay)
2.Peyton Manning (He won the Super Bowl this year; he's in ads, SNL, etc -- all over the place)
3.Tom Brady (Obvious reasons; at least he played in the playoffs this calender year, unlike Favre)
4.Tiger Woods (He's Tiger Woods)
5.**HOMER ALERT** Devin Hester **/HOMER ALERT**
6.A-Rod. Yeah, and when was the last time Favre did something in the playoffs?
7.LeBron? Some guy from the Spurs?

The sportsman of the year is such a joke. It's not about the best athlete but the best "story", which really mean nothing. Favre didn't even make the playoffs last year, and he hasn't won a championship in 10 years. No way he deserves this.

By the way, you're a little early on Brady. He'll win it next year, IF the Pats win the 08 Superbowl.

I'd pick Appalachian State ;)

Seriously though I'd compile a list of all the teams with big upsets in NCAA football and name them all sportsmen of the year. It has been a historic year for upsets.

thats actually a really good idea. I think it would be very appropriate for this years crazy turn of events in college football.

So, carrying a team to 10-2 and breaking numerous NFL records (including TD passes) OBVIOUSLY means he's overrated.

Peyton Manning's team is 10-2.
Tony Romo's team is 11-1.
Tom Brady's team is 12-0.

And I really don't think those career stats should matter. This isn't "Sportsman of 1994-2007", it's "Sportsman of 2007".

It's clearly obvious that they have a much better team all around, with more experienced players.

So. Right here in 2007, you're saying Brett Favre is the best QB in the league?

He did just break Marinos TD record and Elways win record, that does give him good reason to win it.

Brady does the whole 16-0 and wins super bowl, thats a guarenteed lock for next years.

No, but he's proven the most with a mediocre team.

Anyways, the award is for "the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement."

Hard to doubt the sportmanship of Favre and the achievements he's made this year.

Hell no. The only award he should get is comeback player of the year. I would have much rather any of the following winning:

1. Tiger Woods: Tiger freakin' Woods. Had another great year, after the passing of his mentor and father. Not a good enough story for you SI?:|

2. Devin Hester: I'm a bit biased as he's my favourite player in the NFL but he's quickly becoming one of the most popular players in the league. Oh, and he's also kinda fourth all-time in kick return TD's in his sophomore season...

3. LeBron James: Singlehandedly led his team to the NBA Finals. Has proven himself to the fans, the media, probably everyone but himself as he keeps pushing himself to get better every year.

Exactly. Nice post. I think everyone in this thread is a little confused at what the award means. Favre deserves it more than all the players / teams everyone has mentioned. EDIT: Most of you are overlooking the fact that he is 38 years old. He almost retired last season. And to come back and have a season like the one he's having is a great achievement.

Once again, since you neglected to read my first post, this is NOT the comeback player of the year award, so that should have no bearing on it.

I did read you first post but that isn't the only reason he deserves it, i was just pointing it out.

Anyway, Brett is a role model to every player out there and is every bit deserving of this award. The other guys will have their year when they'll win, Brady, Federer, Lebron. They're still young, they'll win at some point.

No he isnt. Giving it to Brett over Brady, Federer and Lebron solely because they're younger and will have other chances is stupid.

B. Everyone though Favre was done, yet is completing damn near 70% of his passes with a 2.5TD to 1 Int ratio

C. Again, number of broken records...

and as much as I respect Peyton and Brady and how well tuned they are, they don't play the game with the heart favre does...

I agree wit hthe folks who don't like the idea of Favre as the story here. I'm a bit tired with the media's man crush on Favre as it is. The man is an outstanding QB, no question, and he came back and has done well but the season isn't even over for cripes sake... Time to move on to feel good stories that originate this century....

Yes they do. It just doesn't seem like that b/c they don't play with the same reckless abandon (what Favre used to be). Favre's game was wild, fast and exciting, Manning and Brady's games are a bit more controlled so they don't look like they're playing with as much heart as Favre does. Brady took a paycut to stay with his team. Manning has repeatedly said he doesn't play this game for the money (commercials yes) and has basically made the game his life, I'd say those are on par with Favre's love of the game.

First off, Federer is a Tennis player from Sweden - most of the awards are from an "American" POV (no soccer player has won it).

Anyways, Favre and his wife have ran two charities. This really isn't an awardon who is the best player, which is why everyone doesn't realize why Favre has won it, it's about ACHIEVEMENT. He has the new TD record. That's why, so get over it.

ehh whatever. But his records were all because of longevity. I doubt that in 10, 15, 20 years he'll be considered a top 5 quarterback of all time, id say top 10

Longevity, duh...all greats play a long time. Jerry Rice, John Elway, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, etc all played 10-15 or more years. So don't use the longevity as an excuse...he has 430+ TD's, and 60,000+ yards.

You don't get those numbers in 5 years... hell even payton manning is near or at the 10 year mark now. And hes still 20,000 or sobehind favre and Marino.

how in hell did a horse make the shortlist? that is like awarding the f1 championship to raikonnen's car rather than kimi himself. Race horses are bred to be that way, they didn't all of a sudden decide hey I want to be a racehorse. A more logical shortlist would be to call it breeder of the year. Sometimes people are incredulously idiotic

Why?

One of the best QB's to ever play the game (now holds just about ever major QB record) (Victories, TD's, Completions, etc and next week...Yards)

One of the most exciting to watch

NFL's "Iron Man" (270 straight)

3 Time MVP, 2 Time Player of the year

2 Super Bowl Visits, 1 Super Bowl Victory

Most importantly, he gives hundreds of thousands of dollars ever year to charities, and helps raise similar amounts for other charities, in addtion to his own.

Favre deserved it. He broke some huge records this year. He may not be having the season like Brady, but Favre is still putting out good numbers, and 11-2 isn't anything to laugh at.
