Can the giants beating the Patriots today be considered the greatest upset in NFL history? Hell, is it the biggest in Sports history? I say yes, and Maybe.
OMG what a game! "there must come a time when even gods must die"
fits this moment i think.

undefeated team favored by 14 with a team that most experts were picking to finish last in their division before the seasonmrgab
True, but I still think Super Bowl II was bigger. The AFL was made to look foolish multiple times by the NFL, and the Jets were 17 point underdogs, more than the Giants were today. This game is close, but not quite at that level.

But the Patriots broke nearly every record imaginable, were 18-0 and were 14 point favorites. I give the G-Men the nod, but even if the Jets take it, i'll be satisfied since they are both NY teams.
For the people who say it's the biggest ever I think you're missing a large part of football history.
When the Baltimore Colts met the New York Jets in the Superbowl they weren't even in the same league. The Jets were in the AFL which was thought of as barely even worthy to play a game against let alone face in the championship.
That win made the world take notice of the AFL and helped force the two leagues into one league.
If the Jets don't win that game there is no NFL for the Pats and Giants to play in tonight.
Not only is it the biggest upset in football history but it's also the biggest game in football history.
Biggest Upset? No.
MOST EMBARRASSING UPSET? YES!
That loss was embarrassing. How do you go 18-0 and LOSE to a Wild Card team in the "weak" NFC conference?
Embarrassing.
um i think "Greatest Game Ever Played" would be the biggest. IT kick started the excitement and fame of football. For the people who say it's the biggest ever I think you're missing a large part of football history.

Thing is, that's a long time ago. Most people only pay attention to the here and now, and not the past. I agree with you 100%.

Nah #1 in NFL is Broadway Joe, and #1 in history is the miracle on ice
Today's win was a great one, no doubt! I think it's close to Broadway Joe's but no where close to the miracle on ice! I agree with your quote!

Yeah, this doesn't touch the miracle on ice. The miracle on ice gives me chills.
But I still think it's the biggest upset in Super Bowl histroy. If not #1 it's definitely # 2.
Super Bowl III can never be unseated, but it can be tied. That is what happened today, because the most hallowed team record in the NFL is that perfect season. Not since the 40's has a team gone undefeated up to the championship and lost, and this is first time this has happened in the Super Bowl era since 1972.
By far this is the greatest upset in the past 30 years in the NFL. It almost makes Appy State/Michigan and Stanford/USC look like kiddy fodder when you consider that only 4 teams in NFL history were one win away from being undefeated, and only one team has managed to do that. I guess those Dolphins get to pop that cork in February...
As far as sports goes, as an American, I don't know if anything will ever be greater than the Miracle on Ice. Ever.

if you're talking about about greatest upset or most influential upset then i'll agree. but as far as the teams themselves on the field, based purely on the talent and coaching, regardless of its future impact on the nfl or the era in which it was played, this is the biggest upset in nfl history. end of story.don't get greatest and biggest mixed up, because there is a huge difference.

Which is why it's called a Miracle, not an upset. :PHeavily favored UNDEFEATED "dynasty" team... yeah it is the biggest in NFL history.
People can glamorize the Jets / Colts game all they want but nobody was undefeated, I think that game gets hyped due to the merger and frankly because a lot of recent Super Bowl sucked people keep looking to the past. Big game yeah but not as big an upset as this game.
Then there were some people calling the NFC the JV(junior varisity) league. You know who you are. :lol:mrgab
Which was BS, because the NFC and AFC were both tooth and nail record wise in the regular season.
not in sports history
USA hockey beat USSR (aka miracle on ice)
Appalachian State beat Michigan
those ones compete.

The Jets were from an inferior league with inferior players with inferior teams with inferior coaches.
What the Jets were able to do with less is much more impressive then what the Giants did in the same league and with the same opportunities everyone else had.
The Jets were not on an even playing field with the Colts.
Nope
Broadway Joe and his Jets still own it
That win ushered in the NFL

I completely disagree. That Colts team was playing for something that a team gets every single year: a championship. This Patriots team was playing to be the best team that has ever played the game.

The Colts were playing with the pressure of showing that the NFL was the ONLY league when it came to championship football. They had the pressure of keeping the tradition going of the NFL stomping on the AFL and proving that that AFL was always going to be a tier lower then the NFL.
The Colts were playing for perfection that day also, the NFL's streak of perfection when it faced the AFL.

I'm sorry, but winning a championship to represent the NFL is not as nearly as significant as playing to be the best football team in history.
If the Patriots-Giants game was played in 1969 and the Colts-Jets game was played yesterday, each with the same stakes as before, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

What are you talking about?
The Jets had significantly less to work with as far as everything from players to coaching to pay to facilities then the Colts did. They had like one dollar for every 10 of the Colts. It was that kind of mismatch.
The Colts were burdened with the fact that they had to prove that a team inferior in every single way wasn't worthy of playing an NFL team in the championship let alone winning.
So you think that the Giants were at a greater deficit against the Patriots then the Jets were against the Colts?

I'm sure nothing compares to some sports reporter's childhood memories and their heros. ;)
Yeah I think the Giants upset was far bigger. People can moan about the Jet's being some upstart from nowhere but clearly they were capable of beating their opponent like any team who upsets their opponent. The suckyness of their leauge doesn't rub off on them and make them suck.
