Buying players and spending the big $$$ and trying to buy their WS title. Buying Kosuke, Soriano, the big contract extension on Zambrano, now probably going to have an extension Rich Harden. Not to mention big off season rumors last seasonof A-Rod coming to the Cubs.

Huh? Except the Yankees spend nearly twice as much.

No, they're not anything like the Yankees, except that they play baseball.

Actually according to ESPN, the cubs are ranked 8th in players salaries, whereas the Cardinals are 11th.

Zambrano is their home grown talent. How is paying to keep him anything like the Yankees? You're making it look like if you spend money on your team, you're trying to buy the WS.

Other than that, a high priced Japanese import, a high priced FA outfielder and a trade for an ace. It sounds more like the Red Sox than the Yankees.

You just hit the nail on the head manningbowl. My thoughts exactly. Plus no one hates the cubs - when a neutral person turns on the tube and a cubs game is on, they'll generally root for the cubs, not against them like if it was the Yankees (or in the NFL the Patriots).

So you want the Cubs not sign Harden? Why, because you want him on your team? Anyways, the Cubs are nothing like the Yanks, we actually win sometimes.

cubs spend money on good talented players. yankees waste money. look at the knicks they buy players but they buy bad talented players.

money + talent are a good thing. cubs know how to spend money. and they did this recently because the tribune went up for sale and they wanted to increase the value of the team to sell them.

whats wrong with locking up players especially players you developed. just stfu and gtfo.

Every fan for every team will be happy to see money flow back into the team rather than rich owners pocketing the cash (Twins) . I love the win at all cost approach. I hate how fans/taxpayers get squeezed for funds (Marlins). Yankees are building a new stadium and didnt even ask the City of New York for a handout. Yankees are a well run operation. Cubs are also heading into the right direction. I think they have the right pieces to be the NL representative at the World Series. As a Yankee fan I am not sure they match up well against the Angels. We will see this weekend.

i say not winning the world series in 100 years is not really spending money on talent. Yankees have actually been winning since 1908

also crying about one team having a high salary is just jealousy cuz deny it or not you know you would want your team to buy or trade for good player when they are available

you know the cubs didnt really spend much money until the last 3-5 years. so yah just to let you know that. sure they havent won in 100 years but the red sox won two ws in last what 5 but it was like 86-87 years before that. plus i wouldnt be saying much since philly hasnt done much in a long time either for any sports team since well who cares about afl football.

The Cubs are like the Yankees in that they do spend big, probly the most of any NL team, but are different in that the Yankees have 26 world series wins, and the cubs have 2.

imo if you have a rich owner that wants to spend money then let him.

the royals have probably one of the richest owners in all of sports but he is a just really cheap.

Here are the salaries of all the teams at the beginning of the 2008 season sorted from the highest. The Cubs are only the 3rd highest in the NL and 8th overall. And did I see that right? The White Sox even have a higher payroll? I think it's real interesting to look at that list and compare it to todays standings to see who spent smartly and who didn't. Look at the Rays and Marilins and compare them to the three highest paid players on the Yanks. Alex Rodriguez $28,000,000 Jason Giambi $23,428,571 Derek Jeter $21,600,000 NL NY Mets - $137,793,376 LA Dodgers - $118,588,536 Chicago Cubs - $118,345,833 Atlanta Braves - $102,365,683 St. Louis Cardinals - $99,624,449 Philadelphia Phillies - $98,269,880 Houston Astros - $88,930,414 Milwaukee Brewers - $80,937,499 San Francisco Giants - $76,594,500 Cincinnati Reds - $74,117,695 San Diego Padres - $73,677,616 Colorado Rockies - $68,655,500 Arizona Diamondbacks - $66,202,712 Washington Nationals - $54,961,000 Pittsburgh Pirates - $48,689,783 Florida Marlins - $21,811,500 AL NY Yankees - $209,081,577 Detroit Tigers - $137,685,196 Boston Red Sox - $133,390,035 Chicago White Sox - $121,189,332 Los Angeles Angels - $119,216,333 Seattle Mariners - $117,666,482 Toronto Blue Jays - $97,793,900 Cleveland Indians - $78,970,066 Texas Rangers - $67,712,326 Baltimore Orioles - $67,196,246 Kansas City Royals - $58,245,500 Minnesota Twins - $56,932,766 Oakland Athletics - $47,967,126 Tampa Bay Devil Rays - $43,745,597

It has nothing to do with the Yankees. The Yankees have spent like crazy (trust me, as a Yankee fan I hate it, cause the Dynasty in the late 90's was not "bought").

It has to do with the fact that the MLB Players Union, as well as the owners are very powerful.

If a cap is ever put into motion it will need approval of all 30 teams. The Yanks would not vote to pass it in 1000 years.

Neither would The Mets, Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Angels. You can't pin it on just one team, thats completely unfair.

The league is doing incredible financially, why screw it up? Because your team is doing terrible? Thats management's fault for putting a terrible product on the field. You don't have to spend a lot of money to have success (which is something I wish Steinbrenner would acknowledge).

Whatever is how I feel nowadays, MLB is a business. You spend money to make money(and to win for some)
