How good? Well, they currently have the best record in baseball. They're pitching staff has been lights out (Dice-K just pitched a complete game giving up one earned run) and yesterday they came back from a 5-0 deficit in the ninth to win 6-5. Now, I know it's early in the season, but I think this could be the best Red Sox team assembled in a long time. Anyone else agree?

Would like to see us win the AL East this season, because I think the Wildcard is going to come out of the central again this year. My guess is that the Indians will get it.

They're overrated in my opinion. Their offense is mediocre at best, and although their pitching has been great so far, I predict it'll slow down as the year progresses, and expect the entire team to slow down when that happens. They're in position to take the AL East, but don't count the injury riddled Jays and Yanks out yet.

They're the best team in baseball right now, but it's mid-May.  A lot can happen over the long baseball season.

But at this point last year, the Sox were only up by a game. And this year's team is better than last year's. Not to mention the Yanks are reeling (though righting their ship a bit).

Though I'm as sick as anyone of hearing about them on every major sports media outlet at any given moment of the day. When do they tape a camera to Dice-K's head and stream it over the net so we can keep track of what he's doing all the time? BRILLIANT!

If the World Series were held in May, the Red Sox would win it every year.
So far they're playing excellent baseball, but lets see how they play as the season progresses.

Great: Ramirez, Ortiz
Solid: Drew, Lowell, Veritek
Mediocre: Remainder of roster

This is being based on season and career stats. I might have been exaggerating when I said "mediocre" but they aren't "great" either, solid, but nothing special, they lack overall depth.

OK so the ace of the Tigers Justin Verlander won against the Red Sox last night 7-2.  Where were your good players.  Tim Wakefield gave up 5 of those runs last night.  The Tigers are the team to beat in my opinion.  Tigers - Brewers or Tigres - Mets World Series.  Its hard to call cause the Mets killed the Brewers but then the Cubs killed the Mets.  So the NL is hard to call but I think Detroit has the AL this year.  Best offence in baseball, 3 players all fighting for the batting title - Magglio with a 348 batting average i think, Guillen with a 340ish, and polonco with a 355 last time i checked.  Plus our starting 5 once we get Rogers and Bondo healthy will be amazing, or just let Miller take over the 5th spot, we will see how he does on Friday night against those Cardinals.  Oh by the way, if the Tigers take the next two games against the Red Sox they will be tied for first place in the AL with the Red Sox, FYI.

interesting statement.  the red sox lead the major leagues in runs scored.  they also lead the league in runs against.

Wakefield might be old enough to receive social security, he's impossible to catch, and he hasn't been the same since Boone hit that homer off him in the '03 ALCS. The Sox aren't exactly putting all their chips in his corner. Their lineup is strong enough to carry an average pitching staff. The Yanks may have a stronger lineup, but their pitching staff is just downright abysmal.

Hold on there, don't get ahead of yourself, I like the sox too but I know all too well how quickly a season can deteriorate. For instance last year when the bosox were pretty much in first place in the east all year and then a few key injuries and underperformers and next thing you know your behind the blue jays and out of post season play.....and by the way Dice K didn't even look that impressive on that complete game and look who he was pitching too, the swing and miss/swing at first pitch/no walks team, the Detroit Tigers. Curt Schilling has looked very mediocre, Beckett is having blister problems again, wakefield is wakefield, and JUILIAN TAVAREZ is our number five starter, are you kidding me...We have a ton of flaws which haven't yet been exploited, only time will tell how good the sox really are.....

Red Sox are darn good. Tops In the AL for sure. Other good tems are angels, A's, indians, twins, white sox but none really as good as the Red Sox.

BTW, they ave a very productive offense. whoever said tey didn't is mentally challenged or knows nothing about baseball.

You are saying those that fail to realize that the Red Sox have a good team are mentally challenged or know nothing about baseball yet you fail to mention the Detroit Tigers as one of the best teams in the AL this year.  Yea, who does not know much about baseball, finger is pointing at you.  Tigers are in first place and have some of the best offensive players this year, they also have one of the best young pitching staffs in baseball.  Mention the White Sox and Twins but not the Tigers, wow.

First off, numbers lie and dice k only has had maybe two or three starts in which he looked like the guy we payed for, the guy who was a legend in Japan. The start vs. detroit was not one of them, yes he pitched a complete game win but like I said the Tigers don't walk, they aren't a patient ballclub and they strike out alot, remember when he pitched against the yankees and gave up like 17 runs in two games against them?

Beckett has been unbelievable so far in the season but he is having BLISTER PROBLEMS, so he will be on and off the DL.

And did I mention julian tavarez being our number fifth starter?....

With or without injuries, Beckett is bound to slow down. He'll still have a great season posting an ERA around 3.50-ish and a positive record, but probably not a Cy Young candidate.

I like the yankees and i hate to admit that the boston red sox are playing excellent baseball so far this year. But let's wait when october comes and the sox choke.

umm.... it's ATL not ALT.  And yes Dice-K owned the Braves in the first game, but in the second it's been ALL SMOLTZ.  And how bout Chipper and Diaz taking it over the monster? 8)

And what about Kelly's great game, almost hitting for the cycle. Anyway, I hope today's game will be as good as last night's.

I've never seen scores so lopsided (13-3 the first game, 14-0 the second game) before, but that might have to do with the pitchers that started each game.

[QUOTE="BeanTownBrown86"][QUOTE="UssjTrunks"]They're overrated in my opinion. Their offense is mediocre at best, and although their pitching has been great so far, I predict it'll slow down as the year progresses, and expect the entire team to slow down when that happens. They're in position to take the AL East, but don't count the injury riddled Jays and Yanks out yet.UssjTrunks

their offense is mediocre at best? even if i wasnt a sox fan i would have to disagree with you, look at the stats

Great: Ramirez, Ortiz
Solid: Drew, Lowell, Veritek
Mediocre: Remainder of roster

This is being based on season and career stats. I might have been exaggerating when I said "mediocre" but they aren't "great" either, solid, but nothing special, they lack overall depth.

Individually, maybe.  But as a team, they are the best in the league.  Last time i heard (a day ago) the Sox had the highest OBP and slugging%.  And one of the highest averages.
