1. joe montana- greatest qb ever hands down no one else like him. he managed the game very good and just amazing4 sb rings.

2. brett favre- all qbs records never miss a qb start and 1 sb ring...perfect resume?

3.terry bradshaw- 4sb rings real good qb and u can count him to make almost every throw in big games

4. john elway- the old guy did it in his final 2yrs! as a rookie to a vet he played at a high lvl. some say hes greatest in my list #4.

5.dan marino- if he had a sb ring he would be top 3.. he was like john elway. he just threw the ball alot. the dolphins plan was simple just throw the ball and win in a shoot out. kinda like this yrs pats but no undefeated season and cheating...

peyton manning will be top 5 when he is retired..brady top 15 he doesnt have that big arm like manning. and one great season doesnt mean hes the greatest qb of all time like some TV analysist. thats their job make useless analysis

1) Joe Montana: I was never much of his supporters, but I've come around. He's the greatest ever.

2) Marino: If he played with the rules of today, his stats would be untouchable.

3) Unitas: I have no idea what he is or how good he was. But according to the old analysts, he was the first great forward passer and the first of the prototypical NFL QB of today.

4) Elway: Sucked for the first couple of seasons, but still great.

5) I don't know. Probably Favre.

I think Manning and Brady will be in this list after their career is over. I'm excluding them by default b/c they're still playing.

Elway sucked his first couple of years? He lead the Broncos to the playoffs both years and in his 2nd year he led the Broncos to a 13 win season which was the most for that franchise at the time. Yeah, he was terrible his first two years.

I am going with the top five that I have seen play.

1) Joe Montana, he was an artist and unstoppable when championships were on the line.

2) Brett Favre, the consecutive starts, the numbers, the plays made on the fly, and bringing the title back to Green Bay make him an easy pick for me. I would place him at number one if not for the loss to Denver.

3) John Elway, the all time greatest in high pressure situations, ended career with back to back titles, what a way to go!

4) Steve Young, he was a great runner and scrambler, he could pull plays from out of nowhere, it's a shame that he couldn't leave the game on his terms, had he started and been healthy his entire career, well God only knows.

5) Troy Aikman, great player and leader, three Super Bowl rings, made mistakes about as often as the Cowboys lost in their 90's heyday, on a run first team he was always there when they needed the long ball.

Honorable mentions, Dan Marino, great passer and leader but no ring. Warren Moon great pure passer, led the best run and shoot offense the NFL has ever seen. Jim Kelly, getting to the Super Bowl four years straight is a phenomenal accomplishment, and keeping your head up after losing them all may be even more phenomenal.

Please explain this, I can't figure out what rules implemented in the last few years would have helped anyone pad their stats.

The NFL going overboard protecting QB's

Add in that WR's get away with just about everything these days

Not to be a stickler but Marino's best season's statistically were '84 and '86. Also he was untouched on the play where he tore his Achilles.

Finally in the key of speculation, seven years of Marino and Favres careers as starters overlapped so in the vein of the original comment on old rules bringin' Dan down, Favre's stats would have benefitted as much or more than Mr. Marino's right?

He threw 47 TDs and 52 interceptions in his first 3 years. His career started a lot like Eli. Bad statistics, but the wins. I don't think you'll find anyone who say Eli's first 3 years statistically was good.

Defensive backs no touching after 5 yards. That's the only one needed.

Consider this. In 1993, John Elway threw for 25 TDs and was the second most in the league. In 2008, there were 10 guys over 25 TDs in the league.

Ok. Doesn't change the fact that he, as an individual player was a bad player during those three players.

So you're also saying Eli was a good QB for the last few years? This should be good coming from a Cowboys fan.

Some of that relates to the influence of the greatest show on turf, offensive coordinators started to emulate that scheme after the Rams lit up the NFC in 99.

As I said before Dan did fine in 84 and 86. The fact is that he slowed down, a tendon in his heel snapped of it's own accord and nothing was going to give him one more TD pass or yard. He was great but he never sealed the deal, and more of the fault for that lies with Don Shula than with Mr. Marino.
