What an excellent finish!!!

Nice, during stoppage time. That may have been one of the biggest goals in Team USA history. Do you agree? Now we can stop concerning ourselves with that horrible call. It's all moot now since we advance.DJ_Magneto
What's too bad is that horrible call as well as the many others that have been called against the USA in this World Cup is a big reason why a lot of people here in the US can't stand soccer. Not to mention the horrible acting that takes place and gets rewarded. I'm a huge sports fan and I like soccer, but this World Cup (that I have watched most of) just keeps giving me more and more examples of why I don't watch soccer on a regular basis. Great goal though and it does thankfully make those bad calls a moot point at least in that it didn't stop the USA from advancing.

Had it stopped the USA from advancing, the World Cup would take a beating by the media.I am at my dad's for the summer. Well my dad is Puerto Rican along with his Columbian girlfriend, her son, daughter, and brother also live here ( big house, bigger household). Since Mexico or anyone else close to them was not playing today, they cheered for the good ol' red, white, and blue. My dad's house has 2 balconies in the house. One of them is 20 feet off the ground and the other is 25 feet off the ground. When Donovan scored, my dad came running out of his room and hopped the 20 foot balcony and landed on the couch and started jumping up and down. I found the historical goal exciting, but not that exciting. When I asked him what he was doing all he could scream was "ENGLAND MADE IT THROUGH!!!" I was stunned and speechless. Little did I know my dad was a huge England fan. Here I thought he was so excited over Donovan' unforgettable goal.
So the US wins the group, right? Since England also won, they also have a record of 1-0-2 and 5 points like the US, but the US scored 2 goals to England's 0 in their second games which they both had draws.DJ_Magneto
Yeah the U.S. wins the group. England is second so they are in too.

No offence but only the American media would care, and that would not do much.[QUOTE="hockeyruler12"][QUOTE="nickdastick"]Had it stopped the USA from advancing, the World Cup would take a beating by the media. Yeah, in the world's perspective, it wouldn't be that big a deal. I just think it would have been another big blow for the popularity of soccer here in the US. I'm glad they made it through though because it keeps them in the World Cup and should boost popularity here.
Firstly, I want to say that this isn't meant to sound patronising, but it probably will to all of those who follow soccer/football in the US. I am so glad, as an English fan to see the USA go through to the group stages. I never knew that Soccer had any kind of real following in the US at all, yet you guys have bought more tickets than anyone else in the world. You won the group and deserved it, and despite an massively improved performance against slovenia, we didn't deserve to go through as we were just awful the first 2 games.
I really hope you go far in this tournament as it will really help with the popularity of the game in the US. Now all you need to do is drop all the franchising stuff and allow clubs with rich owners to buy and own some of the best players in the world. You have the money and the fans, as you've proved in this tournament.
I'm pretty sure we will struggle now as, if we manage to beat Germany, we will, in all likelihood, have another really hard test against probably the best attacking team in the tournament so far, the Argentinians.
Here's to another USA v England meeting in the final, just hoping we will be able to beat you this time!
great job! the US of A took another step towards becoming a true staying power in the international football scene. credit goes to Landon Donovan, who is perhaps one of the world's most underrated player. i expect to see this outfit go very far in this tournament. :)

Well, the ball did find him, but ya gotta capitilize on the juicy rebounds

Donovan did MUCH more than poking in a rebound. don't forget his presence was colossal in the match against Slovenia. without him, US couldn't have drawn level to stay alive in the group, and the whole gang could be flying back home for an early summer now.
i gotta say it, guys.... you don't seem to realise how big a slam dunk this whole thing really is. the US went through to the last 16 in hands down the world's biggest sporting event, riding on the back of the absolutely stunning Landon Donovan, who has been bigger than Captain America himself and in any of the more football-savy countries will likely be hailed as God. instead, CNN did a half-assed five-things-you-should-know like he's some backstreet boy barely worthy of a passing remark.
Your comments are more generous than others I've read. *looks up bolded part of post* Wow, I didn't realize that either. Sam's Army for the win. Good luck against Germany.Firstly, I want to say that this isn't meant to sound patronising, but it probably will to all of those who follow soccer/football in the US. This is a messed up world cup. USA advances, France and Italy don't. What's next?monkeytoes61That's what's great about sports. Nothing is set in stone. Anything can happen.
