For those Americans who missed it, Obama told ESPN's Stuart Scott the other day that Cubs fans were essentially frauds. His exact words were these: ''The Cubs ... they're nice. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer ... there are beautiful people out there, people aren't watching the game. ''That's not serious,'' Obama said, without any doubt or reservation. ''White Sox, that's baseball ... South Side.'' You may just blow this off and say that this will have little effect on the outcome of the election. Bah, it's just baseball. It's not politics. But to insult the obvious majority of (HIS OWN CITY) Chicago sports fans with typical White Sox fan inferiority complex statements is just dumb. Think about the Cubs fans that show up at games all over America. I know that must annoy people to see so many Cub fans at a Diamonbacks game or a Padres game or even a freaking Tampa Bay Rays game for example, but it's undeniable we're all over America. From what I've seen, the numbers show that it's a neck and neck race right now with a large percentage undecided. I'm an undecided. Do you think I'm going to vote for him now? What if (GULP) the Cubs win the Series? Is Obama going to turn back on his own statements as he has done on many others? Here's a statement from an angered fan from the article posted below. ''Christ, this guy has enough issues trying to win over the American public,'' another said. ''But to go out and bash what has become America's team in an election year? Is this how deep the pathetic jealousy and insecurities of Sox fans stretch? I mean, politicians are notorious for not trying to offend anybody while running for office. And this fool goes out of his way to take a shot at his own constituency? Good god. What a stupid stupid statement.'' Barack Obama Talks Sports With Stuart ScottObama pitch is in the dirt Take this as serious as you want. Blow it off. But he lost my vote.

I personally dont think so. I mean, everyone is entitled to like whatever team they like, right? He actually showed a human side that i enjoyed in this interview, and it actually made me like Obama a bit more (not too big of a fan to be honest, but it changed some aspects of what i used to think about him).

Yes, because we all know Canadians aren't allowed to have an opinion

If you are going to let a little comment about the cubs interfere with your voting then you don't deserve to vote in the first place.

Guess what though. I do have a vote. And there are plenty of other people just like me who are undecided who were rubbed the wrong way with those comments. I don't hate him. I'm just not voting for him. Anyone's opinion is fine. That's why I started this thread. AK47 said, "Who cares?" I assumed he's from Canada because of his sig. If he is Canadian, he's not voting for the President of the United States so he probably doesn't care about this particular election as much as an American.

At least Obama isn't like Hillary or Giuliani, who say they're fans of *insert whatever state/city they're in right now*. Anyone who has been to Wrigley Field knows that Obama is just telling the truth. I've been to Comiskey/US Cellular many times, and Wrigley a few times... you see a lot more pink hats and whatnot at Wrigley.

Obama has Illinois wrapped up, so he really has nothing to worry about there in terms of a backlash -- and the amount of Cubs fans in other states who let this effect their vote will be minimal.

Actually, anyone who lets this effect their vote should have their voting rights taken away.

What does a pink hat have to do with being into a game? Someone made this comment in that article and I have to agree. ''If Cubs fans 'aren't in the game,' then how does that place roar when there are two strikes on a batter in a key situation? It's not like there's a buzzer under their seats telling them to rise and make noise.'' And you know, this is the beauty of Democracy. We have the right to vote for who ever we want for whatever reason we want. If someone doesn't want to vote for McCain because he's old, that's your right. If you don't want to vote for Obama because of his supposed "lack of experience in Washington" that's your right. I know people who would vote for a candidate if their wife was prettier than the other's. That's their right. If I don't want to vote for Obama because of what he said about the Cubs, that's my right.

[QUOTE="jowe "]

I'm a Cubs fan. I don't have any problem with Obama (or anyone else) being a White Sox fan. More power to you. Root for your team. When the Sox won the WS I was happy for my friends who were Sox fans. But just as White Sox fans hold their team close to their hearts, Cubs' fans do the same. When a guy, I don't care who it is, comes on and makes a blanket statement saying that my fan base "doesn't really watch the game" and "are not serious" fans, I take offense to it. I am part of that fan base. He is saying that I'm not a real baseball fan or a serious one. While I understand that baseball is only a game, I have invested A LOT of time and emotion over my whole life rooting for this team, just as White Sox fans have done. So, don't tell me that I'm not serious about it. I don't care if it was a little toungue-in-cheek. It was just an extraordinarily stupid thing to say. It takes something - important or not - which is very imprtant to them - and makes you feel like he thinks you are a fool for not being a true fan. Dumb move Obama. Maybe even a bit elitist.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

Why are you guys getting so worked up about it....

His team is the White Sox and he's just taking a friendly jab at the Cubs...

Hell if I was in his position I'd be taking countless jabs at the Raiders, Broncos, Chiefs, Dodgers, and Patriots.

Politics and sports have nothing to do with each other and if you are basing you vote on a comment like that then you are voting for the wrong reasons. The reason to vote is to pick the guy we can trust the most with the way we live not about an opinion about sports fans which will not affect your life in any way. I am not protecting Obama since I dont vote and never will vote. If I were to vote I wouldnt vote for either Obama or McCain.

Totally, as a Mets fan, I hated seeing Rudy Giuliani at Shea Stadium cheering for the team when he has proudly proclaimed how much of a huge Yankees fan he is.

However, I feel major politicians should keep their allegiances at bay.

Sad, this is why America is the way it is, you're swayed by a comment that he made over a baseball team? Votes based on emotions? WTF!?

In fact I want to see politicians participate! That's right! "Hey Cubs fans, sorry Wrigley field has been rezoned as a garbage dump, find a new place to play! Oh and that new tax on north side pro baseball teams, sorry about that!"

Oh, God. I hate both McCain and Obama, but it seems like everybody's trying to get even the slightest piece of dirt on Obama in the most insulting way. First, people get onto Obama for saying children should speak Spanish because they think he's trying to support illegal immagrants, now people say Obama hates America's team because the Cubs turned out to be the bandwagon team. Remember '06? They didn't even win 70 games. Trust me, most of these "Cubs fans" are fans for the same reason why there was so many Red Sox fans last year. When the Cubs start to suck, most of the fans will leave, just like with any other sport.
