Biggest loss in US sports history

This team should hang it's head, it had a clear path to the final four and couldn't get it done

Whoever built this team needs to be fired

Totally agree. There are much bigger losses in US history in other sports as well as soccer.

It's a tough pill to for the US to swallow losing to Ghana without Essien, but the US went about as far as they could with that talent. Ghana is a quality team and I see them knocking Uruguay out in the next round.

What do you mean by "whoever built this team"? It's not like there are better American players out there. They didn't have a "clear" path to the final four. They had an "easier" path and got beat by a better team. That's all there is to it.

This is soccer. US failed to execute on clear chances to score. Shot right at the goalie, Ghana didn't had 2 great goals.

Nobody thought the US-Ghana game would be easy...most people were saying it was a toss-up. And anyone who paid attention to the World Cup so far could tell you that Uruguay has been playing better than the US.

Seriously, do you always take the contrarian point of view on purpose? The US was ranked 14th, they finished pretty much right where they were expected to finish. No matter who built the team and what players they got, there was no way the US was going to be in the top tier of teams with Brazil, Argentina, and the Netherlands.

While the loss was huge and a disappointment, I disagree. Uruguay is the best team in that bracket.

Besides Ghana was the better team.

As for this being "the biggest loss in US Sport History" well.......... I find that very hard to believe. No one in America watches soccer. The World Cup is not a big deal in America. At all. I remember reading the viewer number's from the last Cup and more people watched a repeat of CSI than the USA-Italy match  So lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

For real. For me, the USA losing in olympic hockey was more of a disappointment than this is.

There are definitely diehard soccer fans who follow all the qualifying matches and whatnot, but for many Americans the World Cup is just a fun thing to latch onto for a couple weeks every 4 years. I think most Americans are going to get over this loss really quick.

What do you mean best team, by rankings? Those don't mean much in a tournament like this that, where one goal, one breakdown can cost the game. Italy and France are top ten, and they didn't advance. Russia and Croatia didn't even make it. So best team ≠ guaranteedsuccess.

As for biggest loss ever..I doubt that. The Gold medal game at the Olympics this year was bigger, or losing to Greece in basketball.

This loss shows the US team is still a 2nd-tier team at best. Football in America still has a long way to go.

nope. if anything, this worldcup shows that the US is a true staying power in worldclass football. They have the skill and the heart not only to win, but to come back from behind. in this particular match, they did much better in 2nd half and things could've gone either way. let's not forget that Ghana was no slouch, with or without Essian.

most importantly, if fans from some all-talk-no-show European countries think they can diss the US team they'd better stop embarassing themselves.

Big loss. U.S just got outplayed plain and simple. Without that Penalty I'm not even sure they would of scored, tbh.

I think they underestimated Ghana. They were looking to far ahead to the Uruguay match, then past that to the Semi-Finals against Brazil/Holland.

surely you're not implying that US is the only team which has conceded goal in this tournament, which is absolutely false. what matters more than a clean sheet is the tenacity to endure and overcome. the US could've done that AGAIN as they improved considerably in the 2nd half.

You are going overboard, this is far from the biggest. I really even doubt that many Americans care. I mean the world cup game between the USA and Slovenia was 8th in the cable ratings, behind WWE Monday Night Raw. Pawn Stars got over 1 million more viewers.

I agree, we have some who are huge soccer fans but in reality soccer has never been that huge here. It maybe growing, but its still nowhere near football or basketball. It maybe our 4th or 5th sport.

Funny you say that cause its the same team that beat them LMAO And im also goin for holland.. What do you mean face what? I clearly stated that they suck. Its not a question that I left open lol. Ask your self what has any american player done thats note worthy in international or even club soccer thats note worthy. They are a horrible team and they dont deserve to even play internationally. lmao. Not like Ghana has done anything note worthy ever either. By your theory you guys shouldn't deserve to play internationally either. Which is just a dumb thing to say in the first place. You just beat the US, a team you say is horrible and shouldn't be allowed to play. What does that say about Ghana? I was talking as a whole THere is much more Ghanian talent then there is American Thats a fact that you can not deny. And if you knew anything about soccer you would know that ghana's U-20 team won the world cup last year and they are 4 time winners of the african cup son. Do some research before you speak. Im just pissed at the fact that Americans dont even consider ghana a decent team they only knocked them out twice. Im not being cocky obviously I dont believe Ghana is the best team in the world but they are surely good competitors. What does Ghana beating a crappy team say about ghana you ask? Its says that are able to compete at a world class calibre and the U.S. isnt. I wouldnt be saying any of these if I didnt see the post in the early pages.

IF you also consider the resources of each country and how much they invest into soccer programs I makes The U.S. team look even more crappy. I thought Ill add that in.

What does their U-20 team have to do with anything?

You said the USA will never will a World Cup and that they suck. Well guess what, Ghana has no chance of winning and therefore suck. Works both ways, no?

"Im just pissed at the fact that Americans dont even consider ghana a decent team"

That's just a lie. The game was considered by almost everyone to be 50/50. Even the 2 guys I saw on ESPN predicting a winner before the game split the vote, one picking USA one picking Ghana. Hell I thought they where going to lose before the game started.

No team in the final 16 sucks. So stop.

lmao. Not like Ghana has done anything note worthy ever either. By your theory you guys shouldn't deserve to play internationally either. Which is just a dumb thing to say in the first place. You just beat the US, a team you say is horrible and shouldn't be allowed to play. What does that say about Ghana? Who's cocky again? :| At first I thought the American posting was being ridiculous but you just took it to another level.

limpbizkit818

So stop.

Has no chance but they are still in the competition so they do have a chance do they not? What does 2 sport panel analysis have to do with anything I never knew 2 peoples opinion one of which is probably from the UK have to do with any of this. The U-20 team has everything to do with this it represents the a milestone and an accomplishment one of which the US is incapable of further proving my point.. So you stop. Edit who is this everyone you speak of I seen about 3 different polls on ESPN which American supporters had that US over Ghana it was a landslide for the US.

You are another foreign troll who underestimates US players. Please, atleast go troll another thread. I'm already sick of you guys in the OT world cup thread.

If Donovan sucks, he wouldn't have been loved in Everton upto the point fans were chanting USA.

Dont get me wrong hes a good player but highly overpaid. Thats good that him and Howard are faring well in everton but they didnt win a EPL with him so it doesnt matter what people chant.

They didn't, but they certainly played well and deserve respect.

And if you didn't hear yet, Man City is interested in Donovan. Link.

Thats good for those players though let them win a champions league title like Balotelli, Muntari and Essien then they will get all the respect they deserve. Till then....

Rza_rectah

They really don't have a chance, sorry.

And the point I was tring to make with the ESPN guys was that not even the media was behind the team 100%. Our biggest sports channel was split on the outcome of the game. And ok, a poll on ESPN from a handful ofheavily biasedpeople picked the USA. ESPN.com is not a soccer website. I am sure polls in Ghana was slanted way in Ghana's favor. Most of those voters I am sure where from people who went on ESPN.com to look up some other info, saw a poll with USA vs another team, and just voted USA. If you had read the newspapers, watched coverage before the game, or spoke to most of the people on these forums before the game, you would know that it was a 50/50 match.

Like another user said, you're borderline trolling. The U-20 teams have nothing to do with the national teams in this tournament. Listen, I am glad you're happy that you're team beat the USA national team. Congrats. But I'll say it again: no team in the final 16 sucks.

but they do have a chance in the literal meaning of the word do you know the definition of the word? As I said before i only posted my reponse because of the replies i seen in thread and the U - 20 has nothing to do with world cup now but it has everything to do with my statment and Ghanas future.
