NHL signed with OLN(Versus) because they were willing to pay the NHL more than ESPN. WNBA has nothing to do with it.

Ok.

You know how far hockey has fallen, when ESPN won't pay more money than OLN to show NHL games on their channel...

Reguardless of the money issues going on, it's still sad that the WNBA is being shown on ESPN, instead of the NHL.

Its not like hockey is unpopular everywhere in the USA. The Avs, Redwings, Rangers, Sabres, Devils, Pens, Stars, Sharks, Thrashers, and Flyers actually have a huge fan base, and are pretty popular there. Although i do agree some franchises such as the Preds should be moved to Canada.

I've been saying that since the bs in 1999.

The NHL really could do with a new commisionor. Bettman is just not helping the cause here and he is the one that is ruining it.

Yes, I agree with all that Gary Bettman needs to go. That man is making some terrible decisions and is bringing the league down to nothing practically. It almost seems like his intention is to take hockey completely off the world.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure poker routinely beats Baseball and Basketball as well. Only Football and Nascar (amongst major American sports) get higher ratings than poker.

No doubt that so many people regularly attending soccer games is impressive, but let's be fair and consider the fact that much fewer people are able to actually get into a hockey rink. Most NHL rinks allow 18k-21k fans, and the league as a whole draws pretty damn good attendance percentages. As I've said before, marketing and TV product placement are the main issues here.

maybe thats because the NHL left ESPN, because ESPN wasn't going to pay them any money. They signed with OLN (Versus) to get more money after the strike.

Hockey's a great sport, but a big part of what made it so great was the strong rivalry's the sport use to have. The Hab's and Leafs rivalry is nearly gone, the battle of Alberta has been dead for a while now and even more recent rivalry's like the Av's and the Wings is fizzing out. Part of the reason is the number of unnecessary expansion teams that clubs are forced to play, these new teams haven't had time to create an image.

Hockey just expanded too fast, and the league has lost some of it's flair and personality.

yeah i agree, as an Avs fan i don't really hate the wings anymore, I remember back when the Avs were a power house team like the wings, there was alot ofanomosity between the teams, and i actually hated everything about the wings.

The Sabres-Sens seems strong, seems like when ever they play a big fight is bound to break out. 8)

Fact: The NHL signed with OLN/Versus for more money than ESPN, mainly because of the lockout.

Popularity has little to do with it. Both Hockey and Soccer have their pros and cons, obviously. Poker's recent rise in popularity is amazing, and in the US, it's more popular than both Hockey and Soccer.

Personally, I prefer hockey whenever I can get it these days. However, I come down with some World Cup Fever every four years. Neither is better than the other. Both are great sports for their respective audiences.

Battle of Alberta dead? Try telling that to the people I know that live there! There might not be the hatred between the players like there used to be, but the fans are definitely keeping it alive.
