I want to take a break from final fantasy. but i dont know what rpg 2 play. i need help trying to find a rpg to spend time on this summer. (exept kingdom hearts, already completed all of them)
If you're looking for a recently released title for Square-Enix on the Playstation 2 then I would recommend either Dragon Quest VIII or Radiata Stories. If you'd like to play a classic non Final Fantasy game for either the SNES or Playstation (can be played on PS2 as well) then I would have to say Chrono Trigger is a fantastic title as well. Xenogears is yet another excellent option and I've never played Super Mario RPG so I can't exactly give my opinions on that.
STAR OCEAN: TILL THE END OF TIME!!!!!
Personally, my favorite PS2 RPG ever made. Its Graphics are wonderful, the environments are lush and full of colour and the animations are smooth and look quite good when being performed in battle. The soundtrack would be good enough in my opinion to be used in a Final Fantasy game. The controls are tight and the gameplay is long, challenging and quite fun. There are basically two games in one when you purchase this title: the main game, and a funky side-game thats full of Ultima-like bosses, its fun and truly tests your RPG skills. The characters are lovable and the story is very interesting and more than acceptable for your standard role-playing romp. It took me 356 hours to complete this game 100%! Its well worth your time, especially if you liked any of the other previous star ocean games. Thats just my opinion.....
I haven't played much by Square-enix other than FFs and KH, but, like Somegamer said, DragonQuest VIII is really great. I'd definitely say go with that one. It's a lot of fun. :)
I just got Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve2, but since I haven't played them yet I can't tell you how they are. It sounds like they play somewhat similarly to KH as in they're adventure RPGs and their battle systems were all done by the same guy. They're also on the cheap side since they're PS1 games. I don't know if you're looking for strictly fantasy games or not though, but these are definitely more along the lines of horror.
A great and overlooked PS1 horror RPG is Koudelka. Sacnoth is the company that developed the game, but the company was made up of people who previously worked for Squaresoft. It's like traditional RPGs in that you enter a battle screen for battles, but the arena is set up like a chess board that you can move your characters around on, so there's a strategy element as well. It's a really fun game with a good story. Might be a little hard to find though.
Square Enix has a bunch of non final fantasy games that rock. Here are some of my favs- PLUS these all have great replay value. espescially Chrono Chross because once you beat it, you get NEW GAME+ and you have a speed option where you can complete the game so much faster by holding down L2 or something like that So you can get every character.
1.) Dragon Quest VIII
2.) Chrono Chross (for reg ps)
3.) Star Ocean
4.) If anyone says grandia III, they are lying to you.
5.) and lastly, if you want a non square enix rpg, go with Suikoden III, Its one of my fav RPGSÂ of all time. (the others in the series are not nearly as good and im currently playing V which is good, but Suikoden III was amazing.)
Vagrant Story, Star Ocean 3.
If anyone says Drakenguard or Unlimited saga. Smack them. Smack them hard.
I'd go with Chrono Trigger (obviously); Final Fantasy III or VII if you haven't played them.
Dragon Quest VIII is excellent.
I enjoyed Star Ocean: Till the end of time... but it has a nasty surprise that made me stop playing and sell it back. Star Ocean 2 was better in my opinion.
Alundra 1 (stay away from 2) is good.
Breath of Fire III and IV are great.
Just about any Zelda game- Windwaker looks childish, but will keep you going for a LOOOOOONG time.
Skies of Arcadia is masterful.
Chrono Cross is good - if you haven't played Chrono Trigger and don't have any expectations.
Have you played any of the Arc The Lad games? Thier good too.
Get your hands on Wild Arms 3 (I like all of the Wild Arm games - despite the first one being agonizingly slow at times).
Go really old school and get Illusion of Gaia, Soulblazer or Secret of Mana..
Or try Legend of Mana....
Uhh, lets see...I can suggest Tales of Legendia - NOT THE SECOND ONE, the first one!
Speaking of Tales - Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Phantasia (by both companies) are excellent RPGs.
Try Morrowind and just forget about ever going outside again...
You know what - I think you said Square-Enix games... darn it, and I was on a roll! Well - some of those are Square games, pardon my faux-paux...
