Do you try to finish all the sidequests when playing a Square Enix game?

Or all the ultimate weapons, summons and such. Do you spend the extra time to try to get the most out of your games, or you just go through the main storyline and that's it?

For me, it depends. I tend to spend a LOT more time on Final Fantasy games, trying to do all the quests I can and collecting all the best equipments. However, when it comes to other series, I'll do that only if the game is compelling enough to make me want to go ahead and do all the sidequests.

I think I did for Final Fantasy VII and VIII but I think thats it. I never complete all the sidequests on my first go through with a game. Maybe on the secound or third time around.

I always have to get everything.. hence why I'm at the last boss in a lot of my games but refuse to fight him because I'm not done all the quests or I don't have all the ultimate weapons.

I'm obsesive when it comes to completing a game.  I will refuse to put away the game untill I get completely 100% in it.  Thats why I put the games I have yet to get 100% on my Now playing list :P.

Wow I feel emasculated. Am I really the only one who doesn't finish all Final Fantasy game sidequests first time playing a game? Apparently...:?

I sometimes do, only the medium and easy ones. I go back and do the harder ones after I finish the story.

Haven't done so on the recent ones. I believe I did for Final Fantasy VI, VII and VIII. Not so much X and XII.

I can't do that because I get bored with the game and end up not beating it! I learned this lesson last year; I tried this method of getting 100% and then defeating the last boss and finishing the game. What would happen is that I'd get tired of grinding and etc, and then just leaving the game like that and getting to play another.

Now I just do what I've done for the most part of my gaming life - finish the game and see the cute ending, THEN go back and finish the rest of the stuff I missed.

I usually first do a bs run. Then I replay it with gfaqs help and get 100% completion with all the sidequests done, stats maxed, and etc.  Then I replay again with more bs runs just to get pure enjoyment out of the games.  FFXII however....I don't think I'll ever play that again....

Yes sidequests are my favorite thing in a rpg. Most of the FF games i played i haven't beaten most sidequest usually because its too hard or i just give up.

I accidently sold something in FF12 that makes it so I can't complete one of the side quests (why do they let you sell those kind of things???) so since I can't get 100% of everything done I can't complete the game.. and I'm too far in to consider restarting.  So unless there's a way of me walking up to every merchant and trying to find who I sold it to... *saddest sound*

You sold the Great Serpentskin, didn't you Yuna?

I almost sold it myself, a couple of times. I finished the hunt a long time before I did the Patient in the Desert event. It stinks if that's the thing you sold, because without finishing that event, you can't get back into Barheim, and you can't get Zalera. I'm sad for you!

I guess I don't have to say that I do the side quests. I'm four beasts from finishing the Hunt Club, I've obtained the rank of Knight of the Round in Clan Hunts, and I've gotten four optional espers, and I've done a bunch of other things as well. I like them; they're fun, and they can add some layers to the story. Plus, a lot of them are great excuses for grinding. I think the only thing I probably won't finish is the cockatrice hunt. I don't think I can chase that last cockatrice through Rabanastre anymore. I tried sneaking up on it, like the guide suggested, but it's just not working. I'm frustrated.

I just started the fishing minigame (what is with the Japanese and their fishing minigames, anyway?!) Also frustrating, but I haven't gotten frustrated enough to abandon it quite yet.

I feel your pain. :(

Before I wised up, I sold all my ghysal greens and then ended up far away from where I wanted to be, or any teleport crystals, and couldn't get a ride on the chocobo I came across because I didn't have any greens to feed it. I had to walk, and felt like an idiot. It got easier after I got chops in Archades, because they show up on the loot list, but you can't sell them, so I put everything I don't want to sell above the chops now as sort of a dividing line.

I figured that since they don't let you sell things that you need I could sell everything else.  Didn't think that I'd ever need any of those items since the majority are useless.

That's a bummer indeed! I also wonder why they let us sell it, but it is probably so that we don't know that it is important and for secret stuff. Also once we sold it but still want to do that quest, we'll end up playing again anyway... lol

Well I'm definatly not doing every side quest in Final Fantasy XII. I practically stopped playing it after I finished the game, as I got pretty bored and was just done with it. I don't feel there's much point for me to go back unless there was something really significant worth doing like a secret pathway dialog like the ones in Final Fantasy VII with Vincent and his mother, and of course who couldn't forget the Zack and Cloud scene from Seph's Mansion?

It's like when I'm comparing a Final Fantasy game to Grandia.

Sidequests gives a lot of value in most Final Fantasy games unlike the Grandia series where there are only one or two sidequests and they're not that too lenghty to pull you out of the main quest.

And speaking of Sidequests, both Valkyrie Profile 2 and Star Ocean: Til the End of Time are one of those Square Enix RPGs that have a lengthy sidequests (Seraphic Gate and Sphere 211)

Good point there! I also like when there is a bunch of sidequests to do, like Chrono Trigger had for example. They weren't only to get items, but they also developed the characters and the story (like Lucca's past, for example. That was simple but awesome).

yes!  if i don't do everything in a SE game, i feel like i've missed a lot!  it's just annoying when you're trying to do a sidequest that's reallly really hard, that's a little annoying.
