Of all Square Enix games, which game had the best set of characters in you opinion? Also, when you play a game, what are you looking for on the characters (if you are)? Personalities? Background depth? Charisma? Great character design?

I love dearly two game character sets, FFVI and Chrono Trigger. But overall, in my opinion, FFVI had the best crew. I loved mostly everybody's main theme songs (like Shadow's awesome theme). The characters felt so 'human', and especially with this new GBA translation, the dialogues gave them so much more depth and understanding.... I felt like each character was someone I actually knew and cared for. I was so happy when I replayed it again now with the GBA and when Gau appears, start that funny scene where he keeps calling Sabin "Mr. Thou!". I can't forget Kefka's insane laugh and lines. Can't help but feel bad with Terra's problems and Cyan's loss. I can't help but to fall in love all the time with the Opera Scene.... and so on.

I can say pretty much the same experience with the Chrono characters, except that they were fewer and Chrono just don't speak, so he doesn't give us the impression of being someone, since this character was supposed to be like the player.

When I play most games, one of the first things I notice is how the characters are made, how charismatic they seem to be, how nice is their design and so forth... but really, the thing that grabs my attention the most, is the ability of the characters feel 'alive' and charismatic, giving us the feeling of actually caring for them.

Just like you, I think that FF6 has one of the best set of characters, I have a preference for Locke but all really love all the others. Kefka, wow, he's so awesome and I'll always remember when he said "Son of a submariner!".

Now transformed into "son of a sandworm".... lol. I just don't understand why did they change to this particular line XD And about Locke, yeah he's a nice character!

I think my favourite characters have to be the cast from FFX, though I also really liked the characters on FFIV and VIII.  Anyone else really like the characters on 8?

Son of a sandworm... k...

For the FF8 characters, well, I don't like FF8 and the characters are in the game ^^. I never finished it and I don't think I will.

For me, it'd have to be the cast of Xenogears...maybe just because I was drawn into the story so much...
I also liked Crono and gang because they were all from different time eras, and weren't all humans either. A lot of diversity in the characters of Chrono Trigger

Yeah I have to agree with your Xenogears opinion... this is the game with the best storyline (in my opinion) and had wonderful characters. But still I think FFVI and CT surpass... but this is just in my opinion!

Definitely one of the best FF's there is, IMO & yes, I loved the characters. I have to say, though that just because I am playing it more recently, I love the characters of Romancing Saga:MS. They are so cute (little chibi-style characters) and some of them have great personalities too. I love Claudia the most :)

FF VIII.  Even the characters that nobody really uses or cares for(Selphie, Quistis) I still liked.  Geez, I am addicted to the game!

Yeah! But no wonder! It seems to me that FFVIII is THE Final Fantasy which people or hate or love... it is hard to find people who thinks in-between those feelings... at least that's what I think.

I say FFX,FFIV, and FFVI.

They all had great characters. They all their own opinions about the decisions the main characters made, and the main characters had a lot of conflicts too.

Yeah, you mention about the main characters having conflicts and actively participating in the storyline. It seems to me many old-school rpgs had the main characters that wouldn't say a word nor anything... that always ticked me off! XD Among the ones you cited, FFX, for whatever reason for me, just doesn't have as much impact on me...

I hear what you're saying, but that was the time-period where the silent heroes were always really cool. FFX, I liked the characters around Tidus(him a little bit). It was a big impact to me because FFX was my very first FF game.

Oh I see! I'm pretty sure that many people's first game have a big impact and end up on their favorite list (which is the same with me, FFVI was my first FF game and I consider it the best FF out there yet).

FF6!!!! (Look at my avatar). Even though that game had such a huge cast, they were all still able to have great character development and real problems that showed through. There was no one single main character. They were all important. There were so many memorable moments in that game within the characters...Celes and Locke, the Opera Scene, Terra's path to self-discovery and self-acceptance, Cyan's losses and learning to move on. And of course Kefka! There isn't a better villain than Kefka - he is definitely the most twisted-minded absolutely insane bad guy in any game. I could go on and on. This cast of characters seemed (to me) to filled with the most human emotion.

yeah I gotta go with FFVI on this but I also like the characters from FFVII and FFVIII. Other than that the characters have been average at best. From what I've seen lately the characters in blud dragon or any other rpg set for release in the near future seem to lack interesting characters however I do like the characters in white knight.

The only character I really have liked since these ff games were released is auron other than that there has not been any really cool characters which takes alot out of the ff experience if you ask me. Part of the reason of wanting to level up is because I took interest in the characters. Hell how many people have ever leveled up a cait smith or a quinta to like level 60? Most people don't level up those characters because they possess enough interest in people and are just not that well liked. This really creates a problem when you have a whole cast of characters that you just don't like because you don't want to level up with them and you just don't give a damn about them or their story (sounds alot like DQ8 for me).

Exactly! That's one of the main points of FFVI, the villain is non-sense and actually does the bad stuff. I mean, who didn't get ticked off when he really poisoned virtually everyone in Doma?

Yeah! He was plain crazy! I mean crazy to a new level. People like Sephiroth because he's attractive, and not because of what he really did, because compared to Kefka, it was nothing.
