There's no way I'm playing it then. I'm already extremely mad at my boyfriend because he got WoW and he can't stop playing that even though he says the oposite. He said he's at level 38. How long does it take to get to that?
[QUOTE="Somegamer"]On WoW, level 38 takes a long time to get to. He must be truly addicted.Nimroc
Well, it doesn't really take very long if you use the time right while playing.
There are those who have reached lvl 60 in just some days.
First rule of the MMO. Prepare to be addicted. I played Final Fantasy XI from the time it launched in NA to the time I had to go abroad to study (just over 18 months). Final Fantasy XI is not a demanding game (hardware wise), anybody with decent specs will be able to run it and should you want to see the game as well as test your system then I couldnt reccomend anything better than the Final Fantasy XI benchmark v2.0.
Now Final Fantasy XI is amazing. I loved the game so much and it really took me a lot to leave it (and finally cancel my subscription this past January). The hook besides wanting to further your character are of course the people you meet and make friends with. The story is really great and just gets better with each expansion (Chains of Promathia was just excellent). Really cinematic MMO with beautiful graphics (especially considering its age). There is an amazing sense of adventure to be had and anybody who says you cannot do anything without high level friends doesnt know what they are talking about.
Its important to note that this was also my first true MMO experience (it was a Final Fantasy title and I had to have it). Its not without its flaws, but there is enough fun to be had to overlook these. Really I could go on about the game none stop, so YES its worth it, provided you can pace yourself and dont get carried away. Axel is of course talking about the extreme cases and that happens in every MMO and some other online games (counter strike anybody) so its not like that will happen to everybody. I'd be glad to answer any specific questions about the game (I reached level 74 out of 75 and had 2400 hours gameplay so ask away about the details).
The story progresses through missions, although only the first two can really be done alone. Beyond that you will need a party (unless your insane and want to give yourself an IMPOSSIBLE chanllenge). The game focuses on team work so you might as well get used to the idea. No soloing in this game (and no jumping, ala World of Warcraft) and creating good community. It went a little downhill after about a year after I joined but was still far superior to World of Warcraft in my opinion. Anyway missions progres the story and you are the protagonist (with cinematic in game cutscenes). It all revolves around crushing evil and forcing back the unleashed horrors. There is tons of back story and lore so you can really get lost in it.
The game has a lot of tedium though whether it be farming (aka repeatedly killing mobs for items to sell), camping Notorious Monsters (aka, challenging others to get and kill rare monsters for highly valuable drops) and of course leveling (which I enjoyed, but which takes on a new sense of tedium if you dont enjoy your party or the people you are with and your bound to come across some bad people...). Well like I said I could go on forever about the game, you can do so much in it and there is so much to see. I loved being a high level and working towards it too. But again it is time consuming and like any MMO (and to a lesser extent regular games) there is risk of addiction.

It DEPENDS on how he is playing the game. When the stress test launched my brother reached level 25 and I reached level 18 in under a week (around 5 days). Some people leveled to 60 during this period to get in closed beta at the stage.
Once I got the game I reached level 20-ish in under 2 weeks. My brother has quit World of Warcraft after the tedium and people got to him (he was 60, with epic gear and epic mount) (not to mention he enjoys life more now... teehee). World of Warcraft is an easy to game to level in, people before 10 being doable in a couple of days. Then about a level a day from 11 to 30-ish and a couple of days per level onwards. It all depends on how he is playing but since he is half way to end game I would say he is a little addicted although it could be the incentive of getting a mount at 40 that keeps him going. Anyway, its good to take some breaks once in a while, otherwise he could be really hooked and I should know how many hours you can dump in an MMO.

So you are saying that WoW has an ending? I thought the opposite. Well I'm kinda relieved then, because it really bothers me having free time like this past spring break and he didn't want to do a thing with me because of it. So of course my mood is pretty down. Regardless, I'm still thinking I'm not playing FFXI.... maybe some distant day when I'm retired lol.

Force him to go out! As to MMOs having an ending, its a yes and a no. Once you've reached the level cap have all the best equipment and so forth you could consider the game finished. The thing is quite a few people will stick around either waiting for the next big thing (expansion packs or more updates) or just tweaking things (more gear).
Once you've reached that level cap there are usually only a couple of things to do. That involves doing dungeons for better gear or player vs player fights.Of course you could go on for months. You really have to be the one to decide when the end comes. Its ALMOST like life. You could have nothing to do, but you would still just keep on doing things. Same with an MMO, you can have nothing to do and just wander the vast world that exists, talking to people and the like. The worst problem with MMOs is the fact that most people you are interacting with and everybody you play with are REAL people. This creates a relationship which may be hard to break. Its like how can you hang up on a person in the middle of a conversation? You cant, not often at least.
Again, you would be surprised how addicted people get because they want that one belt of awesomeness + 1 or something else. My brother was a rich, high ranked player on World of Warcraft. He got tired of all the people though, some of the people in his guild were getting on his nerves and he just couldnt continue. He has continued to play, but with a girlfriend recently he has reduced the amount of time he does drastically. You see the addiction of an MMO is something you could write a very long essay about. Its a very fine line between fun and addicted repetetive chores. I am looking forward to some upcomming MMOs because I love the community and massive worlds to explore. That being said I know the absolute time sinks they are.
At my peak I was playing over 12 hours of Final Fantasy XI in a row. This was during my gap year when I had very little socializing to do besides work. I am thankful to University for breaking the trend. Really you'll want to make sure your boyfriend doesnt get too entrenched. The further up the ladder you go the more time is needed. (for example at level 60 in World of Warcraft you can spend 3 to 6 hours getting raid groups together and completing dungeons... nowhere near as bad as some of what is required in Final Fantasy XI). Again sorry for making this so long, but like the massive expansive worlds of MMOs, there is a lot to be said about the games.
Thanks a lot for your insight Arath, I appreciate. I'm glad because after I read all this I'm pretty happy with my offline RPGs, which have an ending. I stopped reading american comics, my favorite one, Spider Man, because it was neverending. I will probably be dead and they will still be telling stories about him. That's why I got into mangas, closed stories you can enjoy and you will know you won't have to spend money every month of your life to reach a conclusion. That's how I see now those MMORPGs, you pay monthly fees to chat with other people, on the offline rpgs I enjoy a nice storyline (which is why I like RPGs in first place). I just hope he finishes this game and doesn't end up getting another one though. Actually he was addicted to Halo 2, now this...
