I spoke with ffxjunky, and it was decided that this topic could benefit members of the board who would also like an opinion on certain MMORPGs, especially Final Fantasy XI, so it is re-opened for business. For all those who can give indepth responses into both games and can compare the faults and good aspects of the games, please go right ahead. To give a brief opinion because I by no means mastered either game, I found World of Warcraft to be a bit more accessible to the casual player because one can play for short bursts and still feel like they accomplished something. Final Fantasy XI is the MMO for the very dedicated. You will have to spend a lot of time on it to accomplish all of your goals. This by no means makes it bad, it just requires a good amount of attention and time to get the most from it. Everyone who has expertize and an indepth explanation or comparison, please comment. Flaming will not be tolerated and a few word posts are not acceptable. Look forward to reading your posts.

I have both and i prefer ffxi over wow for several reasons.  While wow is more action oriented and thus more fun for a lot of people, it is also extremely easy and most of the time you dont get that gratification of completing a quest as you do in ffxi.+ i got to lv 40 in 2 weeks:( and i know alot of poele who made it past tahtalot sooner than me.  The only way to make wow harder is to join a pvp server, but then u get the lv 60 rogues who camp towns and gank lowbies, which is never fun. on the good side of wow though u can join raid groups and have massive battles against horde or alliance players, and most of the classes are fun to play. I would recommend wow for a person just getting into mmo's or for poeple who like pvp, but other than that i would go with ffxi.  Now ffxi is a more traditional mmo, so in that since it isnt as action packed as wow is, and it is much harder.  Because of this it requires actual tactics and strategies in early and later lvs. While wow reccommends teamwork, ffxi demands it, as much of the quests are impossible to solo unless you are a much higher lv than the monsters.  ffxi is also much more unforgiving which is why i guess people get turned off by it.  if say a warrior vokes at the wrong time during a tough fight, the healer will most likely end up dead, and in turn the rest of the party.  it requires more precision and cooperation than wow, which is why i think it is more rewarding when it happens. but it also gets frustrating when someone gets your party killed by aggroing 2 monsters or not using the right abilities. so in this since the learning curve is higher and u wanna make sure u know what you are doing. and also you can be any class withough having to create a new character which is good for people who arent sure what they wanna be. downside is though that they charge for each character created, and as stated before it isnt nearly as action packed as wow.  but overall it is much more rewarding to the player, and thats why it has so many dedicated fans.

Excellent response. Now is anyone willing to speak on behalf of WoW being a better game?

well, i don't thnik it's better overall, but then again im a FF fantasy, hard not to be biased towards FFXI, but WoW has got nice character movement, for example if there's a ledge, the character would just jump down or summat, but in FFXi, you'd have 2 find another way down

the bit when u die in Wow also seems better, the whole being a ghost thing is kwl, dammit, now i lost my train of thought, and cant decide which is better

If I could afford to play MMORPG's (I play Guild Wars, but what can you expect from a game that hasn't got a monthly payment? Crap on crap.), I'd probably play FF XI, I've heard WoW isn't very good, adn this is from a friend who has had experience with it.

But all the classes in XI really seem enjoyable, especially that Puppeteer class in the upcoming/newest expansion. Makes me want it even more.

well, I have no experience with XI, but after playing wow for a couple of weeks, I'm seriously considering getting it, and after WildArms567's indepth comment, I suspect it will be a more rewarding game for me. It'll be a couple of months before I do anyway, so I'll have ample time testing wow. it might pick up in fun-factor as I level up though. Still, for me, it simply didn't engage my curiosity and intellect the way previous, non-mmo FF's did. It is fun playing against other people, but still... I have, as is required, payed for the additional month of playing time in wow, besides the one included when you buy the game, so I'll have a couple of months to test it, but if I find it still lacking, I'll try XI instead. thanks again to WildArms567 for his comment, it really helped making my mind up...

I have WoW, And its an ok game, not the best, But sense I've played it I've really wanted to play XI, the only problem is I dont know If its for Win 98, Sense its some what new it probably isnt, which means I would have to buy the hardware to upgrade my PC to 2000 or XP (thats about $150) Then I'll have to buy the game ($40 or so) and pay monthly fees. Its just to much money, But if I had enough, I would much rather have XI then WoW

althought paying puts me off, i still have to choose ff11, since there are 4 expansions (i think the chocobo raising is the new one), and the game has got to be the best longest online game ever

ive been playing ffxi for alittle over 2 years now. and just to give you a slight idea of it how tough or long it can be here are my lvls: dark knight (main job) 53, warrior 34, thief (sub job) 30, red mage 25, samurai 20, dragoon 20, paladin 18, black mage 17, ninja 15, white mage 12, ranger 10, monk 7, beastmaster 7, summoner 3, bard 1, im rank 5, and have done well around 200 quests easily. thats all with 55-56 days logged in. i havent gotten the new expasion yet so i dont have puppetmaster, corsair, or blue mage.

this is a game for serious mmo players. the ability to loose experience points and down lvl can make this game aggrivating. since i began playing ive died 24-26 times, so thats not something im too worried about. quests and missions are hard. i mean really hard. but an hour in the jeuno (the biggest city) and you can have up to 3 parties allied to do something. linkshell (a guild) members are even more then happy to help, this really helps when trying to do certain quests. just with the ffxi and the expasion rise of zilart it is expected for the average gamer to take a year to complete everything, and now there are 2 expasions on top of that. this game really isnt meant for single player action. now im not experienced with wow but i know a few people that play it and have watched. if you want to be able to lvl by yourself rather quickly and have an easy time playing then get wow. ffxi is designed for you to get out there with other people. sure you can reach 75 (highest lvl to get) in a rather fast amount of time if you know people and dont have a life. now i could keep going on about this game but im not. if you are serious about mmos and want something that will take some time then seriously look into ffxi. there is also RF (forget what it stands for) its a pvp mmo that looks really good that is out. come august archlord comes out. im not sure if that is strictly pvp or what, but it looks good as well. ive actually thought about quiting ffxi and going to archlord depending on what the game play is like.

WoW does require alot of teamwork and is required for alot of things. like in instances if someone isnt doing their job ur grp is basically dead and this does apply to low lvl 15-20 instances also. i find it just as hard in wow and FFXI i have played both and i like WoW better becuase of the combat. I think they offer the same basically except WoW does a better job at it. and if the warriors aggro the wrong person or dont hold or use the wrongs moves ur grp is in trouble becuiase is all over the place then everyone dies becasue the healers cant heal everyone. the PVP and PVE is so in depth. i am a FF freak but i have to give it to WoW. some of the basic quests are easy which u only need 1 person but there are plenty of elite quests that require a grp and when u get to higher lvls it takes 10, 20, 40 ppl to take on these dungeons and they require alot of teamwork. and lvling to 40 in 2 weeks is very fast u must have played non stop and it takes a lot longer to go from 40-60 than it does 1-40. then u also need to work on getting ur good equipement and there is also the PVP battlegrounds and gining rank in those to get ur PVP armor and weapons. the game is just more in depth than FF but they are both good. there arent as many classes in WoW as there is in FF but u can customize ur classses in 3 main branches in any way. like witjh mages there is fire, forst and arcane and u get 51 talents points to spend in thoese and u can do any combination and make a custom player for u basically. so u can be a fire/arcane, frost/arcane, frosrt, fire, arcane or any combination and it also depends on ghow much talent poijnts u put in each. u could put 31 in fire 20 in arcane ur 20 in fire 31 in arcane it just depends on what u like. and WoW doesnt need all the expansions because with their major patches every 3 months just about they add a lot of new features like new dungeons, armor, items, and quests. so u are basically getting mini expansions for free over time.

Well, Let's see. I have played both games for 1+ year, with about 85+ days played on FFXI and 75+ days played on my WoW main character. I would personally recommend WoW, if you don't have much time to play. Because you'll be spending A LOT of time on FFXI, and I mean A LOT. First of all, once you reach level 10+ you'll need to form a group in order to progress any further in the game, something that isn't always easy. I've had to spend 6 hours on forming a group once, and I'm not kidding! However, usually it doesn't take that long to get a group together. In WoW you can solo all the way to 60, which is quite nice if you don't have time to sit around and hope you'll be able to form a group. On the other hand, you'll get to know more people in FFXI since you have to group all the time. Atleast it took me a while to get to know anyone in WoW, because I didn't really group much before level 60.

When it comes to endgame content, I believe WoW has more to offer. In FFXI, I believe, you can pretty much only hunt HNMs and stuff (correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't make it to endgame cause I played so many different classes), which are basically strong monsters that require a big group of players to take down. WoW offers a lot of exciting 20-man and 40-man instances, where you'll be fighting lots of epic battles against exciting scripted bosses. If you're not really into PVE, you can also try out the battlegrounds to kill other players.

I think both are really good games, but I would personally take WoW over FFXI any day. The leveling in FFXI simply gets too boring, well it did for me, anyway. I would highly recommend casual gamers to go for WoW, since it doesn't require nearly as much time. The endgame instances in WoW does, however, require some time though.
