I bought DQ8 and got the demo and was really excited.  The game looks and feels great IMO but for some reason i felt as if i really wasnt playing an FF in the classic sense. Im not sure if this is a good thing or not but i wanted to hear some other peoples opinions on this.

It's definitely a fresh, new experience. And I'm glad to say it is somewhat straying away from the tried (many...many times)  battle system, and doing something innovative and exciting. Yet at the same time I could clearly tell that I was playing a Final Fantasy game. The enemies, the enviroments, the Espers, the magic, everything had a Final Fantasy feel to it. I think the demo itself was a great success in showing the battle system and how it works. Some peole think the demo was a dissapointment because it didn't show much, but I think Square-Enix didn't put much into it on purpose, it was kind of a "here is what you're getting, we thought you'd like to have a small taste of it" kind of thing.

But rest assured, the battle system is much more deep than it seems in the demo. The License system, the gambits (which are customizable down to the very single spell your allies cast, not just turn "on or off" like in the demo), the Espers, and the magic are all boosted to extreme levels. You can definitely see this in some of IGN's, Gamespot's, and 1UP's videos, which you can view by accessing the FFU's homepage.

That saying is flawed in so many different ways. Why? Because people want something new, fresh, active. They tried and true system is great and all, but the majority of the fan base is getting tired of it, including myself. Running around, getting into countless random battles, and sitting there hitting the "X" button just doesn't cut it anymore. So, in a way, it is broken now. Because we've used it so many times, it's worn out, tired, done. I think XII's system is a breath of fresh air, a big one too.

I've played it quite a few times now and its pretty good, though I am really liking the newer battle system, cause the old stay in one spot and wait your turn is getting old, so the moving around and picking attacks is way more fun to do.  Then there's always the CG scenes to watch :D

I agree with wat someone said...that statement is flawed..it may not be "broke" but the thing that has had us all coming back is the new storylines and the innovations. Im all for innovation and I especially liked in the demo how there were things like "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" sorta things.  Also the magic and summoning was done well, and the whole system seemed to remind me more of FFXI than of FFX or its predecessors.

I thought it was great. It didn't have the whole FF feel yet because it was a demo but I felt that it hit the spots it needed to keep me hyped untill it's release.

Square have always changed their battle system so why are people making such a fuss about it this time round? If they kept it the same all the time I'm sure I would get bored quickly.

Eh, well I guess SE has always just kind of "tweaked" something in the system in past games. I mean, the only other one I can think of where it was drastically changed was X, and even that wasn't that big of a leap. Here, they are changing the whole structure and throwing the old one out the window pretty much, which is perfectly fine with me, but some other people are a bit more closed minded than that.

Hmm this system reminds me more of the Chrono Trigger system, and that worked quite well. if ppl are too close-minded to innovation then their basically buying the same game except with a different plot. which isnt *bad* cus i enjoy em but lil innovations along the way are nice to have.

Well the FFVIII battle system was a major difference from previous games - no MP!

Ya w/e change they make to the battle system they really cant go wrong as long as they put effort into it. I mean the system in 8 was a great system but ppl moaned about it b/c they were too lazy to draw from ppl. Also in.....wat one was it when they had 3 ppl? 4-6? cus i know they just to have 4 ppl and that change worked well. But w/e if they put effort into it will be great imo

Ooh, I did! I remember I was very skeptical about this game when I found out that they were going to change the battle system. But once I gave it a chance, it was awesome! FF needed something new and fresh like this. Although, I must say, there is one thing that I hope they'll change. When in battle (you know how you're running around, not turn-based or anything), if you're not really facing the enemy and they attack, they really shouldn't be able to hurt you (but they can). Because that kind of defeats the purpose of changing the battle system in the first place! Otherwise, the battle system flowed really well. And it's still got that FF feeling to it, the type of magic, the outlandish characters, and the summons, it's all very FF. I am definitely looking forward to it!!

I thought it was a welcomed change to the battle system of the game.  I don't know why you would want to turn it off cause its reallly good.

I only bought Dragon Quest VIII for the demo. And I'm glad I did. Haha, I play the demo more than I play DQVIII itself, I just don't like DQ games... So I'll just have to keep pressing the x button during the tuorial in the real game. Except when they ask me to do stuff..... Man I love the battle system in XII. I actually think it is so much easier to use than the regular pick a command and watch as they go to the enemy and hit it and then run back. That's pretty weird why I think that......... But I really hate how you have to use your max Mp to summon the espers. And the Espers aren't that great. Are Shiva and/or Ifrit Espers? Or is it just all new ones?

It seems amazing but the in-gameplay is kinda disapointing, the graphics arent very good when you control it and the spells look kinda lame. But the cutscenes are amazing.

I agree with you. Besides, I didn't think the graphics were bad. And remember, it got perfect tens from Famitsu, that's gotta say for something. I'm definitely looking forward to it. Hopefully it'll be better than X and X-2 (not a big fan). I loved the demo.

Yeah, thye don;t look nothing to special, except for the cutscenes, but the gameplay is what gets me anyways, and it has very good gameplay.  a bit different from what I've been use to in FF games, but its gonna be a great one.
