I think that, honestly, Final Fantasy will do one of two things. 1) Square-Enix will get tired of putting numbers on like "Final Fantasy 100" or 2) Final Fantasy will end whenever video games end. Really, I think those are the only two options. Obviously there is one other "hidden" one, but it's one that will never happen, when Final Fantasy doesn't sell anymore, but that's just crazy talk...
Wel land Square-Enix could lose money and not be able to make games, but then they;d have to not be selling games or having the CEO's and stuff stealing money or sumtin.
I think Square would not need to stop the FF series since it is not a continuing storyline so it's easy to continue the series. The only way I think FF will stop is if the series goes downhill and ends up getting repetative and boring.
Axel covered the possibilities pretty well there. There are only a couple of potential solutions. What we must understand though is that Final Fantasy is a BRAND name, not the definition of the game behind it. Every Final Fantasy is a NEW RPG, just with insane production values and usually damn good to boot (in great part due to the production values). Thats it.
If Square-enix were suddenly to create a new BRAND and give it the dedication and resources it does to every Final Fantasy, then that new line could easilly replace it. So whats my point? That Square-enix will keep on making Final Fantasy titles as long as that name is a powerful brand name and with brands like Coca Cola, Ford, Roles Royce having continued for over 100 years there is no reason to believe the same wont happen with Final Fantasy. The numbers can be recycled, they are a strong part of the series, but its the name that has a lot of the pull to it. Look at Kingdom Hearts, they are pushing it because they want it to be a powerful brand and it will be. I am pretty confident by the time Kingdom Hearts V rolls around it will be a mix of more than just Square and Disney IPs.
Ok, let's take a quick look at everything ... they are actually (I estimate) 20-30 FF games .... that's pretty much! People usually look only at the main series numbers. From now on, with the upcoming OVER capacities of the PS3, Square-Enix will probably only make 2 main-series games on the PS3, maybe 3. They will then continue on the PS4 (or whatever it's name will be) where they will again make 2 or 3, & then to the PS5. That put usin 2016 (or more) with a maximum of FF XVIII ( 18 ) ... & I don't see any problem ... Square could go on until PS10 and it would be a maximum of FF XXXIII . Where the fun ends is when they will have to make a story too much alike another. Do you imagine? since FF I to FF XXXIII they will be an amount of about 230 characters!!!! Who have to be different?!? That's a tough job but since Squaresoft & Enix, the two best RPG makers, have joined forces, they should be able to do it ...
I think they will make FFs until we will have the impression of playing another one in the serie (on the first look FF XII seems quite different but let's see for the upcoming ones).
if some type of global disaster does occur preventing square from continuing the ff series; then some other company will just slap a new name on it and sort of take over. and without square, alot of companies will see it as an opportunity to dominate the console rpg genre, which isnt a bad thing because there would be alot of ff-like games created.
