Nearly every non-RPG game SE has attempted to make has been pretty much of a failed experiment both on critical as well as on popularity levels

During the PSOne era, many of their "experiments" were inspired by famous franchises of the similar genre.

Examples, Brave Fencer Musashi is clearly inspired by Legend of Zelda. Ehrgeiz is also inspired from likes of Tekken and Virtua Fighter. Parasite Eve is a clear mirror image of Resident Evil with generous amounts of RPG present in it. Even the protagonist of PE resembled Jill Valentine in many ways.

The obvious reasons why some of the above mentioned games failed to do well is that despite taking inspiration from popular franchises, they did little to bring originality into the game and it felt as if you were playing a mediocre version of the much more better game.

The modern-day SE is attempting with Dissidia which appears to be quite different for a fighting game and hopefully it will break mold and inspire SE to attempt to make more games outside the RPG genre.

I thought Musashi was very good, and Parasite Eve obviously was their most successful attempt, but both are still RPGs, just not traditional turnbased J RPGs.

I thought Brave Fencer was a cool game. I also was a fan of The Bouncer which I believe was a SE game.

generally SE spin offs based on franchises tend to be bad, I mean while some of them are of a relative quality Square has never produced a nonRPG nearly as good as let's say FF6,7 KH etc

I would love to have a copy of Einhander. I played the demo on a Playstation Magazine disk back before it came out and thought it was great. Bushido Blade was a great game. Some people above are claiming that all of their non RPG games are derivative of other genre blockbusters but I'm not aware of a fighting game like Bushido Blade before or since (save BB2 of course). My friend and I loved playing against each other in BB. The lack of a damage bar and one hit kills provided a drama and tension not present in other fighting games. Being able to run around in the large stages was refreshing as well. I often feel that while other fighters might have lush graphical environments, the inability to explore and interact with them makes it feel useless.

Personally, I liked parasite eve. It wasn't half bad.
FF7: DC, however, ergh. I don't understand what was so great about it. It seemed a whole lot of "average" packed into one place.
