Okay, there's obviously a lot of heated debate around here about which Final Fantasy game was the best. Part of the reason we sometimes disagree is that we have totally different criteria in mind. With that in mind, here are the rules for this thread. 1) Post your favorite Final Fantasy game(s)... if you post more than one, rank them from best to worst. 2) Explain WHY you give it that ranking, and try to give it a minute's thought. None of this 'because it pwns' nonsense.

Okay, here are mine, the best is the first one... 1) FFVI. This game was amazing, not just for its time, but even to this day. Obviously the graphics don't hold up compared to more recent entries like FFX. There is no comparison in that respect. But in its day, FFVI pushed the graphical boundaries of the SNES as far as they could go to amazing effect. Not to mention that FFVI was really the proving ground for the "high technology meets magic" type of theme that would go on to make FFVII so popular. The music in this game was also amazing. I've recently been listening to the Black Mage's rendition of Dancing Mad, and that has got to be one of the most powerful songs from the entire franchise. Also, the cast of characters in this game was HUGE, which allowed a lot of flexibility in strategy, and the number of espers (summons) was also HUGE which is always cool. All of these elements are extremely important to a good gameplay experience, but ultimately what makes FFVI stand out about the rest was its story. The fact that the earth gets rocked by armaggedon-like forces half way through the game and comes out of the event a completely different place was awesome. Any FF fan who has never played FFVI is really missing out. 2) Tied for second: FFVII and FFVIII. These games were extremely different in so many ways. I won't go into a lengthy explanation about how the graphics, music, and FMVs made the gameplay experience more immersive. Instead I want to just point up some of the strengths and weakness of each. FFVII undoubtedly had a great story, probably second best in the franchise by my taste, but there were things about the FFVIII story that I prefered. For one thing, the love story between Squall and Rinoa in FFVIII was probably the most well-developed romance in any of the FF games (maybe Tidus/Yuna comes close, but I didn't feel it). The junction system in FFVIII was also very cool, one of my favorite battle systems in any of the games, but overall I would have to say that the Materia system in FFVII was superior. I also got a kind of sick pleasure out of the Draw ability in FFVIII, but ultimately I would say that the battle system in FFVII was just more balanced and enjoyable. These two games carried over the excellent tradition of FFVI that I mentioned previously as the "high technology meets magic" theme, which I hope to see more in future FF releases. After FFVIII, things kind of went downhill, and while I continue to play the games I can't say that any of them were quite as enjoyable as the three I've ranked here.

Final Fantasy VII was the best FF..

the reason is simple..
it has the BEST storyline a FF game has..
it also has the best collection of characters..
also the materia and battle junction is the best in any FF..
the soundtrack is great..!!

FFVII was revolutionary.. fair enough the graphics werent as good as they couldve been but thats not what makes a game..
I think square understood the success and the fanbase of FFVII to make a sequel of the game as a movie and to make as much spin-offs as they are.. eg. FFVII: Dirge of cerebus and Crisis Core..

FFX

This is mainly because I thought it had one of the best storys and the best gameplay out of any of the Final Fantasies.  I just sucked me in to the story and before you knew it I was playing X-2.

Final Fantasy VII

I was captivated by it's story. I thought it was really creative and nothing had ever stretched my mind as far as this games deep plot.I loved the character models for everyone, even if they where a little clunky, and the backgrounds where bursting with energy. It created a bunch of characters which i consider favourites still today(Cloud, Rufus, Cait Sith). Sure the game poses no challenge till the Weapons but thats because of how fun the battles are and the excellent materia system which i customised in many different ways.

Kingdom Hearts(if this counts)

I put this here because there are additions to the story with FF characters, but again thats still just a small part of a mesmerizing experience.Engaging storyline which is faithfull to each Disney world, and excellent original worlds such as Hollow Bastion. Excellent cast of characters with the best voicework i have seen in a game. Great graphics and the best FMV i have seen to a game yet.

Final Fantasy VIII

I used to hate this game, but it took time for me to realise how great it is. Junctioning is a clever addition which adds more strategy to a fight. Although the story can seem to be all over the place, it is nicely packaged and leaves plenty of surprises.

Theres no FF i hate but these 2 and KH are my favourites.

Final Fantasy VI It really was a master piece. The story line was so great and it sucked you right in. You are a rebel faction against a faction of evil. The battle system was solid and ability system was good but what i liked best was he characters. Each character had their own important role even when they spred apart to all over the world. Throught the game you can get more in depth of who that preson is. The story had a sence of hopelessness but that you were not alone that made you want to continue. Also music was top notch and very enjoyable and did alot for what they had to use. I didn't get tired of any songs in the game even the battle theme.. Thats why even though i played it after 7 and up it was the best. You just cant beat a good story.

1) Final Fantasy VI

This game is the most underrated and best of all the Final Fantasy's that have been made. The graphics were amazing for the SNES and pushed it right to it's limits unlike a game such as Final Fantasy VII which did not push the PS at all and was rather second rate graphics. The music in this game was amazing, every song in this game I like. This is the pure example that music can make a game as much as some of the other attributes. I have found myself many a time humming to the tunes on the soundtrack. Masterpiece. Story was damn right the best story in a game ever yet alone in Final Fantasy. The large cast of characters all had their own unique personality and their really was no set main character. All the characters in this game have their own amazing back story and their development through the game really shows which adds so much and of course the wonderful Kefka is in this game, undoubtably the best villain ever. The gameplay is really the original fighting system but the real addition to this is the use of espers which was a fantastic new twist on the magic system. Not a lot Final Fantasy fans have played this game, many preferring to only play the 3-D FF's, but this is better than all of the 3-Ds and my favourite game ever. Play it if you alrady haven't!

FFVII

This is a game  (maybe one of the first) that made you really connect to character development. The story of Aeris dieing was powerful and even had stories of fans crying, protesting ect. When you involuntarily think and remember a character, like Cloud,Aeris and Sephiroth, that says something. When it first comes in your mind then you know its a masterpiece.  Character development is imo the reason why this is the best FFV. With all that aside I dont need to get into the great battle and materia system, with its awesome limit and summon presentations. I also think the story was excellant. The graphics arent the best but they are one of the first PS1 games. The music, story, battle system perfectly formulated into the character development makes it the best.

1) FFVII- I place this game first because this was the game that made me fall in love with the FF series. The story was mesmerizing and gameplay was excellent. The music for this game was also very innovative. It's AI (for monsters I thought was perfect). Some people found them to be tough, others pretty easy, but including the Weapons side quest made the game a perfect challenge. Side quests and mini-games were great for this game. The Gold Saucer was one place I had a very hard time stepping away from with the all the Chocobo Races, Battle Arena, and Mini-games.

2) FF Tactics- This game is truly the most underrated FF game of all-time. Since this came out shortly after FFVII, the hype for this game wasn't very big at all. But what this game great was an excellent story with innovative gameplay. It was one of those games that just made you think and plan out every action you take. The music for this game was also very, very good. There are so many options for this game, I spent over 150 hours playing this game and I could have spent more. It's one of those games that is difficult to get used to but as you play it more and more, it acts like nicotene, very addictive.

3) FFX- This game had the best music and side quests of any of the FF games. Blitzball was also very addictive to me and the ultimate weapons side quests were fun. This game did have some big flaws in it. Vocal acting and writing were somewhat weak, but did produce some great gameplay, innovating the "substitute" menu for FF. Definitely a worthwhile game that I spent over 200 hours playing and it was worth every minute. The sphere grid was very addictive for me.

Just so you all know, I've never played FFVI so that's why it's not on my list. From what I hear, it's a worthwhile game, but I just haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. It does appear to be a good game though.

FFIX - This is one of the most Underrated FF Games ever. The Graphics in it wernt all that good as its Predecessor FFVIII, but that was Intended. The Games Style would only Match those types of Graphics. The Sound on it was amazing, Every song was thought out very carefully, mixing them together with the Atmosphere at the Time, gave an Excellent Result. The Storyline was enough to hook anyone, with different scenes happening at the Same time. The Characters hooked me aswell. Everyone had a Different Personality, thus making them even more interesting.

FFVIII is my favorite FF to date.

This game really caught my eye the first time I actually played. It was so diffirent from other versons, It was like a new kind of game. First off the graphics were the best to date on PS, Plus the new way to custimize the charechters In the way that the player wishes through the Junction, This was a great new feture basically because It had never been used before. In addition to Junction, the story its self is reason enough to love this game, It had all the right elements, Romance, Action, And depth.

This is a tough questions.  However, i do think every individual ff have its' uniqueness, i can hardly rank each of them.  No one is the best.

FF I and II - (too old to mention it)

FF III and IV - most classic and fantasy

FF VI - best music and characters (not to compare with this gen's graphic)

FF VII - best story

FF VIII and X - best romance

FF X2- most funny and best custome

FFXII - best game play system

FF IX in my opinion is the worst.  I don't like the design of the characters that much. (Except Vivi, he is lovely)
