I don't know. All of the REALLY cool ones have drawbacks. And, if you wanted to be a mercenary, you might as well just be a SeeD member, even though they have a much longer job description.
If I HAD to pick, perhaps SeeD because they train you without being controlled by an evil organization like SOLDIER.

Anyways, of all your choices, I'd be a part of Avalanche. Living the free life, revolting against the powers that be, blowing things up and doing so amongst your friends while being able to check out Tifa and her huge rack every time we'd have a meeting at the 7th heaven. Not to mention, living in Midgar, if anyone ever tried to screw with you, you could have the option of unleashing Barret on them as revenge. Good back up indeed!
