Does VGChartz still correct their historical numbers to use NPD figures? Or do they use their own estimates? If the former, then VGChartz can still be used for historical data such as past months' sales. If the latter, then it's just a completely worthless site.mjarantilla

Exactly. What discrepancies occured this time which are so major that VGchartz is now useless? Persoanlly I think it is ok to use to get an idea of how things are selling in between NPD reports or to get an idea of worldwide sales. Its only useless for idiots that think that one console outselling the other by a couple of 1,000 units is significant.

vgchartz had 4.70 up before NPD came out. They were right on. Also, even if they're off 250k in a month, they still update their errors once they become known. It's dangerous to off of weekly or monthly sales from vgchartz as law because they only track a small percentage of gaming-dedicated chains, which can cause quite a discrepancy in many situations. I have never seen them off 250k in hardware for a console that only sells a couple hundred thousand monthly. Their hardware numbers for December, for example, were astonishingly accurate as far as the NPD group is concerned.

The PS3 and 360 actually sold about dead even in the first year. If you're thinking about the 10.4 million number that was announced, that was "shipped." Also, the PS3 was more expensive AND it had two current gen consoles to compete with in its launch year. It didn't do that bad, to be honest. Lems can't bash it, at least.

I will admit that the ps3 saved most of its great games for 2008 so the 360 might have had a better first year in terms of games (matter of preference) but it still sold just as many or more than the 360. Also take note that there is a massive Xbox 360 world wide shortage right now, along with the Wii. The only console in stores right now are PS3's, thats why they are selling an average amount now.

There are shortages in America, Australia and parts of Europe from my understanding. But Japan has no shortages at all because the 360 aint popular there.

ps3 has been outselling 360 by about 15,000/week for the last 2 months, now that the systems are the same price theres no reason not to get a ps3, and if you say there are no games then why cant i find enough time to play them all

You can buy an X360 on Amazon right now for retail (not the elite but including the Halo3 SE). Unless they just got shipments in then this is a good sign that there isn't any shortage.

NEITHER NPD or Vgchartz are accurate.

Vgchartz are just estimates

And NPD only tracks 70% of the market

But they are right with the 70% though.
