What are your top ten games that you are going recommend to any console gamer, who migrates to PC or gets his/her hands on it?

NOTE: PC Centric Multiplats can also be listed, the games that are a lot better on PC. For Example: Team Fortress 2 PC because it gets a lot of updates on PC, The Elder Scroll Games with Mods, Battlefield 3 with 64 players etc.

.

10. Total War: Shogun 2

9. Divinity: Original Sin

8. Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos

7. Crysis

6. No One Lives Forever

5. Company of Heroes

4. Freelancer

3. The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

2. Thief: The Dark Project

1. Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty

.

What about you?

Very few of those interest me, mostly due to their genres, but I'm not necessarily against trying them.

I can't think of any because I'm not sure if console gamers share my tastes. Beside, there are many genres which have already crossed between platforms.

I've seen the FPS genre cross into consoles along with strategy. Going the opposite way, I've seen fighting games and now JRPG cross over into the PC.

The only genre I haven't seen crossover from PC to console is comprehensive flight sims such as FSX.

If you wanna go back that far, there are many many more PC games worth playing - Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, X-Com, Diablo 1 & 2 etc etc. Back then, the console industry was completely separated from the PC industry, unlike now. As such, there was an entire era's worth of PC games worth playing

I assume the genre is strategy, and I will say that strategy games are made nowhere near equally.

That's why this list sucks. Some require very little thought to play and beat like Warcraft, but something like Total War or Company of Heroes is more along the lines of something that I'd avoid unless it's what you really really want in which case you'd be a PC gamer already.

The list should have either Starcraft or Warcraft (not both), but rather than the other strategy games it should have something like Sim City 4, or Roller Coaster Tycoon. Those games make me wet.

The Witcher also shouldn't be there. Great RPG, but not a showpiece of the genre.

30+ years of PC gaming and you include Divinity: Original Sin indie CRPG from last year and Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty when the first one is so much better?

Anyway I would include Max Payne 1 + 2, Deus Ex, Command and Conquer series up to tiberium sun, Gothic series and the dungeon keeper series (first one is much better). (Im aware there were some console ports but you have to play them on PC)

Edit: Some of your picks are still pretty good.

Edit2: what was the name of the sci fi submarine battle game?

Depends on their tastes.

The Boss

  1. Rise of Nations
  2. StarCraft
  3. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
  4. Age of Empires 2
  5. X-COM: UFO Defense/UFO: Enemy Unknown
  6. Wizardry 7
  7. Jagged Alliance 2
  8. World in Conflict
  9. WarCraft 3
  10. Divinity: Original Sin

That should provide plenty of variety between not only a variety of playstyles (some being RPGs, others being RTS, TBS and management games), but also from different eras

The Twitcher

  1. Freespace 2
  2. Thief 2
  3. No One lives forever
  4. Quake 1
  5. Doom 1
  6. Mount&Blade: Warband
  7. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
  8. Skyrim with mods
  9. Freelancer
  10. Iji

2 space sims, some ARPGs, some shooters, a first person action adventure, a sword and board action game and Iji, a grossly underrated platformer with metroidvania elements and a story that is determined by your actions.

The storyguy

  1. Planescape: Torment
  2. Gabriel Knight
  3. Homeworld
  4. Deus Ex
  5. System Shock 2
  6. Alpha Centauri
  7. Necromancer
  8. Grim Fandango
  9. Myst
  10. The Secret World

The SocialistSocialite

  1. World of WarCraft
  2. Dota 2
  3. Guild Wars 1
  4. Minecraft (PC version is that much better)
  5. Terraria
  6. Path of Exile
  7. Team Fortress 2
  8. StarCraft 2
  9. The Secret World
  10. CounterStrike

The reason I went with StarCraft 2 here instead of SC1 is because it might be a bit easier to find a game at their level in SC2. I would assume the average skill level of SC1 players is much higher than the average skill level of SC2 players.

Thief 2 is significantly better than the first one. Deus Ex is also missing--I'd replace Witcher with it. Swat 4 deserves a place as well.

Why? If it's console games you're interested in, I doubt these games would interest. Console gamers usually play games where you don't have to use your brain much.

Nice list.

@TheGreatGeneral:

Wanted to include Max Payne but it was either that or Warcraft 3. Decided to go with exclusive even though Max Payne is meant to be played on PC. It wasn't easy since MP is my one of most favorite games of all time.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to have missed out on that era of PC games at the time. It's so fundamental to my understanding of what makes a game good, especially of what games can be. If all you have is the last two generations of console gaming to base your understanding of gaming on, that would (I think?) really narrow down your expectations of what gaming is/can be.

I'd almost imagine that their idea of gaming would be centered around something completely trivial or a small facet like achievements or social networks / chatting. Like I said, I can't even imagine, but there must be people here, on GS, who have only that experience. That's just freaky, man.

RTS is the genre that really got me playing games on the pc. My only issue with them today is I simply don't have the time to play them--they are some of the most time intensive games out there.

@Heirren:

Yeah some strategy games like Total war needs a lot of time and planning but games like Company of heroes are pretty fast paced. On easier difficulties it sometime feels like fast paced action game. On higher difficulties you'll have to smarter to succeed. Something for everyone.

@Heil68:

Total war is difficult is to learn but reward is satisfying. The series is addicting as hell.

The list just alright. I would have recommended some console style games that aren't bogged down by a controller, outside of the normal "RTS". I would definitely list Arma. I have not played the newer one but ArmaII was pretty good. Reminded me of a far more elaborate old school Ghost Recon. The interface and game structure needed some work but when you get to the actual gameplay it is pretty good. Another series I'd recommend is the old Commandoes stealth games. RTS viewpoint crossed with point and click crossed with Lost Vikings--one of my absolute favorites pc game series.

I don't like RTS so I don't care about a lot of those games. Console-only gamers tend to disregard primarily PC-only genres like MMO, MOBA and RTS which are thriving on PC. That being said here's ten PC games I can think of (in no particular order) that console gamers should play:

  • System Shock 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Crysis
  • The Witcher series
  • Thief series
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (without a doubt the best competitive FPS right now)*
  • Team Fortress 2*
  • STALKER series
  • Half-Life
  • Diablo 2
  • King's Quest 6
  • Quest for Glory 4

*not true PC exclusives, but let's be honest, why the **** would you play the objectively inferior console versions?\

I do, because pc gaming is not what it once was. There are games that came out 15 to 20 years ago that are still great and have never seen any kind of console release.

So when asked to list only 10 games console gamers should play that are on PC this is the best hermits could come up with? lol this is why hype of PC gaming on this forum is so hilarious.

Now I am sure there actually are 10 really good examples of PC games that console gamers should play but given the fact that many of these lists not only contain only passable quality games but also multiplats, it says that console gamers are fine right where they are.

If console gamers were to suggest a mere 10 games every hermit should play their lists would totally embarrass the caliber of titles hermits dare suggest here.

I remembered, its called Aquanox and a new one is in the works. Maybe not the most prominet series but I very much liked it.
