I don't think any of those deserves to be on the list honestly. Each of those games has great art in it, but there's a huge diffrence between "having art in it" and being art itself. Bassicaly imagine a movie that for 8hours shows just a static image of Picasso's painting. Would you call this movie "art"? The painting obviously is art, but the movie itself isn't. Most games are the same, they're like this movie.
anyway those games don't look like art. and games aren't even ment to be art, just funkweeni
I value art in games more than gameplay itself, especially since i play RPG's/adventures mainly, a world that has amazing art style is my single most important aspect in any game

Exactly. Darwinia would be more of an art in itself, though I personally wouldn't risk calling it like that. Nevertheless it's a deconstruction, pastiche, and abstract retro-futurism all in one, that plays and transgresses many conventions.
Good to see Tim Shafer and Lorne Lanning are represented on that list. :)
Now show that list to Lorne and tell him to hurry up and create a new oddworld game asap.
I'd consider lots of games to be modern art. Some focus on art, some don't.
For example, Odin Sphere would be a game that most people would agree on.
I'd also argue games like Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill, Siren, Final Fantasy XII etc are artistic as well. Lots of games have artistic merit, not necessarily in the graphical department.

I thought it was gameplay...I mean story?Who cares? I don't want art, I want a game.Cherokee_Jacklol. so right. i love van gogh. am drunk enough to admit even deepest passions. but don't care about art when it comes to gaming, truly.
oddworld! so thats what the game was called! i remember playing it on my ps1 when i was young, liked it alot lol but lost it and didn't know the namekweeni
oddworld started out as pc game, i remember there was a pc/booth across the ebgames at my mall, but they had oddworld running on it, and this wasnt out for any other platform at the time.

not really. Looking at what you hype it;s obvious that ss long as it's fantasy, on 360 and preferablyt not coming to PS3 you will love it, no matter how absymal the art is.
Calling videogames art is the sillyest thing I have heard in a while. Stop talking videogames seriously. :|Aljosa23
Why? Some movies are considered art, some music is considered art, why not videogames?
It does after all take (an) ARTist(s) to develop a game.
Or do you not consider game developers artists?

Wha? A beautiful game in expense of the gameplay sucks though.:?
Calling videogames art is the sillyest thing I have heard in a while. Stop talking videogames seriously. :|Aljosa23If 50 Cent's in da club hood music is an artform gaming is definetly an artform. But it depends on the game of course. A game like Wii Play or the 10,000 movie cash in games are hardly art, but games with good procution values and engaging story (see: MGS) is definetly a kind of art. The problem is, most developers would rather rush a cheap product like "Wii Party Games" or "Dragon Ball: The Movie: The game" which is guaranteed to sell rather than a game with a high budget and careful development. While I don't like I see the logic, a company would rather sell a cheap cash in product to the huge casual base rather than an excellent and engaging game that only the minor hardcore base will buy. Also, the majority of pirates are "hardcore gamers". Developer would rather make something meh the casuals will eat up rather than an amazing game that will force them bankrupt.
I agree. Its a bit of a shallow article. But hell, its... Cracked.I don't think any of those deserves to be on the list honestly. All forms of media are considered art. Maybe you should look at the definition of art
who cares? if i want to look at art ill buy a picture, i get games to play gamesshadow_hosi
If I look at a picture it's because I like it, not because it is art.
If I play a videogame it is because I like playing it, not because it is art.
Doesn't mean I don't consider it to be art though.
I find it really dissapointing that to almost everyone here as long as game has "teh pretty pictures" it's art.Shows how primitive gaming still is as a mediumAdrianWerner
It isn't about "teh pretty pictures" for me, it's about the respecting the creative vision that some developers have.
But please describe 'art' for me if you don't think these should be considered art.
Pretty meh list for me. A lot of it seems to be "let's find games with unusual art styles and stick them up there." I would have added Deadly Creatures to that list. It's a normal looking game, so that probably disqualified it, but the game doesn't follow the rules of traditional story telling and offers a very unique perspective. To me that's a little more artistic than characters with disfigured heads and weird color palattes.

Art in a video game is the game as a whole, the gameplay, the environment, the story, the way the story is told. Just like a movie(except for the gameplay of course :P )
