Look at it objectively. The best selling SKU of the 360 is the elite which is just under 500 dollars, so that's obviously not out of many gamer's budgets. On top of that the PS3 has/will have the following advantages.

  • Vastly superior hardware (cell, blu ray, HDMI 1.3 etc)
  • More reliable hardware
  • More Advanced rumble AND limited motion control
  • Free online with a superior interface and dedicated servers

In addition we are seeing the first examples of multiplatform software that is as good as, or better than its 360 equivelant (Rainbow Sic, Oblivion etc). The exclusive games this year may be pretty poor (lol @ heavenly sword, motorstorm and lair) but next year we are due to see some SPECTACULAR titles that match anything on the 360 (heavy rain, FF13, White Knight Story, GT5, LBP etc) and unlike many of the "exclusive" games on the 360, we will not be seeing PC versions of said titles. With amazing titles titles like Bioshock also rumoured to be coming to the PS3 as well as few BIG exclusives from the likes of Bioware and Epic i think it's safe to say that thet the console wars are FAR from over.

If they do the $100 price cut this early, that just means they're desperate.  Good for us as a consumer, but bad for them because they'll be bleeding money with every sale

100 dollars would still make the console expensive, but I guess this is the situation that you have to see it happen to believe it. Though it would make it very tempting.

Sigh... I hate this whole Catch 22 situation. People moan when the PS3 is $600, and now people moan just as much when it's $500. Sony can't win with you people. What more do you want?

$500 is better than $600, but there's still no HDMI cable included (those things are expensive!!) and VF is still not playable online. There aren't that many games worth buying yet on the PS3 imo. The only one I can think of at the moment is Resistance.

A price cut would be great but I still don't think it's enough to get the PS3 to 360 levels, especially when the 360 is about to drop a few strafing runs of it's own...

I welcome a price cut, but I think the mass market will still see it as an expensive investement for a gaming console.

I doubt it'll have Wii levels of commercial success (what will except the DS?). But when people are buying Elite 360's so readily the PS3 becomes a SERIOUS alternative. The only problem is that the lineup this year is pretty weak but next year it should be amazing. We shall see what

well rumor has it that the elite oprice will drop to 399 while the premium drops to 349 and the core to 249.

At that point, it will come down to: where people buying the elite because they find $500 resonable and would thus consider the ps3 instead? or was the elite just a worthwhile purchase and a 399 price point is just gold?

that could effectivly stump the ps3 price drop if it was the latter.

well, for one they could've started by not shoving Blu-Ray down our throats, then it wouldn't need a price cut to begin with because it would be the same price as the 360.  Besides, I might actually consider getting one if the price drops, but still, it can't be good for profits

Even with a $100 price cut, it's still a bad price point for a console. Despite it being a pretty good deal for everything you get, most people buying a gaming console don't care and won't use most of the PS3 features - like Bluray. Besides, if PS3 drops $100, the 360 will also drop in price. With Wii sitting at the price to sell sweet spot and PS3 losing exclusives hand over fist, the only sales Sony has are from brand recognition.

wrong alot of people are forgetting that the only reaon the PS3 is expansives is becuase of the difficulty to make the blu ray diode and the cell but now they are becomeing increasingly easier to make before sony would loose close to 200 dollars on each console and now that the manufacturign costs are much cheaper that can stand to lower the price and still not loss that much

you opinion =/= fact.

You lik PSO has a better interface than XBL...

And can you really not afford 7 pennies a day to play XBL? the price isn't that bad, get over it.

And 360 games that go to the PC doesn't mean it's not exclusive anymore. MS still makes money.

More advanced rumble... Motion control...

The 360's that were unreliable were the launch systems. I haven't seen or heard of any elites having hardware problems.

come back to me when you have a real argument.

KAS3Y_JAM3Z

Even if Microsoft made money from 360 games going to PC (which they don't always) what the hell does this have to do with exclusivity? The fact Microsoft is raking in royalties doesn't make the multiplat status of software any less a reality.

Look at it objectively. The best selling SKU of the 360 is the elite which is just under 500 dollars, so that's obviously not out of many gamer's budgets. On top of that the PS3 has/will have the following advantages.

Most people are buying the Elite for use as a Media hub/center. While the PS3 does have some media-rich features (i.e. blu-ray) I really think the Xbox 360 has the edge.

* Xbox 360 has the ability to download lots of HD/SD digital content

* Xbox 360 can easily connect and stream content off Windows PC

* Xbox 360 will have a really good IPTV service soon. Microsoft has already entered the IPTV race.

Also, you're assuming that price is the main reason why the PS3 isn't selling. I really think it has much more to do with no attractive software. Right now the only good games out on the PS3 are avaliable on the Xbox 360, a cheaper console with better online. No good reason to get a PS3 right now.

  • Vastly superior hardware (cell, blu ray, HDMI 1.3 etc)
  • More reliable hardware
  • More Advanced rumble AND limited motion control
  • Free online with a superior interface and dedicated servers

I will address these point by point.

Point 1 - "Vastly superior hardware" doesn't mean anything if the games don't reflect this. Right now the Xbox 360 games are running faster and look better. The PS3 versions of Xbox 360 ports usually don't look as good and have serious issues with the graphics or framerate.

Point 2 - I have mixed feelings on this one. First of all, the PS3 has only been out in the wild for about 7 months at this point. It's not like people's PS3's don't brick at all. With the Xbox 360 you now have a three year warranty, which is stellar for a piece of hardware. If your PS3 bricks two years down the road, you're out of luck.

Also, the 65nm revision which is going to be implemented before the year ends will probably fix all of these issues. I'm pretty sure the Xbox 360 is going to be a very solid piece of hardware soon.

Point 3 - What do you mean, "more advanced rumble" ? Are you refering to the rumor that the PS3 is going to get touch sense? Really, I doubt we'll ever see that. Right now the PS3 does not have *ANY* rumble avaliable.

The motion sensing is a gimmick, obviously. That's why it's probably going to be dropped for rumble.

Point 4 - Free online, sure. However dedicated servers and better interface? Get real, Cow. XBL is the best online service avaliable. PSN is simply lacking many of the features that makes XBL so nice. Let's wait for Home to come out on PSN and see if it makes the online experience more cognitive.

There are more Xbox 360 ports that are worse than better. The only game that is considered better is Oblivion. Everything else is considered far superior on the Xbox 360.

In order for the PS3 to beat out the 360, the upcoming games are going to have to do better than match. They will have to be hands down better. While games like FF13 and MGS 4 are really anticipated, so are games like Halo 3, Bioshock, and Mass Effect.

We will have to wait and see which games turn out to be stronger.

If that's what happens with the pricing, then MS might as well nix the premiums. $50 more for what you get with the elites is well worth it. If the premiums were priced at $324 (right between the elite and core) then I'd be the proud new owner of a 360.

I'm not going to say Blu-ray is needed, but it's certainly making developers' work a lot more bearable. Kojima himself has already said that Blu-ray, let alone DVD9, may not be enough. Metal Gear Solid 4 could be the first game to use the bigger 50GB disks because of the huge amount of stuff he wants to pull off. Naughty Dog and Factor 5 are also saying that Blu-ray makes life a whole lot easier... hell, even Rockstar are praising it. There will be the rare occurrences where Blu-ray really is a necessity.

the bolded points are bad. The average consummer doesn't know or care about the hardware. It won't have any impact on sales

and we have yet to see any sort of rumble on the ps3. there isn't even a sixaxis with rumble released yet, or a game that can use rumble.

and just remember that M$ and nintendo can cut thir prices any time sony can

Price cuts will negate this argument in time. Time will also entail more ambitious games. Soon there will be quite the library of games which developers say benefit from Blu-ray (and an HDD as standard).

If they do the $100 price cut this early, that just means they're desperate. Good for us as a consumer, but bad for them because they'll be bleeding money with every sale hamstergeddon

That is true and I think it's time for a price cut anyways. I mean $600 for a console is ridiculous. And they cut their own stand alone Blu-ray player's price $400-$500 which means the price of Blu-ray is dropping dramatically, so I think $100 price drop for the console won't hurt them as much as when it was first released.

Sigh... I hate this whole Catch 22 situation. People moan when the PS3 is $600, and now people moan just as much when it's $500. Sony can't win with you people. What more do you want?

$400 price point

That would make the situation even worse. People will yell "desperate" more than they ever have.

But they'll buy it. Especially if Sony's got a strong line-up.

I'm going to buy it either way...For it to sell to the masses, IMO,it needs to be $400 or below.
