Hey everyone, I have the following rig

Intel i7-4790 (non-k)

16GB RAM (1333Mhz)

Geforce GTX 1080

SSD 750GB

Asus H81M-PLUS Mobo

Samsung T24C300 monitor

These are the average fps I am getting all on 1920 x 1080 and maximum settings

Mafia 3: 40-50fps

Gears of War 4: 90-100fps

Battlefield 1: 50-70fps

Battlefield 4: 70-90 fps

This issue I have is that people with much inferior cards like 1060 or 1070 or even 970 are getting better fps than I am? I don't get it? I have not overclocked anything and neither has any one i play against but they get much better fps than I do?

So my question is what would I need to upgrade in order to get better fps or in fact have better performance than people have a GPU which are inferior. Now I get it that GPU is not everything but my i7 is not that bad is it? Should I really upgrade my CPU to say i7 6700k or i7-5820k to get better performance and may be aspire to play 4k in the future? Or simply buy faster ram like 2 x 8GB 1600 Mhz or higher (btw what is the highest I can use with this mobo lol)? Please let me know what I need to upgrade or what I need to do to improve my fps? I get when people say anything above 60 is fine which I get it but when other cards which are not as good get higher fps it makes you wonder wtf is going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can upgrade your CPU, but the difference will be marginal. Also you can get faster ram along with your mobo + cpu combo. Again, this will have a marginal impact as well (maybe 1 or 2 fps).

Also thread may get moved.

@fatguyslim: Id update your drivers or wait for fix. Check your setting and make sure you dont have nothing messed up. Or stick to recommended settings.

Your setup is fine, just just keep searching for help.

Well, if your running 1333mhz DDR3 that can be contributing to some of performance loss. But not massive enough to cause what your seeing. Your cpu is just fine, I would say start fresh with windows (format and re-install) and install latest drivers. If that does not help then we can rule out software/windows/driver issues.

Side note though What powersupply are you using? also what are your cpu/gpu and motherboard temps while playing say BF1? If all that checks out fine only thing I can think of is its a hardware issue with motherboard (being lower end) or defective gpu.

@X_CAPCOM_X:I don't get it though? This guy is using the same card as mine with 4790k cpu but getting 20+ fps above my figures using the same preset on sweetfx? Doesn't make any sense? how can the difference be just 1 or 2 fps?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vilDsj3G04

@iandizion713: Drivers are up to date and also some people are using the same card as mine and getting higher fps too as you can see in that video

@fatguyslim: Your issues are probably on the software end just as @iandizion713 and @04dcarrahersuggested. I said faster RAM may contribute 1 or 2 fps, but now that I think about it again, you should be running your RAM at least 1600 Mhz or maybe even higher. You may get a huge jump just by doing that.

@fatguyslim: If you were playing at 1440p your results would make sense. If that were the case, Battlefield 4 is the only game that seems to be a little low. You have something going on and I hope you get it figured out!

@fatguyslim: You should call Nvidia and talk with tech. Theyll be able to help you out some. I always call the companies i buy from and they usually are very helpful.

But yeah, seems like you have something going on. Im just nothing tech savvy enough to help much since everything seems fine to me.

Yeah that's true CPU would get a bigger boost. It would be closer to 10 I think.

I mostly referred to the Ram clock speed influence in my post. It would be more like 3-6 fps considering his build as is.

Beyond what's been recommended, double-check your processes to ensure your resources aren't being eaten up by other programs.

@fatguyslim:

Look at these benchmarks with a wide range of cpus with a GTX 1080. Like I said you really should do a fresh start with windows upgrading one version to the next can lead into problems. What kind of temps are you seeing while playing games? If your cpu is below 65C and gpu is below 85C you ok. Like I said if a fresh start with windows 10 ( no upgrade from 7) then its a hardware issue....

Run a 3DMark benchmark if possible and post your scores. Do you have any software like Afterburner or PrecisionX? Sometimes the drivers may have a glitch that causes your clocks to drop.

That's weird. I've got a worse processor (i5), worse RAM (12GB), worse graphics card (GTX1070) and I've no problem with any game maxed out so far, including Battlefield 1. I haven't looked what FPS I get, but it's smooth so I don't care. Are you sure worse rigs than yours get better FPS? You sure they just haven't tweaked their graphics settings to suit their hardware?

According to your specs, you shouldn't need to upgrade anything for a while. Sounds like an awesome PC.

I get that kind of BF1 performance with a 780 ti on max. Something funny going on. Everything looks good on paper. Check task manager. Turning off and on again. Driver updates, fresh install. Not too familiar with the other games.

One question... you didn't touch the resolution scaling in BF1 did you? It should be at 42% if you want it to use the native resolution. Which makes no sense, I know. If you set it to 100% you are rendering the game in 4k.(!) 42% is apparently 1080p. It essentially functions as a very effective form of AA but it's the most demanding setting there is. Basically you never want to touch it unless you qualify as a crazy person.

I get similar performance with a worse cpu and gpu ( can't remember exactly what one, it's non k entry level i5 )

16gb ram and a gtx 970.

Had my 970 since 2014 now, still not seeing a reason to upgrade for 1080p gaming.

I've had a few discussions with cows on system wars who are convinced I'd need to upgrade a few more times this generation to keep up with console optimisation

Lol

@fatguyslim: gpu test seems ok for base clock, cpu bit low but not drastically, have you run Firestrike? Have you checked the cpu/gpu usage during games, if your gpu is under 95% it's being underutilized when running uncapped fps. It could be cpu throttling due heat or simply the ram is holding you back(this might not be an issue in some games and more evident in others)

10 to 20 FPS from what CPU exactly? I'd be surprised if he'd get that much from the best CPU available right now in a CPU demanding game.

Right so here is something even more hilarious and embarrassing really. The mother board I have is actually ASUS Z97-P and the Ram I have is Corsair Vengance 2 x 8GB DDR3 2133Mhz. I ordered this a year ago when I was looking to upgrade I originally purchased H81M-Plus but was contacted by the ebay seller saying there is a offer on z97-p and i7 4790 combo for extra 50 quid so I got that along with that RAM. But the messed up thing is when I followed the instructions in this video to look up my ram speed it showed 1333 Mhz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt_NI7W3ZN4

I am so confused and I am sorry for confusing you all too. So my rig is actually much better than I expected yet the fps is low as f***.

Perhaps, it's something with the UEFI/BIOS or Windows services/startup.

Update your bios silly. Your older motherboard doesn't how to take full advantage of a modern gpu like GTX1080.

I had the same problem - Gtx 1080 underperforming even with all driver up to date. Updating bios solved the problem.

Depends of your definition of "much". 1080 is around 15% faster. To me that's honestly a lot but to some people that doesn't justify the price difference.
