I'm thinking 1080/60fps at this time because 4K tech is still very new. Also, it would make a significant difference in gameplay, whereas resolution is more about making things look pretty. What about you, SW? Which one do you choose if you had to?

4K/60 when possible, but I'm playing FH3 on the PC right now at 4K/30 maxed out and it looks and feels great
1080p/60fps.
B/c my HDTV that I play PC games on can only do up to 1080p.
If I was on one of the new TV's in the house....maybe.....MAYBE....4k @ 30fps....but I doubt it.
Answering your question, depends entirely on the game.
Frame rate affects gameplay. Resolution affects graphics.
Gameplay>Graphics
Higher frame rate every single time unless you're playing interactive movies like Until Dawn or Telltale games.
1080p 60fps 4k isn't as wide spread as it should be yet and by the time it is people going be talking about 8k and 10k
4K(Native)/60 .
As much as I'm excited for Scorpio I really want 4K/60. I just feel that after awhile the novelty of a 4K picture will soon wear off and then we'll be "stuck" with the same ole 30fps..... That's not moving forward IMO.
If we're gonna do 4K native we need to aim high with 60FPS coupled with it and do it right. But at the same time 1080 upscaled to me is a waste and we're not fully taking advantage of the 4K sets out there.
Kinda torn because I have a feeling 4K native/60 titles will be scarce.... At least in the beginning.

Agreed.
Funny how upscaling is cool now, huh?
every TV is 60 Hertz every monitor is 60 hertz
playing in 30 FPS doesn't make any sense the TV IS BUILT for 60 ITS BUILT FOR 60 anything less is not for the TV its fore some crap
Digital Foundry warned me about these "consoles" there taking the fight back for gamers.
I actually was watching this video gaming awards the people on stage were like oh 60 fps is too gamey its too comical why is the tv 60 hertz and why is games built for 60 hertz if its gamey what the hell are those people talking about that word doesn't exist.
look it up the word GAMEY doesn't exist it was made by sony and microsoft to support there 30 FPS console THEY MADE IT UP THEY MADE UP THE WORD GO TALK TO THEM!
If your Input device supports 60 FPS and your playing at 30 fps your hardware is awful not the monitor not the screen YOUR Hardware is awful thats whats going on your not taking advantage of the things you bought. These people are outa control they don't know whats going on.

You post some of the dumbest shit I have ever read.
Answering your question, depends entirely on the game.
I agree. Some games are just fine at 30fps, and in those cases the 4K 30 might be more appealing. I'd say in general I'd go for the 1080p 60 answer, but it's just not always necessary

It's all a big conspiracy!
I don't like to feel constricted to one option. I think I'll have the choice to switch between either whenever I want.
That's the beauty of PC gaming.
I'd go for 1080p/60fps but I'd settle for 4K/30fps.
That's assuming the game actually locks to 30 fps, not dips constantly into the 20's. That's another matter entirely.

what ?
Depends on the type of game... but generally I'd probably prefer the higher res. A smooth 30fps is fine to me.
Again I don't want crappy 30fps if we are moving into the 4K world; but I also feel that 1080 upscaled is just a waste if you have a 4K set.... it's just not being utilized fully.
I say again give me 4Knative/60fps. But because I think we won't hit this at the beginning I'm willing to compromise and deal with something such as a dynamic res solution where the game scales back accordingly to maintain 60fps..... but not scaling back lower than say 1900p.
.....again if we're going to be investing in 4K sets we want to be able to get the most out of our gaming experiences both visually and performance-wise.....anything less than the proposed solution I just mentioned would be a waste and then you'd have to ask why are we even making the jump to 4K if we're not gonna do it right..... which is why the ps faux pro is an automatic waste of time and will likely not hit my desired targets I just mentioned and that is why I'm highly excited for Xbox Scorpio.
1080p at 60 fps
I really think that most genres should strive for that goal.
For games where input sensitivity is less required, puzzle games, slower paced games, they could go for the 4K/30.
If you don't have the hardware, don't go for higher res at unplayable framerates please !
If i had to play a competitive game , 1080p/60fps all day long ( though im fan of 144fps for thaT )
If i had to play an epicly looking game with advanced graphics and more story/cinematic appeal than usual i would be more than fine with 4K/30fps.
Definitly though , in most cases , i prefer 60 fps over resolution.
Problem is that true 4k at 30fps takes more power than 1080p at 60 fps... So at 4k there will be more compromises made than at 1080p at 60 fps.
I'll take 60FPS over 30 any day. Doesn't matter what resolution. If the game can't run at a steady 30 FPS.... then there's something seriously wrong with the optimization (Or lack thereof).
Are consoles still running with that 30FPS or below hindrance? Ok, I can tolerate that. But don't use shit amounts of motion-blur to compensate for the choppiness. It'll just make it look even worse (I'm looking at you Uncharted)!

I get a headache if the fps drops below 30 fsp..
1080p/60fps
even if I had a 4k tv (which I dont and wont for a lot time). I just dont see the thrill of 4k, seems pretty unnecessary, especially for gaming)
I'm thinking 1080/60fps at this time because 4K tech is still very new. Also, it would make a significant difference in gameplay, whereas resolution is more about making things look pretty. What about you, SW? Which one do you choose if you had to?
The question is ridiculous because 1080p renders roughly 2 million pixels and 4K renders roughly 8 million pixels. 2 million pixels X 60 frames = 120 million pixels rendered every second. 8 million pixels X 30 frames = 240 million pixels rendered every second.
What this translates into is either you have to run 1080p games at 120fps to render the same amount of pixels or you have to increase detail/effects at 60fps.
The real question is what is better 1440p @60fps or 4K at 30fps. 1440p is 2550 X 1440 = 3,672,000 pixels per frame. Rounded to 4 million X 60 frames = 240 million pixels rendered every second.
1440p upscaled to 4K looks pretty darn good. My opinion is that it depends on the game. Some games may benefit more from 4K 30fps and some may benefit more from the higher fps and 1440p.
All of this matters only if you own a 4K television.
4K(Native)/60 .
As much as I'm excited for Scorpio I really want 4K/60. I just feel that after awhile the novelty of a 4K picture will soon wear off and then we'll be "stuck" with the same ole 30fps..... That's not moving forward IMO.

I don't think you understand how this works. 4K renders a 3840 X 2160 resolutions that equals 8,294,400 pixels per frame. Rendering that at 60 fps native requires processing 8,294,400 X 60 = 497,664,000 pixels every second! That's almost 500 million pixels a second.
1080p resolution is 1920 X 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels per frame. 2,073,600 X 60 = 124,416,000 pixels rendered every second.
Do you see that it takes 4X the power to run games at 4K than it does at 1080p?
What this translates into is either you have a MONSTER of a console in power and I mean a true HIGH POWERED MACHINE or there will be many compromises. The PS4 pro is nowhere near this sort of monster. The Scorpio is more powerful but nowhere near what would be required.
The compromise may be a game that runs at 1080p 60 in Ultra quality or a game that runs at 4K 60 in low with some parts gimped to make it run at that high a res and fps.
The idea that the PS4 pro or the Scorpio even is going to run games at Ultra or high at 60fps 4K native is just ignorance.
There is a reason why not even the GeFore 1080 can run the most demanding games at 4K 60fps in Ultra. And that GPU is a lot more powerful than what scorpio will be and blows away the PS4 pro.
