160G dam. If ur thinking of buying a ps3 i recommend to wait a little bit longer.

"This morning Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe announced the new 160GB Playstation 3 for Europe. The Playstation Blog just confirmed that the system will also be coming to the states in November as part of a new limited-edition bundle that will include the console and a copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for $500.

The bundle will also include a voucher for PAIN and a Dualshock 3 wireless controller. While I appreciate the increased harddrive size, I don't see it as big a deal with the PS3 since swapping out the drive yourself is so simple."

Maybe it's just me, but switching the hard drive was a real pain! One of the screws in that tray was so tight and I ended up breaking part of the metal tray, but the hard drive is working fine, thank god.

You don't really have to wait for it , you can just get the 80 gig + Uncharted + Pain (or a different downloadable) and upgrade yor hardrive when (if)you run out of space. Plus the MGS4 bundle is out there ...... better game + b/c.

Yeah, I don't really even see the need for the 160gig in the PS3 just yet myself. They don't have the download service of XBLM with all the TV shows that stay on your HDD. It seems to me Sony just wanted to say "Pfft? 120gig? I can add more then that! Try 160gig MS!" Next year we will see MS launch a new line with 200gig HDD and thus the struggle for largest HDD will continue.

this kind of stuff really pisses me off. so the early adopters that waited in line and overpaid for the ps3 dont get anything from Sony, but the people that wait get all the great deals....

this is true for most other companies as well...

Dear Sony,

Thanks for the 160 Gb harddrive. Too bad I have nothing to fill it up with, and neither does your average Joe. Clearly, you still haven't figured out why people are bying more Wiis than PS3s.

What I really want is a PS3 for $300 or less. Heck, remove the wireless (put in wired ethernet since it tends to be cheaper), and put in only a 20-40Gb harddrive to save cost. Keep the BluRay though, which is the most compelling feature at this point.

Regards,

-The rest of the world who give this news a big "meh" after seeing the price.

160 GB isn't overkill if a lot of games have 5+GB mandatory installs.

And if you have a lot of music, DLC and videos.

Not to mention that the PS3 has games on PSN much bigger then the standard Xbox Live Arcade stuff. Games like Warhawk, Siren, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Gran Turismo: Prologue, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and SOCOM: Confrontation, Burnout Paradise, and Wipeout HD are all coming soon.Hell, I'm installing a 320GB hard-drive on my PS3.

This is why the 160GB is needed

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/688422/PS3_Gets_Music_Video_Service.html?utm_source=g4tv&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=TheFeed

Do you want to watch more music videos, but can't find any to view? We've got just the things for you: VidZone, a new service coming soon to your PlayStation 3. Vidzone launches in early 2009 in European territories, and will allow you to choose from over 10,000 songs to listen to on-demand. You can make playlists too, and songs will be accessible via remote play on the PSP and will be purchasable as ringtones.

Also coming soon, on the PS3 tuneage front: A full music download service that will arrive for the PlayStation 3 and PSP later in 2009. Sadly, we don't know when/if Vidzone will show up in a America, but we'd put money on it happening before too long. You can't keep something as good as that bottled up in Europe forever!

Following on the recent European PS3 bundle announcement, Sony confirmed through their Playstation.Blog that the latest 160gb bundle will be arriving in North American shores this November, packed with a copy of the adventure hit, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

The new bundle will be available for $499.99. Sony mentioned that the bigger HD space will help you "build levels to your heart's content in LittleBigPlanet". Could this be Sony's first step in introducing Sackboy as the system's new lead? Stay tuned for more Leipzig updates.

The price difference between a 20GB hard-drive and 120GB hard-drive is probably like 5 dollars. This model is simply a profit model. Similar to the way Car Companies do things. A fully loaded Mercedes C-class only cost like 3,000 or so more to manufacture then a bare-bones entry level Mercedes and yet they charge like 15,000 more for the fully loaded model. Why? Because there are people out there who are going to buy the best even if the price difference is substantial.

What's the difference between that and the way it is now? Every PS3 has a selectable hard-drive. Anyone can buy any PS3 model and install a standard 320GB laptop Hard-drive.

Not when previous SKU's go out of production. What if someone only wants a 20GB HDD for their PS3, why should they have to buy an 80GB one? Why can they just not be given the choice from the beginning?

laptop hdd capacity has increased since 2006, i doubt there are many that even manufacture 20gb hdd anymore.

They should have a multimedia console pack.

It would have the 160GB hard drive, usic vouchers and movie vouchers for their online service and it should also come with play TV. It would be cool if they made it part of the ps3. They should put it where the SD card slots go since they got rid of them for the 40gig anyway and I never use them personally as suing a USB flash stick is much easier.

I'm so torn on this. Part of me says "awesome" and another part of me says "what are they thinking?"

A year old game...
No backwards compatibility...
Back to $500 bucks...
Your main competitor is dropping a $199 SKU...

I'm sure it'll be a good bundle, but geesh they need to concentrate on getting that price down. Not to mention seems like it would have made much more since to package a new game in with the SKU like LitteBigPlanet, Resistance 2 or SOCOM or something.

Oh well, we'll see how it goes.

Yeah, pretty much. Heck, besides the 20 GB to 60 GB Xbox transition, dont forget they added HDMI too.

It just hit me this costs as much as the MGS4 bundle, which has BC and a much better game. You can rent uncharted for about 7$ and you can easily beat it in a week. Sadly, the average consumer is going to think "Wow! 80 more GB of space." Very disappointing.

But basically the only changed they've made to the SKUS is a bigger HDD... which you can buy seperate for fairly cheap as well. Other than that, the PS3 has been stripped of BC and multimedia card slots.

How can you regret them making a new SKU when basically all they are doing is making the HDD bigger (which you can upgrade) and stripping away features like BC.

Hell no. First you have games with downloadable installs that are several GB's each. Then you have huge downloadable PSN games like Warhawk, Siren, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, SOCOM: Confrontation, Wipeout HD, and Burnout Paradise. Then consider the fact that you can buy or rent full length SD and HD movies on PSN. Then, how about Demo's they're usually around 1 GB each? Finally, what if you want to store music or movies on your PS3? I have a 40 GB and I feel really restricted, Those extra 20 GB's would be nowhere near enough for me to not to feel constricted. I think 160GB is probably enough for me, but since I'm upgrading I'm getting myself a 320 GB and that way I really don't have to worry about space at all.

I think the elite was a huge rip off too. The difference here is that Microsoft didn't release a worse bundle than before for the same price as an older and better bundle. Who really needs that extra 80 GB? Not many people. They are just playing the number game with consumers.
